No, it really isn't safer.  There are so many factors to take into consideration when you're throwing something off a cliff it makes hitting a jump look like a total joke.  With a jump you have a packed takeoff, you can see about where the landing will be, and all you have to do is carry enough speed into it.  If you're hitting a cliff you have to hope that the takeoff doesn't have anything that will catch on it, the snow isn't grabby, there aren't any rocks in the landing, and I could go on for quite a bit longer about it.  And don't make generalizations about where I've gotten hurt before if you have no clue.  I have never gotten hurt skiing park, but I've been down in the sled from hitting cliffs before.  But I guess I'll have to state once again that if you want to try that switch cork 5 off a cliff the first  time because it's so much safer and easier, be my guest.  I'll be learning all my tricks off the perfectly predictable jumps in the terrain park.
