The pictures were merely posted to grab attention to an issue that otherwise would not have been discussed. It didn’t even work the first time (which did surprise me). Over the top? Maybe. I don’t think I’ve exaggerated the truth concerning the Pope’s (Vatican’s) role in the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Africa however. His sphere of influence extends past Catholics in Africa. This becomes especially dangerous to Africans when he preaches lies. Latex condoms have been proven to be 90% effective in containing the HIV virus. The 10% ineffectiveness can be blamed on misuse. Abstinence is 100% effective, no doubt about that (again not an issue I care to argue about). In 1995, 70% of sexually active Catholics used contraceptives. This % doesn’t translate in Africa however, where Catholics are less likely to use contraceptives, and are more likely to have HIV/AIDS. In my opinion it seems that Catholics outside of Africa are able to make a well-rounded, informed decision on their use of contraceptives. Catholics living in my city are educated enough to know that what the Vatican says about condoms is completely false. If an African hears from a missionary that condoms do not protect one from STDs (Not only that but the Vatican has spread rumours that say condoms are ‘laced’ with HIV), this information is bound to spread throughout their village as ‘fact’ (not because he’s a religious ambassador, but because they expect him to know more about condoms than they do). A sexually active African isn’t going to stop having sex because his neighbour tells him that someone said having sex before marriage is a sin (what’s a sin anyways). One’s a ‘factual’ issue; the other’s a moral issue, I don’t believe they have any relation at all.
People are going to have sex. You can teach abstinence all you want; I have no problems with that. But they’re going to have sex. In order to promote abstinence to the people of Africa, the Vatican has bombarded these people with lies; and that’s what I have a problem with.

Unfortunately the mainstream media is just about as one-sided as Micheal Moore is anymore. With the exception of Fox News, they're a little better.
