Carrying a Knife (Pros/Cons)

I'm thinking of going to my local sporting goods store and purchasing a small handheld folding knife. I think it will be good for protection and will come handy for outdoorsy stuff and possible emergencies. Legally, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to have it on school grounds (I won't be dumb and accidently bring it to school) but otherwise I'm pretty sure its legal to carry around a simple folding knife in my pocket. I'm also 18 and I'm sure the store will be able to tell me what laws there are, if any. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with carrying a knife around or any suggestions, advice?

con - u can get stabbed with your own knife. and BTW are you havin troubles withsome for u to want to carry a knife. Or is it just in case?

i carry a folder, great for opening boxes at work

and also comes in handy for a bunch of random stuff while hinting, fishing or camping

I have carried a knife on me just about every day since I was 16 and I am almost 21 now. I even carried it it school. Never had a problem, granted I use it as a utility tool, not something to cause harm to a person.

about 50% of the guys i know carry knifes. it's not even a big deal and as far as i'm concerned there are no laws. would people follow them anyway?

I live in an extremely safe town and I have never been bullied, attacked, assaulted, etc. or even come close to any of these. I am not afraid of anything happening.

But at the same time, you can never be too safe. And you never know when something bad can happen. Hopefully I would never have to use my knife, but now that I'm older I feel the need to protect my self and the people around me (eventually my wife and children). I think now is the time that I should get used to carrying a weapon around. Who knows where I will live in the future and what situations I will come across.

And if its me or a loved one dying versus having to use my knife, I would choose using the knife.

A big question I have is what are the possibilities of accidentally getting stabbed with my own knife? Is there a way it can open up in my pocket and I can get stabbed?

And this is a serious thread so take your jokes elsewhere.

Don't do it. I went to the bars with some friends last summer and one of my friends got in a scuffle and got stabbed. Fucked his life up for a while.

dude, it takes some balls to stab someone, and it REALLY hurts to get stabbed. I wouldn't want to inflict that kind of pain on anyone, and there are numerous ways to incapacitate someone without a weapon. I would honestly recommend learning how to use your fists and legs to fight rather than using any weapon, especially if you live in such a safe community. Having a knife on you only escalates the danger of a situation...doesn't really scare anyone who's really trying to do some hard.

I have taken self defense classes in school, plus I'm not a huge guy, and if its like 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 or you have to protect someone else, self-defense is only going to go so far.

you can cut open any damn box you find!

i carried a knife around. a knife supposedly legal in 50 states even. a ken onion chive 1600 knife to be exact.

This bad boy despite being not a switch blade, but kind of a switch blade...

Heres the fucked up thing, so this switch-assist technology is legal supposedly.

After a night out drinking we get stopped, yada yada, cop pats us all down. I end up getting the knife taken from me, and it was confiscated as a switchblade knife.

Meanwhile you can buy this knife at dozens of local stores.

So I do what any dumbass would do....

I call the DEA, ATF, state police, and local police to try and get them to arrest and or fine the shops selling them.

Since I am a jackass I called them told them really vague tips like yeah i know these spots selling illegal weapons, and I think you need to look at this.

Needless to say plain clothed police officers were at the door in no time......and they promptly didn't give a shit.

I guess I kind of understand how a knife could be more of a problem than an asset in a fight. Like lets say two guys try to mug you and you pull out your knife. This could make them feel threatened and decide to pull out a knife or a gun on you.

But I still think I might get one for hiking, fishing, camping etc.

Doesn't matter if you're big or small, you're going to have issues with more than one person against you. That's when martial arts practice or basic street smarts come in. If you have a knife you're pretty much taking a huge risk in that you could just provoke your attackers. If the attacker has a knife then you're fucked because chances are he's used it before.

you've OBVIOUSLY never seen the outsiders.

Just don't be an idiot and foget to take it out of your pocket when you go to concerts, they will take it and you won't get it back.

I carry a Knife almost everyday. But I carry it as a TOOL and not as a WEAPON. If Im in a fight, Im going to fight fair, w/o a weapon. Even if Im outnumbered. However, if a Knife is pulled on me, I may reconsider. Real men don't need knives to beat in someone elses' face.

One more note, don't bring a knife to a gun fight

What about this?

I just like knives. I buy them just to have them realistically. And it does make me feel slightly better when im walking home from work through the rough part of town at night that i have a weapon. Like I would rather be the dude with a knife than the dude without of if someone did try to attack me or w.e. I don't think i would stab the person, but if I pulled a knife and yelled "fuck off" I'm sure that would be enough to prevent most attacks/robbings.

true i used to carry a knife everyday, I work at a box factory. Now that I don't have one I feel naked and useless. Real men don't jump somebody 5 on 1 either, but if I'm getting stomped on the ground I'm gonna pull that knife. I've never stabbed anyone to date though.

another white kid carrying a knife they are not gonna use in a confrontation.\

for one learn how to fight.

for two if you are really that scared for your safety get a handgun.

a knife really is pointless to carry unless you are 100% gonna stab someone and i almost guarantee you wont.

I started carrying this after I graduated. It comes in handy for alot of things. The only way I would use it on a person is if there were multiple people attacking me, and then i would go for the throat.

you are never going to have to use a knife in a fight. people really aren't that dumb nowadays.

also, if a cop asks you why you are carrying a knife, never say self-defense. they will confiscate it as a weapon since your obvious intention is to use it for harm.

I have a Buck 110, and i love it to death. It looks good and probably some of the highest quality you will come across.

Also, its kind of hard to stab yourself with a pocket knife as long as you have some sort of common sense. A sheath knife (non-folding) is probably illegal in public and much easier to stab yourself with.

my grandfather gave me a pocket knife when i was 12. i bought a folding clasp blade when i was 15. brought both with me to college.

they're not for self defense. no utility knife is going to be designed to kill; that's when you get into the S&W tactical knives. i mean i probably could inflict a lot of damage with either of mine, but i use them on a daily basis for more mundane things, like opening letters, cutting cigars, whittlin'...

Why ya gotta bring race into this yo???????

Knives are not pointless to carry around. They come in handy in a plethora of situations. Especially for some jobs, or if you're going camping.

some smoke tried to jack my friend (more like an acquaintance) for his ipod on the subway about 5 years ago. My friend had a knife in his hand hidden in his pocket. They were talking shit and the jiggaboo hit him over the head with a bottle, then my friend stabbed him in the gut once and backed away. The mouli lived but now has to shit into a bag for the rest of his life. lol?

the only reason race was brought in is because who is 98% of this site?

i know that a knife is a good tool to carry. but from the vibe i got from the OP it sounded like this was more of a self defense knife which is a no no.

ive learned from experience and like ill say a million times do not carry a knife/weapon unless you are 100% willing to use it and use it properly.

Then you were being redundant.

You're right about the using a knife as self defense though. I was giving good reasons to get a knife. Fuck, we're not really disagreeing about anything so I'll stop typing.

If you don't know how to use said knife then it is useless to carry

around. It's like having a car and not knowing how to drive. On top of that if you're not in a neighborhood where people get jumped pretty consistently, then what are you protecting yourself from? I carried a knife all last summer 'cause I was slangin' caps and people were getting jumped all the time in my neighborhood. Now that is a reason for needing extra protection.

Just to make sure I get my point across. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF WITH A KNIFE, THEN HAVING ONE IS COMPLETELY USELESS.

just fucking carry one, god some of you kids are pussies. its not going to do any harm to have one for any reason, its not like having a knife on you means you need to pull it everytime you get in a confrontation. and if a couple of faggots try to rape your girlfriend or some shit then good on you for stabbing the fuckers, obviously you should be able to get a feel from the perps if they will pussy out if you pull it...just dont pull it if you think its a bad idea.
and lol at the kid saying smoke and mouli so casually...nice dude.

wife and children? your 18 lets not get carried away. the problem with carrying a knife is that your attacker (if you ever get "attacked") could take your knife and stab you, your wife, and your children, when in the case you didnt have a knife you may have ended up just getting robed or been punched in the face. also if you ever get pulled over with a knife in your pocket youll be questioned about it and since your 18 they will probably think the worst (true story)

This girl at my work (ski instructing) brought a knife to session one day(we ski to improve teaching techniques etc.) and it ended up being a park session, well at the top of one run she had a butter knife hanging out of her pocket while she was skiing....

i know cool story

The way i see it a situation where you need a knife and don't have it will most likely end a lot worse than a situation where you have a knife and don't need it.

I carry a knife sometimes and I live in a safe city with minimal bad shit. It can come in handy for many things all the time. I use it daily. BUT if you ever end up in a fight or are threatened by someone with a knife chances are they would be just as scared to stab someone as you. Not only that but say Im carrying a small knife and a big knife to fuck with ppl on the street. I come across you with and whip out my small knife threating you or a gf or something, then you whip out your small knife. Think ill leave you be? no I would either attack you with my small one hoping you pussy out and run or i get the better of you OR i pull out my large knife or gun (but i live in canada so no guns here) and proceed to fuck you up after feeling a little threatened because you have a knife too and most ppl dont fuck with me. I say go for it but be very careful who you tell you have one and when you choose to use it.

Interesting fact, within 20 feet a knife is more deadly than a gun.
I carry one most of the time when I go out, but I've spent 5 years learning a martial art and earned a second degree black belt so I know how to use it (and how to defend from it if it is taken from me), although I still don't plan on it unless I absolutely need to. I suggest getting one because it is useful for things, but at the same time you should still take some real self defense classes, not just the stuff from your school since in my experience the people they get to teach at schools really don't teach anything effective. Look for a good traditional martial arts school with a master who likes to teach, possibly a Judo school since you said you're a bit smaller and Judo was actually designed for shorter/smaller people, or Krav Maga just because it works incredibly well. PM me if you've got any questions about getting one since the laws vary on size between the states, and some are just plain impractical.
Also, to the person who posted the pic of themselves and their knife...great knife, I've got the same one and it makes a nice boot knife.

dont kid urself you live in a small little town and have never goten in a real fight i bet. no fucking way ur stabing someone. a gun all you have to do is pull the trigger a knife you thrust into someones flesh it take mighty big gahonas

Dude... if you bring a knife and someone starts a fight with you and you show it even by accident his boys might make the decision to not let the fight happen and just kick the shit out of you. Just leave it at home unless you plan on using it and dipping (if your a crazy motherfucker). You also don't know what other people holdin'. I know what you mean though having a knife is a feeling of security but its sketch having it in ur pocket.

I carry one around and they are really handy when you need to cut something open or get something out of a package. They tend to come in handy alot. If your 18 there will not be any problems buying one, just dont take it to school grounds.
