Graduating from CU in May, took a job in Philly and looking for a car. Was thinking about an e90 m3 (id have to finance a ton of that) or a mk7 gti or an e55 Amg which I could pay for in full. Any other suggestions for fun cars or should i just buy a gti

What field are you working in?

I wouldn't take on a big loan fresh out of school.

GTIs are cool. What are you looking for in a car besides performance and Europeaness?

Going into reinsurance broking, looking for a car that’s mostly fun (Manual or fast as fuck), decent to drive on long trips, and respectable enough to drive a client around in.

Maybe don't get a new car? What's your budget

I got super lucky and broncos tripled in value 2 years after I got mine so I have like 17k ish to spend. And yeah I know buying a car isn’t a great idea but I love cars almost as much as I love skiing and since I’m moving to a place with shitty skiing might as well get something fun.

WRX? Interior not nice enough? Do you vape?

I haven't kept up too closely on all the options out there right now, I mostly just research kid+dog friendly and manual transmission vehicles...I have a Taco and an AllTrack.

Lexus IS, Infiniti maybe?

I’ve seen too many wrxs abused to ever be comfortable buying a used one. The g37 is pretty cool, might check one of those out.

I personally would get the GTI because that most likely is gonna last the longest, M3s are really cool and would be a great buy if you had the time and money to maintain it. The GTI is a good tuning platform and is really customizable. If you get the GTI, get rid of the engine sounds speaker though. The GTI is probably gonna be the best daily driver. I would also check out the ford focus ST and the fiesta ST

I was thinking new on the wrx.

CPO ATS V or CTS V? Pretty fast but very GM-ish.

I’m buying used most likely, not a fan of the gen 1 V and the gen 2s are still a bit out of my price range. My dad has a gen 2 wagon actually, it’s a nasty car and has surprisingly high quality interior.

I've got an Mk7 Golf R and would highly recommend it.. if your looking for something in between an AMG and a GTI the R is a perfect fit.. 310whp and awd + it flys under the radar unlike a Mercedes which is just asking for attention from people and the cops. The interior is so nice and I've drove to the ski hill the worst conditions possible without a problem. Also raced a few AMG's at red lights and have yet too lose thanks to the trusty built in launch control and overall weight of the car. No break boosting or having to do it manually like in the Mercedes. The 2018 got a face lift and upgraded electronic gauge cluster which is pretty cool.. they also come with a Fender audio/speaker system which is literally the best.. anyway done ranting awesome car get the Golf R

For the price of a used R I could get an e90 m3 which I would definitely prefer. The Rs are badass little rides, the apr ones are nasty. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about these mk7 gtis and Rs and the GTI is super affordable used.

Right you could get an m3 for that price but it would be much older and have zero warranty... I’d still smoke one off the line but lose in the top end or high speed rolls. Yea hope you find something that suites ur needs and price range.. I wouldn’t buy anything with high hp that’s performance oriented without full factory warranty but that’s just me :$

I just love that s65 v8, 414hp and 8200rpms would just be too fun. I’m an M guy at heart because they are so fantastic to drive in the curves. I can do a lot of my own work but I don’t think I could keep up with the costs of the m3.

Do you have the DSG or the 6 speed in your R?

I use to have a manual Subaru STI & once I got my Golf R I opted out of the manual life and got the DSG because they are significantly faster and my hip and knee would hurt after long drives and shifting in traffic. I do miss banging gears but overall I’m glad I made the switch. Yea the sound of a V8 is awesome, I hate when people cheap out and strait pipe them tho.. most legit sounding exhausts cost a couple thousand minimum. Same with my Golf, like an IPE exhaust will run you like 4 grand but it fully unleashes the sound.

Do you drive your car in the winter or plan on taking it to the ski hill? Cause if so the M3 is rwd prob won’t have any problems but just something to consider if it’s worth it as a daily. Also don’t forget how much snow tires cost on 19/20” staggered wheels lol..

Honestly not sure how much skiing I’ll be doing locally since the Pocono’s kinda suck. I probably am not gonna get an m3 at this point because of cost. The gti just makes so much sense

Don't finance shit, you mongoloid. Pay cash for cars, clients don't give a shit about what you ride if you can get the job done. They will respect you more if you have a nice suit and a cheap car because they know you aren't a fucktard with money.

It all comes down to the rate at which you're financing. Rates are going up but if you're getting 1.9% financing for 48 or 60 months it doesn't make financial sense not to, especially considering you can use the financing as a bargaining chip in your negotiation.

So you bargain a car down by a few thousand and then have to pay double than back along with the car depreciating. No wonder so many people are broke as fuck.

Are you familiar with the concept of opportunity cost? If the returns on the money exceed the loan rate then you make money by having the loan by putting the money to work elsewhere. Do you have 30K shoved under your mattress?

Yeah I’m not looking at m3s anymore, i can get a decently low mileage gti with cash so that’s most likely the way I’m gonna go.

Lmao, that is a fallacy because of how cars depreciate. You'll never get the returns on an investment that you'll lose by financing an expensive ass automobile. Just find a cheap low mileage ride and pay cash, learn to maintain it yourself. Mark Zuckercuck drives a Honda Jazz for fucks sake lol. What do you need a BMW m5 for anyway?

If you're looking at cheap used cars of course pay cash. If you're looking new or CPO financing isn't automatically bad just because you pay interest. A lot of people fall into that mentality and it just doesn't add up when you do the math.

I've had beaters and new cars, hell I even have a car that's appreciating! I often can't find what I want on the used or CPO market anyway so I order things how I want them and wait.

Lol regardless of what car you drive its not free. You either make a low monthly payment on an open finance contract with low rates and pay it off waay faster than your intended too or you drive a shit box jazz and fix it every year. I think financing is the smartest option because my car will likely not depreciate in value that much because 1 not many were made and 2 its a desirable sports car that is well taken care of. So when I go to sell it I will most likely trade it in on a even nicer car and pay the exact same monthly payment I am making now and do the same thing again and again until I have enough coin to flat out buy a nice car in cash.. but even then that's stupid because you can just lease or finance it and never have to fork over 30-40k at once.. never know what's going to come up in life so I personally like having a car with full warranty thats new and will ultimately put a smile on my face everytime I drive it.. and who the fuck wouldn't want an M5? probably someone who looks up to mark zuck lmao

Mate I have a 2008 WRX STI that I paid cash for that is immaculate and fast as fuck lmao and any tuning I do myself because I'm not a chimp. But I didn't have to go into a shitty finance plan to pay for it or will I have to keep trading in cars and paying for the finance just to keep up with the jones's. I bet you aren't even old enough to afford shit.

Lol dude I already had an STI quit hating cause I’m just having a discussion. I had an 06 Hawkeye, that was protuned not that special.. I’m not in a shitty finance plan either & im probably older than you if not the same age so chill & im not sure what you mean about “having to keep trading in cars to keep up?”

No one needs an m5, but they’re awesome and I want one one day. I got maintenance in the bag, I did a few summers in shops and have been wrenching since I was a wee lad. Yeah having car payments would definitely suck.

If the Dems get their way all your gonna be able to drive is a nissan leaf my boi

IMO it’s hard to beat a mustang gt for preformance to price ratio. U can get a new gt for 35k or you can pick up a 2015 (same body style as the new ones) with 20-30k miles for $20k. Rwd + 435hp + manual is hard to beat. Also I think they look better than a gti, but that’s personal preference. It seems like u lean towards euro cars from all the options u listed tho.

My parents allowance came thru last week and i've been pulling up everywhere in that foreign

I would go with an ss 1le over the mustang, according to all the car mags and what I’ve seen on the track the Camaro completely outclasses the mustang. Both of those cars are rather impractical and ticket magnets but I’m sure they’re very fun.

Op congrats on graduating. Sucks that you're moving away from mountains. Anyway here's my advice (not that it matters). I drive a dad car.:

First off, never buy a new car. Also don't lease or you're a retard. The value basically cuts in half in a few years. Used is where you should go. Basically it's like buying a car that someone took very good care of and didn't drive much because it was previously leased. Look for those certified pre-owned cars that come with a full warranty and don't have a shit ton of mileage. Give the car a thorough inspection and at the very least the brakes and tires, cuz replacing those are expensive if you don't do it yourself. I was in a similar boat as you when graduating. I was all set to lease or buy a brand new Audi A6 l but smarter heads prevailed. Then I decided I was gonna buy a fully loaded Accord or Subaru Legacy; once again smarter heads prevailed because it's a waste of money. No one wants to pay $35k for a Subaru Lmao. I even considered a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo but I decided that was stupid. No matter how nice it looks, it will always be outdated in a year or two from current styles. The wow factor wears off pretty quick. I ended up buying a used 2013 Legacy 2.5i Ltd (all the features of the 3.6R but with better gas mileage and don't have to buy premium gas). Only 30K miles on it. Financed on a 4 year loan with the option to pay off early which I'm on track to do. I bought a Subaru because I wanted a car that will last for a while and that I can take almost anywhere and that had AWD for my travels to the mountains.

The lesson with this ^^^ is don't waste money on a car and buy something that fits your lifestyle and purposes for it. Luxury cars are cool and sports cars are fast but I can definitely without any regret say that I'll be extremely happy to not have any car loan payments in a year's time. I'm glad I didn't go overboard and get a new or expensive car. I enjoy my cargo space and wide visibility.

Know what you're buying. Look up the blue book value. How long has the car sat on the lot. Are the tires new or needing replaced soon? Did the previous owner follow all recommended service schedules (gimme the carfax)? Bargain with them to get the price down. Ask to talk to the dealer's manager cuz they may be able to offer you a better deal. Walk out on the dealer if you have to.

Does the car have any warranty recalls or lawsuits for defects? Do some googling. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way. My car was affected by an oil consumption epic failure by Subaru where it basically chugs oil and the light comes on early. Mine is after 2-3k miles. My car is just above the threshold where Subaru will fix it under the lawsuit terms. Synthetic oil changes are expensive. Still this hasn't made me regret my purchase as I just top it off and that lasts me until it's time to get changed.

Also consider insurance costs for the car you're looking at. These can vary widely.

Last thing. Don't get a BMW. Everyone on the road will think you're a dick. Seriously. Don't get a WRX unless you're planning on street racing Tokyo Drift style; women will think you're immature and if you get pulled over for speeding, well ur not getting a warning. Insurance is super high as well. There's no cargo space unless you ride short skis ?. Yeah yeah yeah NS vote me down but I 100% wholeheartedly think that if you drive a wrx you're stuck in a teenagers body. It is a fast little car so I'll give you that.

Also to whoever recommended a Ford focus. LOL ????????

In the end though, get what you want but if you stretch your budget, expect to make compromises elsewhere.

The new preformance pack level 2 on the mustangs brings it very close to the 1le, I do think the Camaro still wins on track but it’s by a very small margin. I don’t really do much track driving so that wasn’t a big factor for me. I think a lot of people think that the mustang/Camaro are “impractical” but I don’t see it. I can fold down the back seats and fit longer things like lumber or skis when I need to. It has 4 seats, ofc the back seats aren’t spacious but for 45 mins or an hour they are fine. I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had something that I couldn’t fit in my mustang but I could of fit in a 4 door sedan/ small hatchback. Obviously if you’re comparing a mustang to a pickup truck or large suv the mustang is impractical, but not compared to other smallish cars. I’ve never had a problem driving it in Ohio winters with winter tires and I even have a cheap friend who just throws sandbags in his trunk and stays on summer tires. Only things that would disqualify a mustang for me would be taking long road trips with more than one other person and for some reason it has to be your car that is used, if u have to carry some weird thing that fits in a small hatchback but not a regular trunk, or if u drive somewhere with really bad winters or in the mountains. Also when it comes to tickets not gonna lie I’ve gotten my fair share, but I’ve never gotten a ticket where I felt I was targeted for my car, in fact I’ve been let of doing 60 in a 35 and 87 in a 55 by cops who said they liked mustangs. I feel like the mustang is in the sweet spot of being fast and fun but not being expensive like a Porsche or a beemer. Cops see those cars and think “fucking rich douchebags”.

Aight so is there any reason I shouldn’t get a cpo mk7 gti reliability wise? I can find some with like 30k miles within my budget. I havent read about any major issues besides turbo shaft failures on the early build 2015s and a fuel pump issue that has a recall out. I test drove one today and it was super fun and snappy.

Get it. Do it! You know you want it!

Are they offering some 100K warranty with that CPO status? Is it optioned how you want it?

If your criterias are: fun, road trippable, and respectable, I'd say MK7 GTI. Not to mention it's cheaper and taking a fat loan after college sucks.

Especially if you'll be driving clients around. I work in a professional setting and nobody expects a fresh college grad to be driving German luxury. If you do drive a M or AMG, your clients and coworkers will assume you either financed out the ass, or parents paid for it.

GTI will get the respect from car guys as well as respect from non car guys who appreciate a quality, clean ride to lunch.
