Car got louder?

So i was driving my car up this big hill today and it all of a sudden got way louder and started vibrating a little bit, sounded kind of like the car was jumping to a lower gear to maintain speed. I'm assuming it's my exhaust maybe but I know nothing about cars. it was also coming from directly below me or maybe just behind me a little. any guesses on what it is and how much its going to cost and where to take it etc? thanks

This is why everyone should have a manual for their first car, its just your auto transmition shifting down gears. Since you are pressing on the petal, so the car knows that when you continue to gas but the car slows down that you need to shift gears to achieve your desired speed. The same thing happens when you're cruising on the freeway but wanna pass someone and you push the gas down and the car shifts so that you speed up.

sorry should have been more clear about that. It SOUNDED like it was dropping into a lower gear right when it happened but it didn't feel any different besides the added feel of a slight vibration to the car but it didn't drop down to a lower gear. and yes the car idles louder now as well as drives louder.

sorry for the dub post. besides the added slight vibration it doesn't seem to drive any different, just is louder, not sure if i was pushing the car too hard ripping the freeway uphill or what

Ah, sorry I assumed you were just an idiot ha.

Your muffler might be cracked, I had this happen to my first car and it definitely sounded louder, but not so loud that something seemed super wrong. I cracked mine driving on a dirt road back by a lake and camp ground, couple spots in the road had big rocks and shit, super sketch and i slammed my muffler on a rock and had the same experience as you. A shop could patch that up for you if it really bothers you.

This is what I was gonna say. My first car's exhaust broke completely off right under me, I think it just rusted out. Except mine was so loud it hurt my ears just idling. Probably something similar but not as severe

sick, ok that's what I was thinking but thought I'd ask for some second opinions. sounds mellow though, I'll have it checked out this week. thanks +K

Makes sense but they are so dreary, dull, boring, beige....

It's like sitting in a bucket of warm wallpaper paste.

Theyre very cheap cars, you can get a brand new one for like 9-10k and I know a guy that got one with like 60k miles for like $3k, pretty solid since they're cheap to fix due to so many cheap asian parts and they'll also last a shit ton of miles. If you only have $3k to spend and dont need 4wd, its not an awful choice.

Really? I see silver, black, white, and blue hyundais all the time. I honestly cant even recall seeing a beige colored one

hmm, i doubt the tranny personally, catalytic converter problems, ( rusted out possibly ) , oem exhaust maybe starting to go. prob nothing to serious but always worth the time , effort and money to get her checked out, especially since it seems like you do some highway driving etc. you dont want any bad problems coming up when you cruising 70-75 mph.....

I've been told I have a crack in my muffler. They aren't mechanics and based this conclusion on the sound change of my car when idling and driving.

If it is cracked how important is it that I get it fixed? And what are the consequences if I don't

well even if they are not " qualified " mechanics, if they know more about cars and vehicles then you id probly take their advice. ( where did you take it if you dont mind me asking, auto zone or something ?) anyways, like i said, a cracked or rusted or broken muffler is a pretty easy problem to diagnose, just by the idling and engine sounds as you stated. basically the importance of getting it fixed is just how long you want to deal with the problem, think about it, hear it etc. if its really bad and leaking fumes anywhere in your cabin i would get a new oem muffler . so basically the consequences are just how long you want to deal , hear, and drive with a cracked or rusted out muffler. remember, it will only get worse, rust, crack what ever. and of course the worst consequence is that you wait to long, think its all good and will be fine, then your muffler finally comes of driving 75 mph down the highway and becomes a deadly projectile that could seriously injure you , your passengers, and anyone else who may be driving behind you / on the highway in general. iv e seen a muffler fly off in a 45 mph zone a few years ago when i was following an older vehicle that was spurring exhaust fumes, and a busted off muffler can be a very dangerous thing , i was honestly scared when i saw that rusted piece of metal fly right over my driver side mirror. long story short, id just get it fixed, it will be worth the money in the end and the piece of mind that your muffler isn't going to fly off at some unexpected moment. just my 2 cents. good luck buddy. never underestimate the pros of keeping your car running properly, no matter how old, junky etc. cheers friends !

My entire muffler separated right behind the catalytic converter last summer on my subaru and the thing was like BRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP every where I went. Fortunately, its not that expensive to fix

I had this problem a couple months back. Turned out to be a small hole that had worn into the exhaust system. Luckily it was the original exhaust so I didn't have to pay shit, it was covered.

yup, something snapped/cracked/opened up near your muffler and now you car is not as "silenced." Happened to me right before christmas heading home from sunday river

I've had a cracked manifold on my TJ for about 30k miles. Doesn't seem to affect much, just the volume of my engine.

I would almost guarantee that it is a crack in your exhaust system. However, if the sound is coming from under the driver seat approximately, it's probably not your muffler, but rather a crack in the the pipe somewhere underneath the car. For reference, I had a crack in my exhaust line on my truck and it cost me $50 to have them weld up a new piece.

Consequences? Louder car and possibly fines if you live in an emissions state. Mechanical consequences - very very little to none other than sound.

didn't read responses. exhaust leak of your cat may have loosened up if its two pieces that connect from your cat to your muffler. maybe the whole things welded, could have snapped, is anything dragging ?

had a similar problem but wasn't so instant. Turned out my front exhaust pipe was messed up and was making my jetta sound like a mega riceburner.

this. I had the exhaust tube rust through and crack about 6in out from the engine and the car was so loud I couldn't drive it really.

The last time my car got louder I noticed that my faunt got smaller. Do you think those two events are related?

Did you experience any weird typing phenomenon?

I feel like I'm stuck in another e-situation where I'm not up with the times enough to know I'm missing something.
