I think they can be very useful for people with depression/PTSD/anxiety. They would make the most synical bastard see the beauty the world has to offer. I was watching a video recently, a woman with clinical depression taking ayahuasca for the first time. Long story short, he has a breakthrough moment where she sees spider on the ground and one of the people in the room puts a glass over it and she thanks the guys for not stepping on it. In that moment she realised that she has more care and compassion for a small spider than she has ever shown herself.
I have has similar breakthroughs on shrooms where everything seems so clear and you can’t believe you have never thought of these things before. I think they are great for a change in perspective when you are feeling stagnant or stuck in a rut.
Ive personally only ever heard of one person that ever was permanently fucked up after taking too much. He and a friend of mine took about 25 doses of acid each over 2 days at a festival. My buddy was fine but unfortunately his friend never really came back and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It’s kind of a chicken and the egg scenario. Likelihood is that he would have developed schizophrenia anyway but the 2500mg of acid was a catalyst.
I also have personal experience. I did a about 1g of shrooms with some guys I worked with when they came to my house. One of the guys started acting really strange, and started freaking out a little. We told him to just go into my room and try and chill and listen to some music. He came out like 2 mins later and was still acting very anxious and saying he didn’t feel good. We decided to change tactics and try to get to the bottom of why he was feeling shitty and some family issues came up which I won’t go into detail. Later, he started to believe he was dead and we were all dead too, sounds like he was on the brink of ‘ego-death’ as it can be very scary but doesn’t really make sense with the low dose. He then started saying that he needed to kill himself in order to wake up. This is the point when we had to start phsically restraining him so he wouldn’t go into the kitchen and try and get knives.
He started acting completely normal after about 30 mins of freaking out, so we kinda chilled a bit but obviously kept an eye on him. He then went to the washroom and suddenly we hear him saying ‘HELP HELP, IM DYING, I NEED HELP, COME QUICK!’
I run into the washroom and he is on the phone so I take the phone out of his hands and he had dialled 911 and was speaking to the operator. At this point I said fuck it and spoke to the operator and told him to call an ambulance because this dude was becoming a danger to himself. I told him that he was talking about killing himself so he called the cops too. My house was 40 mins in either direction from the cop shop or hospital so it took them forever to get there. My one buddy was holding him down while I was on the phone to the operator for about an hour. Operator was real chill and was saying things like ‘damn, talking to Someone I don’t know on the phone for an hour is the last thing I would want to do if I was on mushrooms’.
The cops ended up coming and the dude just stood in my kitchen facing the wall with his eyes closed, the cops were standing 10ft behind him and trying to talk to him, he wouldn’t respond. He then randomly fell backwards into the floor like a tree being felled in the woods. The police then picked him up and took him to the ambulance and took him to hospital. I saw him at work 3 days later. He was totally normal and apologised and said it brought up some fucked up shit that happened to him from his childhood.
TL;DR, if you had fucked up shit has happen to you, don’t take too many psycadellics. Or do in a controlled environment with a therapist and it may help you. Don’t do too much if you have a family history of schizophrenia.
