Business Speech, need YOUR help

Hey guys, doing a business speech for my second year Management course. The speech can be about anything business oriented but im at a standstill in thought. I was originally going to do it on why compensation (tips) is a good thing but I feel that I cant really make a passionate speech that I actually care about on that subject... Anyway please give me some ideas it would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot. (+karma)
 
wow i cant help you but i do know that you must start your speech with "now i now what your thinking compinsation is...." and i dont know what it means either so consider this post a free bump lol
 
ding ding dingjust go on a fat rant about how companies like walmart fuck over small businesses and all the othe reasons small businesses are such an ordeal. It may not be your style to cpmlpain about the system or wever but I could go on for days about this.
 
if its for your second term on management class i take it you should talk about something management related. A very good topic right now is when do you decided its proper to cut expenses (say overhead expenses, fixed, variable...) vs. laying off employees? how do you decided which areas are most profitable, where you can move assets to, to maximize profits. like the saying goes, Productivity= outputs over inputs, you want the greatest output with the least input (without sacrificing quality). things of this nature should get you started.
 
^ your thinking of retrenchment strategy which would be cost cuts and layoffs, but when you become a bigger company you dont necessarily need to layoff people but you can cut costs definately... i dont know I may do it on that. Liked the Walmart monopoly idea alot too. I really don't know.. any other ideas?
 
^ trust me, i like your idea a lot, and i'd find it really interesting, but would the rest of the people in my college class find it interesting?
 
i'm a business school student and i do my projects/essays/etc on skiing all the time; if i'm more interested and passionate about my subject then the assignment turns out better and ultimately the class likes it. why would you not want to write about something you're stoked on?
 
im definately stoked on it, i was gonna do my speech about why the skiing market is all dried up (over 30 different ski companies now) but i just feel that the rest of my class wouldnt be able to understand a lot of things. my class is like all asians and has a couple 30+ year olds in it
 
Indeed, people who use skiing (or just about any sport, for that matter) as the subject for a school project not only alienate those who have no idea what is going on, but come across as a little bit of an idiot in that the only thing they can relate to is sports.
 
yea exactly man, i wouldnt say they come across as stupid, but they definately alienate people which isnt cool and not good for building interest in a speech. I just want a good subject, it's not a long speech (only 5 minutes) but I want it to be able to put a valuable message across. I'm really good at making and presenting speeches just not good at choosing the subject I really want when were given the option.
 
im in a management class now too, i like the idea about writing about a ski shop, but you could emphasize on how you would manage your company, if itd be a corporation, sole-prop., partnership, etc..then how you would make a profit and stuff like that
 
talk about the importance of motivating and empowering individual workers in your company that hold lower level jobs. discuss how for a business to succeed as a whole, even the most seemingly insignificant tasks really do impact the entire company. you can even relate this to a ski resort...say that your lift attendant is being an unenthusiastic asshole to skiers getting on the lift...for those customers, they'll associate the entire company with that one jerk. so as management, its important to make your workers feel like they ARE important, not just working a minimum wage part time job.

and for the people that said talking about skiing in classes is never applicable...wrong! its lame to write an essay or something on skiing, but there are ways to incorporate skiing successfully. i'm at the cornell hotel school, (#1 hospitality school in the world holla), and i plan on going into resort management/skiing stuff. so for me, its really useful to use skiing for projects, etc because....thats what i plan on doing with my life hah
 
wow, i really like this man... you know what your talkin about. I think i will use this if its okay with you.. This I can be passionate about because I've worked at many jobs, and when management treats you well and looks after you, you will put more of an effort in to go the extra mile in your work... thanks a tonne man + Karma... + Karma to all of you for your help actually.

(operative is like first line employee it goes like Top manager, middle manager, first manager then operative)
