Actually they might care. The purpose of hydrogen research is to become a more energy dependant nation. Hence we would need less oil imports, and in the future, since oil isn't a renewable resource, we'd have a source of fuel. I'm sure politicians care about still being able to drive a car. And who else is going to be helping develop technologies. Of course it's gonna be companies like Texaco. The current fuel providers need to look into the future to be able to stay in business. Hence they are the ones doing research and conducting studies on alternative fuel sources.

 
Dude, guess what country has banned Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Powered Cars and has put an enormous tax on fuel cells for other purposes......hmm....could it be the USA!!! No way....Yes Way! In japan they have hydrogen fuel cell cars for lease, I should know, I did my final project on it for school. There is one that has an equivalant of 1000HP, and the engine is the size of a camera. Since the Hydrogen burns so much hotter than gasoline, they don't need as much 'stuff' there, just enough to cool it down.

What are you talking about dude? The Wyden-Cox legislation is actually proposing tax credit for individuals purchasing qualified hydrogen powered cars. Everything regarding current legislation with fuel cells points to implementing tax credits for purchasing fuel cell technology and its development. And once fuel cell technology comes into the mainstream, it'll have to be taxed. States use fuel tax to fund the majority cost of road construction and maintenence.

 
Yes, but did you catch all of the taxes currently on hydrogen cell power? It's 3.7 something times higher than that on gasoline power.

there is a lot more oil to last us just 19 years. I think estimates are more around 80 years. But I wouldn't worry anyway, cars, machines, and manufacturing processes are getting more efficient every year. As for the population growth...well we just need nice plague to wipe out a couple hundred million people, that'd set us back.

I did a report 5 years ago in highschool. I think there were two models. One with extreme growth, and that was about 40 years. The other one was a normalized trend, and it was about 80 years. So somewhere in there I guess. I have heard 70 a lot.

the us alone has an enormous stockpile of oil to last for an extremely long time plus if worse comes to worse there always is drilling in our own backyard. but there in lies another problem without the monies the middle eastern and other parts of the world from oil, they would become even poorer clearing a way for the rich in the country to take over and become unruly dictators causing worl problems. unfortunately this goes a lot deeper than just saving the environment, which by th eway i am all for.

*chuckle* chem was my best subject thru college. you see, the most economical way to produce hydrogen in commercially useful quantities is from methane, which happens to contain 4 hydrogen molecules, which beats water all to shit. methane is simply decomposed chemically, producing mainly CO and CO2 (pollutants) and hydrogen (H2). To obtain H2 from water, you must use electrolysis to break the strong and chemically unique bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen, which requires vast ammounts of electricity and costs about 2/3 more.

Yea I know how many mols of hydrogen methane has. I've had college chem too. You also get a lot of methane from decomposition at landfills (I'm guessing you knew that). I was just saying that, beacuse you made it sound like the only source for more hydrogen implying that hydorgen wasn't a renewable resource.

 
but they are developing cars that would fill up on water because it is a renewable resource and wont emit co2 and co, however i think they should use hydrogen peroxide because the bonds are extremely weak and easy to break as well as it would give off water or o2 depending on how it was broken down.

dude, Using water for hydrogen fuel cells beats the energy amounts excreted by use of gasoline by like 10:1. And all that is produced is Hyrdrogen and Oxygen, which can be then re-combined and combusted again...and again....and again.
