Bulking up on P90x.. K+

I dont work out at all really besides playing hockey everyday and my back looks like that... what are you trying to prove?

what the fuck happened to this thread, its like this has turned into the biggest shit fest ever.

i mean what the fuck is that picture, what the hell is wrong with you saying "im disel" im so bad ass.

who cares what your max bench is, i bet your one of those tool bags who just benches and curls because he only works out to look good for the females. or males in your case.

whats your squat max? clean?

4 pages later Im sure its already been said but the old school lifts with heavy weight is prob the best way. heavy enough that you're only doing like 5 reps at most per set, it may feel embarrassing but most experienced lifters in the gym will realize what you're trying to do and won't think that you just mistakenly picked up way too much weight.

Mark Rippetoe is the reason my squat is where it's at. I did SS for the first 5 months and did GOMAD.

I know what an assistance lift is dude, the reason I do dumbbell bench as an assistance lift for ME bench is because I see carry-over. A lot of people I know see carry-over as well. Get stronger in dumbbell press=get stronger in benchicles. Again, it's entirely dependent on the person but the majority of kids I know do well with db bench as assistance.

Maybe calling rows assistance was too far, supporting exercise I suppose. You need a strong back to press heavy and that's why I do rows.

I use good mornings as a limbering exercise for deads. I like to sink as far down as possible right before I pull and good mornings help me get there. I don't load them with weight, just try and focus on ROM as much as possible.

I want big trapz..

That's fine that you call bullshit man. I've been working my ass off to get where I want to be, if you don't believe me then so be it. Maybe we'll meet up some day and I'll show ya :)

you better walk out that door right now to the closest gym if you want to be on time for summer. a body doesn't happen over night.

during exercise there is a higher chance for injury to your peepee, its instincts, when our ancestors were getting their exercise fighting sabertooth tigers, they wanted their packages to shrink so that they wouldn't be as vulnerable a target

this thread made me think of Mac....

to OP: p90x is an incredible fitness program. i have no doubt you will get better results and feel better if you stick to p90x for the 90 days, rather than go to the gym and do some stuff for 90 days (unless you create a good lifting and cardio routine and stick to it).

so why the fuck were you reccomending a complete beginer to follow a 5/3/1 program and to only do the big movements once a week?

this is the issue with people who actually know a lil about the gym- they get so excited they start spouting about advanced techniques that they are stoked on instead of talking about the boring shit that will work best.

A complete begineer needs to spend 4-6 weeks learning and grooving the movement patterns, and building up a base level of strength before he/she actually starts to drop the reps and up the weight IMO.

and unless you are 250lbs+ im not gonna believe you on the 1260lbs. sorry. not that you'd care...

The good thing about 5/3/1 is it has carry-over. If you're a smart beginner, then it's the program for you. Military press and accessory work will help your bench, deadlift and accessory work will help your squat. You're working the muscles you need twice a week, which is what you want..

I don't see why it's such a tough thing to believe? My whole family is strong, shit my uncle even set the Canadian firefighter record for bench press at the firefighter games with 505 raw. My mother and father are both very athletic and all of my cousins are too(my cousin Kyle is supposed to be top 5 in the ohl draft this year). I work my ass off to get my lifts to improve and with 5/3/1 I don't really stall out ever.

Think about it dude, if you had a year of uninterrupted working out with no plateaus? You get strong pretty quickly. Shit some kids that I play with dwarf me in terms of strength. Talking 225 for 25 and squatting 495 for sets of 12.

there's a lot you have to take into account when your tryin to bulk up like what your diet is and how committed you are, that said something is better than nothing. what might be helpfull is protein shakes, there good for an extra boost of energy and it helps rebuild muster post workout. hope I helped

fyi these numbers to do add up. if they are repping 225 25 times then they are hitting 405ish as their max.

if they are repping 495 12 rimes they are hitting around 650-700 as their max.

there are these little nuggets of bullshit interspersed with good advice.

Again, why arent you recomending SS if "it got you to where you are today"? you dont want people to get strong?

FUCK YEAH IM A BIGGER MEATSTICK THAN YOU. this thread is fucking stupid. Lifting should be used as part of a workout plan for better overall fitness. for a sport. lifting for the sake of lifting is stupid imo

and paying hundreds of dollars to slide down snow is pretty stupid if you think about it too. if it makes someone happy, is safe, and isnt hurting anyone else, why would you hate on it?

Lifting is a pretty darn good stress release for me, and being able to shape my body the way a sculptor would is pretty cool...imo.

i can you ignorant clown. who cares what you can bench. as mentioned before, what can you squat, what can you power clean, and what can you push press? try doing something functional.

this thread is so idiotic and full of dick measuring it's unreal. and you are the main reason for that. check your ego you idiot. there is always somebody out there who's bigger/stronger/more cut than you. stop being a prick about it.

this is so damn stupid.

i doubt op has touched a weight in his life, so why would you recommend something like this to him?

can op plan a workout that will actually help him? no.

op you need to see someone who can plan a workout that will keep you growing and not overworking one muscle group.

Benching doesn't mean shit. Every fucking high school kid goes to the god damn gym and works out chest and biceps everyday. How often do you really use your chest for everyday shit. No one squats, deadlifts or works out legs. It's fucking stupid.

i lift for the three F's. they are, in no particular order-

-Fucking

-Fighting

-Freeskiing

I want to look good so its easier to attract hot females

I want to be able to protect myself and my buddies when shit goes down

I want to be strong enough to stomp that big air, and meaty enough to absorb big crashes

Bench helps when you are shoving, and punching, and a bigger chest exudes confidence and health(females are instinctivly attracted to it).

Gym time is also "me" time. its almost meditative for me, seeing as how i have almost zero downtime throughout a normal day. hate all you want, but at least i can admit my true motivations for training the way i do.

hahah all valid points, you included that you want muscle to absorb big crashes too. Shits legit, but the other guys only argument was he could bench this much so it made him stronger. All I was saying is there is more important things than benching.

i was doing walking lunges today with dumbbells, forward and backwards between squat sets, its gunna hurt tomorrow, and i love it

Or ya know..I was talking about benching when I said 25 reps at 225. Seeing as it's a combine test(the only standardized lift for Football players). Also, don't use fucking rep calculators, they don't work that well. I can do 20 reps at 315 for ATG squats. My max is NOT 668 lbs.

SS was good for my squat, but not really anything else. 5/3/1 works as well as SS but for 4 exercises instead of 1, so I believe it is superior.

i dont use rep calculators

and if you still think prescribing a 5/3/1 program to a complete beginer who doesnt even know how to do the movements is a good idea, well, you are just wrong.

True say, but I'd say core trumps everything. Someone with a strong core will own someone with strong legs/chest.

Turned out to be a great video. I started out around 155 and now am nearing 200 lbs. I was hammer curling 30 lbs dumbbells and received some sass for doing so. But watching Kai validate my habits makes me feel better I suppose.
