Best Mountains in Tahoe??

Im moving from sunday river maine to truckee. Going out next week to find a house. Have to start thinking about where I want to ski this winter. Where should I buy a seasons pass to? And does anyone know if theres college deals out there?

northstar has good parks, but big crowds and it's flat.

my favorite's kwood, but that's a trek from truckee.

i'd say alpine is your best bet. or squaw if you have teh moneys.

I've only been once and I decided to go to Squaw and I didn't regret it. I decided on Squaw because a buddy of mine that works at Heavenly told me Squaw was way more legit. haha

Sierra is so much fun!!! Kirkwood is definitely my favorite in south lake, but Sierra is a close 2nd... Heavenly also can be a really good time if you know the mountain well and don't go on crazy busy days

They're not as well known but Tahoe Donner Downhill, Donner Ski Ranch and Soda Springs are some of the best resorts in the North Shore.

I would suggest Alpine, Squaw, and Sugar Bowl. They have the best terrain on the north shore.

I would not bother with Boreal or Northstar. Neither is much of a mountain, and isn't that the point of moving to Tahoe?

Squaw is insane. Between college and grad school I lived in Tahoe for 5 years. I skied Squaw everyday, so obviously I love that mountain. I don't know what you are planning for work, but when I was there you could ski instruct part time and get a Squaw pass. Back then you only had to work 25 days, as long as they were mostly weekend/holiday. If you can find a night job, where you will make most of your money, that is a good way to go with Squaw. I absolutely love the mountain, so I would obviously recommend that route.

You can't go wrong with Alpine either, one of the steepest mountains anywhere with lots of killer hike-to terrain. Alpine has a cheaper pass too, so you could work nights and not have to deal with a day job to get a pass.

Sugar Bowl is a great mountain too, although not as big.

I would advise either Squaw or Alpine. If you want to ski park all day at Boreal that's fine, but I don't see the point of moving to Tahoe to ski mediocre terrain.

Kirkwood is sick, but a LONG way from Truckee.

Definitely go Squaw or Alpine. Flatstart sucks and is crouded with asians. Especially if you ride weekends. Northstar is a clusterfuck.

agreed. i choose Alpine. squaw is fun, boreal has good night riding, northstar has a fun pipe, sugarbowl can be fun too. Alpine is your best bet tho

From Truckee, HANDS DOWN, Northstar for the park, Alpine for everything. Alpine is the best place in the world: small crowd, amazing mountain, good park, awesome people, great atmosphere, easy drive.

Squaw if you feel like getting in line at 6am on pow days so you can get 1 or 2 good runs in.

Alpine if you want to ski pow for a few days every storm.

I assume that's why you moved to Tahoe.

see, that's such bullshit. every time i've skied squaw on a powder day (which is a lot since i grewup skiing there, alpine, and sugar bowl), i've never had a hard time finding powder, even on weekends, you just gotta stay away from KT. but of course the powder stays longer at alpine either way.

Mango, when he says good runs, I think he means runs where you only cross a few other tracks. I know that skiing at alpine, I can find stretches of a couple hundred vertical feet without any tracks at all a few days after the storm, but at Squaw, after 2 or 3 runs, the only places the snow stays untouched is on Silverado, Solitude, and Granite Chief. And even there it doesn't stay virgin for long.

haha, i can't argue that cuz that's exactly what i did. i was one of the bay area weekend warriors making those tracks.

But what I said is true. I have friends who ride at Squaw daily who make the comment the couple times they come visit at AM that "I love how you can get full pow runs here, at Squaw you have to be in with coffee and breakfast on pow days to get runs like this."

But by all means, everyone stick to Squaw, it's all lift accessed and there are celebrities there.

Not to mention how much Jonas (AM's park builder) sucks at building jumps...

i will defend jake here by saying... that no one from the east knows about pow like you guys do. if i went out west my mind would change from liek 95% park 5 trees/pow to like 100% pow lol

Ehhh, Squaw is awesome, I'm not going to say that you get more pow then you do at Alpine because thats false, but I personally like squaw more, it gets skied up fast, but you can definitely ski powder all day, and with some hiking the next day to. I love it and pick Squaw over Alpine, but honestly will probably be switching over to Alpine next season (although I am only in Tahoe school breaks) because the college pass is a sick deal and my family will have two kids in college next year, and there boundary policy is much better. Overall you can't go wrong with either. Both are amazing mountains, squaw has a lot more epic stuff and I personally like the vibe there, seeing big skiers/boarders tee off, everyone cheering when someone throws down or eats shit. I just really enjoy squaw and the terrain is just awesome, but again Alpine is sick to, so either way.

Im livin in Truckee right now, you cant beat Nstar and Boreal when they are so close, Boreal good at night, out in back of Truckee has some dope back country spots

Definitely do Alpine or Squaw. Both have college passes for like $300 and Alpine's is also valid at Homewood too, I think.

First of all heavenly isn't northshore. Second of all there is a reason that heavenly has one of the largest snowmaking systems in north america, it actually gets the least snow in tahoe. While it does have some great terrain, saying heavenly is the best for pow is like saying mcdonalds has the healthiest food

pretty much what everyones saidif you wanna ski park/ northstar, its sick, nice park, but really crowded unless you get there fast pass but its rediculously expensive
if you wanna go further but for an all around mountain squaw good park but great terrain and the most "all around" mountain nearish truckee
