Best Guitarist of All Time

Since this came up in the Hendrix thread, who do you think is the best guitarist of all time?

My vote goes to John McLaughlin, formerly of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Angus Young (AC/DC), Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) and Eric Clapton. The three best guitarists ever.

The skull thump. A quick blow usually dealt to the side or back of the head. Simply flick them in the head with your finger. An alternative is to smack your child up side the head with your palm. Very useful for teaching your child to read when he or she makes a mistake. Hitting your child when he or she is learning builds confidence, or undermines confidence--I can't remember which. - Maddox (www.maddox.xmission.com)

hahahaha john mayer....definately not. dave is definately up there, but i dont think so. carlos santana was good, but i havent heard him in awhile, so i cant really compare him to newer stuff. eric clapton is amazing, but check out the dood in the videos that someone posted. INSANE

if carrots got you drunk, rabbits would be fucked up

^jack is best guitarest to ever live, he crreates the dopest rifs with highest sound quality and all the 30 men and 14 year old girls love it!!!!!!

Stevie Ray Vaughn...If you like Hendrix you'll love Stevie. His technique and passion is just amazing. Don't know about the best but definetely top 5.

Mommy is right, it is nobody in Rock. anybody who can play decent Celtic or Spanish classical guitar is waaay better than anybody named so far

ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha kurt cobain? i hope your kidding, not even in like the top 10,000 guitarists

^really im a huge nirvana fan but hes a pretty bad guitarist i mean he even admitted it

he is in my opinion one of the greatest songwriters of all time though

I've heard some of Slash's non-rock recordings. He's pretty good at neo-flamenco.

Clapton hands down. Saw him in Denver last summer and nearly cried he was so good. (OK that's an exageration but you know)

Stewie: Well, I'd love to stay and chat, but you're a total bitch.

It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

Eric Clapton - Because he's the man.

Dave Matthews - Because not only can he do some amazing stuff... but he can do it while he's singing!

Eric Clapton can sing and play too, big whoop wanna fight about it?

Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Page and Eric clapton. Some of the best more modern would be Kirk Hammet or Tom Morello

Pink Is Punk

kmart, i agree, but dave matthews is usually standing, running around on stage, and screaming into the microphone

clapton sits on a stool.

the frusc is so under-rated but amongst industry insiders he is consistently rated as one of the most respected guitarists alive today in rock, if that helps! i should know!

i love the solos, there not all about shredding. They actually are interesting and sound unique. But by no means am i saying thattapping isnt cool but it often sounds very similar. Are you in the music industry???

No one can win best guitarist 'hands down'. What is this, technique, speed, composition, soloing, what...? You can't say in general... But here are a few :

-Soloing: This, I challenge anyone to say it isn't Jimi. Of course, you've probably seen a 'video' of someone doing something flashier than Jimi, but he would improv the hell out of that guy so bad...

-Riffs: Probably Jimmy Page. He's also a god at soloing, but he falls in an entirely different category then Jimi Hendrix.

-Melodic: Pete Townshend. I've never seen anyone mention the Who once on NS, but just for the overall composition of songs, I'd say Pete is the best.

-Real overall best guitarist: Probably some obscure classical guitar player that was or is in some lost country somewhere. No one will ever know. You can't define a BEST overall guitarist, just your personal favorites. But please, Kurt Cobain?

I would have to say Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the best guitarists ever, he plays some weird stuff but hes darn good

RaginCajin are you kidding me? don't bash on john mayer because he doesn't play your kind of music. he's an amazing jazz guitarist. have you ever seen one of his guitar solos? obviously not. so shut your mouth because you know nothing

It occurs that some people just don't have a fucking clue about what 'good guitarists' are. I accept the challenge of finding a better improvisational soloist than Jimi. Your answer is Joe Pass. My favourite guitarist is still Knopfler, though.
