Beatport sales chart : the death of dubstep.

Proper dubstep has thrived in the underground for the last 10 years, and will continue to do so. Poppy, commercial, mid-range cack is what beatport is referring to (which is unfortunately the sort of music with which many people identify dubstep by), a fad which I am very glad is ending

Yes, I am a semi professional underground house music dj. I have been involved in dance music since 1992 and have spun vinyl for 14years holding multiple residencies and have opened for an endless list of legendary producers and djs (im 37).

And if you read the article, and look at the sales charts, dubstep sales have dropped off to almost non existing.

Pretty meh list - I'd regard LAS and Gantz to be above all of those bar 1 (Kahn). Additionally, Skream deciding to jump over to disco doesn't deaden dubstep in any sense, so don't flatter him too much, mixmag. Genres evolve - artists come and go. The commercial side of the genre dying doesn't really mean anything either in terms of the genres journey - it's actually stronger than ever at the moment.

What happened to drum and bass is what's happening to dubstep now (just at a far more explosive rate), and if you've been in music for as long as you say you have then you'll know that these fads, however long they may last, typically don't detract from or even affect the true, core sound

Also, as I'm sort of satisfied deep house is working it's way more into the public eye, I'm also kind of unhappy about it. I've already heard some tunes that are becoming a generic, boring sound, similar to what happened with big room house (which is still, sadly, going strong). Hopefully the same doesn't happen to deep house, although it's already sort of started. Happy to see some music with some soul in the beatport top 10 though (Outlines by Mike Mago is not a bad track). Most of them suck though.
 
Its all the same crap. It has a time and a place at least for me to listen to. I could never listen to it at work or driving but at a party is one thing. Curious to see what the next big music genre will be. What else can people invent?

Wow, I've never heard this before. If you actually looked past mainstream dubstep and house you would see that it is certainly not "all the same crap." Saying an ambient track is the same thing as a hardstyle song is like saying Jack Johnson and Pantera make the same music. Yeah, they both use guitars, but a it's a totally different sound and vibe, suited for (mostly) different types of people. There is some electronic music (more than some) that you would never hear at a party, suited for home listening rather than raging your face off to. I'm so tired of people saying it's all the same; people need to stop with this bullshit and actually learn what electronic music is.

well gunna sound a bit elitist here, but "brostep" has been on the downhill for a while now. you can only listen to so much pounding from datsik or doctor p or whoever before head feels like its going to explode. the sub bassy OG underground scene in the UK is still doing as well as ever, and will continue to do so.

Kind of shocked that someone on newschoolers even knows who Frankie Knuckles is, are you familiar with alot of other underground house /Chicago house dj/producers? I used to run a night for six years and we had sneak, Farina, carter, etc etc.

In the house music world, progressive house is really laughed at, usually only really commercial club kids like prog.

As for nobody at your school liking deep house, well that is expected as this current generation mostly seems to not care wether or not a dj really mixes and you're generation seems mostly into commercial bangers. Sad but true.

Deep house has many facets. To me, the word deep means soulful, rich, musical depth, a sense of meaning, it takes you on a journey into your soul and helps connect your feet to your heart. Good house is about life, love, friendship, relationships etc etc. Take a closer listen and maybe you'll connect too.

lol at caring about the beatport charts.

dubstep has been dead for ages, deep house has been big for ages. the only thing about deep house is its now coming into the mainstream with artists like MK, Sigma, Ben Pearce, Hot Since 82 etc etc being played in the pop charts on the radio, as well as Disclosure coming along and taking the sound and making it into pop music.
 
You guys care way too much. Music is about exploration, expression, and getting together. If you are a listener, just keep finding new music and enjoy what you enjoy. If your producing/mixing music just keep finding new music and play/create what you enjoy. It's pretty simple.

And look at record labels like monstercat. They still post dubstep songs and they will continue to do so until the channel stops running.

This chart means nothing to me. The people who like dubstep in my school still like it and the plays/views on dubstep and DnB songs are still just as high as any other EDM song.

Deep house is useless bullshit to me. It's stuff like this that I can connect to. You know, things that actually have GOOD melodies


"Commercial bangers" is not what I'm into at all. Also not sure if this is prog house ^^^ but it's the kind of stuff I like.

Also, progressive house isn't laughed at in the house music world, you are just in a specific group that laughs at progressive house.
 
As much as I love EDM trap, I hate to say it's probably going to end up a lot like how the brostep trend kind of went. The only thing it's got going for it is that a lot more people are trying to develop they're own sound.

Well, I don't spend all day everyday on here but from what I have seen the majority have absolutely bad taste in dance music and usually are into laptop djing etc. I wouldn't expect it also because frankies moment in the main spotlight was in the very early years, the respect was always there but Derrick Carter has carried the torch for quite some time.

LAS, Gantz, Mikael, Kahn are all crazy.

TMSV deserved to be on that list for sure, love what hes doing.

Thelem is killing it, actually I like the direction J:Kenzo has taken Artikal in general, seems to be getting out of that dungeoney stereotypical sound Kryptic Minds started that got beat to death.

EshOne is killing it in the states, as is AxH.

And Ive been playing a ton of that jazzy stuff from Deep Heads, Mindstep, Chord Marauders, etc.

Find it funny that Killawatt is on there, dude has already seemed to head the techno route, hasnt he put out a bunch of stuff on Pinch's techno label?

Dubstep is very much alive and will stay that way, but without all the crap and hype. Like it better that way anyways.

I guess you could say Festival Trap even though it's hyphier sub genre but Turn Down For What was just scratching the surface. There is a much more alive underground scene that is starting more known. It's not dead or alive. Just coming back up to the surface.

Trust me I am well aware of non-mainstream trap from Flosstradamus and Rl Grime. It's just that you used the term "EDM Trap" which to me sounds like festival trap. I know plenty of good chill trap that's a little less known.

dude, i dont care what any of you say 09-10 was some of the most fun times to go to raves, just before the over commercialization of dubstep, right when people were starting to play that stuff out. shit was wild.

but i will say this, dubstep and electronic music does suck today. bring on the crunchy jams and instrumental psychedelia!

Sounds like 94-98. The earlier years of the original rave scene. It peaked and was basically thru by 1998 even though the scene continued it got really awful and eventually most people dissipated.

As for electronic music sucking today, either you were only into it for the drugs or haven't been exposed to quality. If you have any time. And are into techno and or house look up artists that have been relevant for two or more decades without sign of slowing down or ever stopping.

Guys like Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Diz, Mark Farina, Doc Martin, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Cox, Cajmere, I could go on for a while but those guys INVENTED dance music and have been touring the world nonstop for over 20 years. They were big pros in the 90's and they'll continue to be big pro's/legends way past the current edm trends.

Can't forget about Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills and Rob Hood. As a very serious techno head, the early names coming out of Detroit have influenced my life very much. In my opinion, techno and house are the only genres that will have any longevity in "dance" music. Even deep house will die. And like you mentioned, its crazy the longevity these artists have. I've seen Jeff Mills about 4 - 5 times, some under his aliases like Sleeper/Messenger Awaits, and each time it blows me away and he is bringing something new to the table. I still snatch up his records on Axis whenever I can find them.

Did you use to run nights in Chicago? I lived there for a sort time, saw D. Carter a bunch at Smart Bar, was a great time. One of the older Chicago DJs, Jordan Field, is playing at a warehouse here in Minneapolis in two weeks. As I said in my previous post, more of a techno head but I'm still psyched, the venue is awesome.

Not Chicago but I have booked Derrick Carter more than once. Jordan Fields, yeah I have a few records of his on catalyst, camouflage, and some other labels, good Chicago house. Been around forever and has remained under the radar. Yes how can I forget Derrick May, etc. I ALSO am a bita ttechno head.

Since i am from europe i dont know all the artists from chicago :) (but i am aware that thats the place were it all started)

but they do sound verrrryyyy good!
 
Yeah shitty beats with a sax wildly playing over it seems to be what the public understands as deep house. It's really a shame that those uninspired tracks get more sales then creative stuff. Not saying that having any saxophone in your track makes it bad, but most producers are over doing it. The sax should add to the beat not carry the song on its own.

Strangly people go crazy over this form of "deep house"
