Happened earlier this morning. Lots of speculation going on as to who they are.

They're letting the airport function as usual, speak Russian, and are heavily armed/ seem well trained and equipped. Good article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10666893/Ukraine-crisis-live-Russia-admits-its-troops-are-moving-in-Crimea.html

hollywood gossip is obviously way more important

oh also gay marriage and gun control. can't forget to talk about that stuff at least 22 hours of the day on MSM

but really though, get it together guys

Come on, this is like real life CoD. An armed force shows up out of nowhere and storms an airport? And now Russia is flying helicopters into the area? This could be Russia vs Georgia Episode 2, Crimea edition.

Oh shit. What would happen is Russia went in and occupied Ukraine.. Is there a possibility for war in Ukraine beyond just a civil war?

I doubt the west would risk getting tangled up in a war with Russia. I also doubt Russian would move beyond the Crimean.

Crimea is a semiautonomous region of Ukraine and is a majority ethnic Russian. Recently, there have been a strung of protests in favor of leaving Ukraine and joining Russia.

I see Russia using the turmoil as

A) a chance to strengthen their control on Ukraine (obvious)

B) swallow up some territory that is already very Russian to begin with (more risky for Russia... but seems to be what's happening)

putins doing this in retaliation for his hockey team

all jokes aside, shit is about to go down. Putin wants to use his troops

this is cray, its a way bigger deal than we seem to be hearing about. remarkably the new facebook trends thing has had more relevant news on this than CNN.

Im calling a return of a crap load of veteran Chechnian's and other bad dudes from Syria, shit will then hit the fan. This is crazy though, guess Russia's feeling pretty tough after Sochi.

AP reports that Russian Parliament has approved Putins request to send troops to Ukraine. Shit is about to hit the fan.

Russia now wants to remove their ambassador from the US. This is moving quick. Hey Barry, happy hour is over, lets get some sort of announcement or something here.

source? Don't exactly believe this.

The US ambassador is leaving Russia, but that's been known for a while since he stated he was stepping down about a month ago.

BBC. Go to for live coverage because all US news sucks.

Yuri Vorobyov, Ms Matviyenko's deputy, said during a debate broadcast live by Russian state TV that US President Obama had "crossed a red line" and "insulted" the people of Russia. "I think it is necessary to demand that the Russian president recall the Russian ambassador from the United States of America," he said.

The speaker of Russia's upper house, Valentina Matviyenko, is taking steps to ask President Putin to recall the Russian ambassador from the US - AFP.

Threads. surely these threats are extreme but its crazy they are being made in the first place.-

"Ukrainian parliament warns that if Russia doesn’t tread carefully it will be dealing with a nuclear power."

Ukraine signing their death warrant. Here's the deal:

They don't have nukes, and the PM is claiming they can make them in 3-6 months.

Russia can very easily take these statements and level Kiev in a day if they so choose, and do it semi-legally. Very dangerous thing to say.

Not really. Some of them want to, but they may not do it. But apparently the UN is having an emergency meeting today at some point.

"#ukraine amb to UN Yuriy Sergeyev tells me on @AJEnglish Ukraine & Russia are "close" to all out war, hopes situation does not escalate."

As they should, but Russia will walk in, say something along the lines of "Threats to russian lives/ threats from Ukrainian gov/ We will act to protect our citizens" and the rest of the security council will sputter and condemn them, and then next week russian armor will roll up and down Crimea.

why are so many Americans making it seems like Russia's actions are all about them? At this point it really has nothing to do with the US at all, yet you have American politicians saying stuff like "Russia seems to want another Cold War".

Someone just tweeted this picture. They claim it is from the Crimea, but I don't have any background on it/ context. Still a good picture.

yes really. A few politicians in the Kremlin saying they want something done is very far from being able to say that Russia wants it done and even further from it actually happening.

Double standard issues.

People criticize the US for getting involved in foreign affairs yet condemn us when we do not.

Besides, lets be honest, the UN is toothless and gutless in this situation. What other foreign country can stand up to Russia?

My point exactly though. China would never, and those countries would almost certainly want the backing of the United States when it comes to taking on Russia.

Meanwhile, the best Canada can do is offer 200k in aid. Step it up here Stevie, you can do better than that. What happened to Canada being the go-to nation for peacekeeping missions?

(This is from what I've read on twitter, so it may be incorrect)

The guy facing away in the last picture is using a rifle/grenade launcher used by Spetsnaz. They're wearing white armbands, which are associated with Pro-Russian forces in Crimea. I'm not sure whats going on in the picture, looks like a firefight? not seeing anything about that on twitter.

Fear mongering as usual.

NATO and the US need to keep their hands out of this. The Crimea was already headed to Russian control one way or the other.

The argument could be made that the Crimea, being semi autonomous from Ukraine, might not "deserve" (bad wording) a military intervention from the United States.
