Armed men take control of Crimean Airport

Jeez it's not WW3, in reality the situation is a lot like the Georgia/South Ossetia conflict back in 2008(?). Russia sees an opportunity to flex its muscles and gain land in an autonomous region that has some major upheaval in it. I doubt there would be any actual country to country war, Putin's not stupid, if anything there will just be the same skirmishes happening already with the new Ukrainan government supporters and the pro-Russian easterners. The Crimea is really just a puppet state for Putin, shouldn't have ever been considered Ukrainan.

you know one good thing about this whole thing is liveleak is getting flooded with mi-24 hind footage...aviation boner full mast right now

Yes, but its about principal. You can't just roll through a boarder and say " Its ours now". Hell in many/ if not all instances that has directly resulted in war. Russia flexing is muscles is one thing, this is sending troops across a border and taking a territory.

I think the comparison to the cold war is very apt. Putin has lead Russia to isolation and more towards imperialism since he came to power. Threats of taking the arctic, threats of intervention in Syria, escalation of armament in his nation. He wants the world to see Russia as it used to during the Soviet era.

This is a fucking powder keg, a HUGE one. Sure the Russians just want this peninsula, but its a show of force to other former soviet states that cutting ties with Russia is a bad thing. That throwing puppet PMs out will result in a show of force. That Russia, and by proxy, Putin's power should not be challenged.

Americans don't like bullies, and they really don't like when people invade other nations for no reason. NATO is in the same boat. If this doesn't get solved by talks, we could see a return to a "cold war" style of relations, or even war.

some cool before and after pictures in Kiev

I doubt that russia will ever fully hand over the Crimea. But I think this is a very very intresting situation and I wish there was more on it.

he probably has more important meetings to attend and things to think about with NATO/UN etc regarding the Ukraine. Especially considering a 'national security meeting' is about the US security and the situation in Ukraine is so incredibly far removed from the US at this point.

As a Pole I'm under the impression that if Russia actually tried to do anything in Poland there would be a global response.

While I agree with you, unfortunately if Russia invades I think they'll put troops on the ground. Hopefully UN/NATO troops instead of US troops.

The International community advised Russia not to send troops. To me that sounds like "if you send troops in we'll fuck ya up" (or at least defend Ukraine)

To the kid who said something about WW3. It has the very slim potential. Think about it, proxy war between the US and Russia through NATO/Ukraine vs. Russian army. Then, sparks out in other areas of eastern Europe. Western Europe gets pissed then sends troops in. We have an Axis and an allied powers just like that. All of that will probably never happen, but it has the very slim chance.

Well there's definitely the possibility of it becoming that. I haven't been that much updated, but Obama was threading with nukes and being retarded

Like you said yourself, you haven't been updated. So just stay quiet until you actually read something because that's not true.

This is the first decent shot i've seen of this rumor and it's pretty legit. Chances are their not highly paid terrorists so it's pretty narrowed down. Purely off the weapons and nerdy face masks.

Some of the videos on live leak are insane. Snipers just taking out dozens of anti government protesters or whatever. Just one shot kills.

from the Al-Jazeera live feed

"Ukranian military and naval bases in the Black Sea Peninsula have been surrrounded by unidentified gunmen thought to be Russian soldiers

NATO has accused Russia of threatening peace in Europe."

shietttttt

really? well let's put it this way: if Russia has troops on the ground in Ukraine and the Ukraine does nothing about it, is the Ukraine really a sovereign nation? Sovereignty isn't just a term for a line on a map, you have to be able to defend your borders.

What's happening: Ukraine saying it will not tolerate Russia invading its territory and saying everything it can while biding time hoping other countries will back its cause and send troops to help out. If this doesn't happen or if Russia blatantly starts flying its flag then they'll either be forced to fight or surrender the territory.

What Putin wants: Mother Russia. He wants it back to how it was in the Soviet era. They've already got their fingers in several surrounding countries and essentially control them (Georgia being an example. Georgians fought against it, kept their sovereignty, but the government is in the hands of the Russians through and through).

What I think is going to happen: Ukraine will not get the backing they need. Crimea and several other predominantly Russian parts of eastern Ukraine will be forfeit to Russia or become their own nation with the help of the Russians. No serious fighting.

Let's not forget this area has changed hands many many times over the years and Slavs are no strangers to lying and fighting and deceit. Just par for the course for eastern Europe really.

So wait, Russia took the chemical weapons out of Syria after that whole issue.... So does Russia have chemical weapons at their disposal now???

My opinion:

-Shore up "Mainland" Ukraine. Pour money/support personnel. I would avoid any peacekeeping force right now.

-Leave Crimea. As a region, it is pro-Russia to the core. As far as I'm concerned, it's gone. NATO and Ukraine can work in the future to win it back via political/legal means, but it isn't worth blood.

Exactly, the Crimea and the east is going to fall, it's Russian to the bone. Blood does not need to be spilt if Russia does not continue westward, it would be a death sentence for Putin both economically and in a physical sense, the EU will not mess about if their interests are in danger. Not to mention all those protestors in Kiev would love a chance to fight Russia, Putin would be fighting both the Ukrainian military and its people, dangerous situation.

Another question-

Will Russia annex Crimea?

or-

Will they allow Crimea to remain autonomous as a satellite state?

I believe the second option. In the 21st century, it's not so much the land/resources you own, it's the land/resources your allies own. Also, Russia could benefit from friendly neighbors.

Isn't this still unconfirmed? I saw reports of it on the Guardian but they made sure to say that it was unconfirmed sources and then reported that a source in the Ukrainian Defense ministry had heard nothing of the ultimatum.

from the update at 3:38 PM GMT onhttp://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/03/ukraine-crisis-russia-control-crimea-live

"He is not that senior but says he’s on a base right now and neither he nor the base commanders have heard anything of the sort. He said: “It’s probably another red herring to stir up trouble.”

I got it from BBC news ( I have the ap and it sends me live updates). There is no mention about it being unconfirmed.

The Russian defence ministry has apparently denied reports that Russian forces gave an ultimatum to the Ukrainian troops in Crimea (see 15:58 entry[/b]). "This is utter nonsense", a spokesman for the Russian defence ministry told Vedomosti, a Russian broadsheet.

Maybe there's a break in communication? Because time and time again I'm seeing that the Commander of the Black Sea Fleet issued an ultimatum- maybe without permission?
