Anyone ski backcountry?

I ski bc. Gotten out of bounds a little under half my days this year. Mostly ski Berthoud/Dry Gulch/Loveland pass around the front range. I've appreciated the beta you guys have provided here and on TGR. Would love to get out with you guys sometime!
 
well speaking of which. I did 2 days at the resort and there's still not enough open most places to disperse the crowds (the way I like it anyway haha) so I'll be at berthoud monday.
 
Well I just moved to Boulder from Canada and love to ski the BC. Problem is I didn't bring any avy gear down. Just been trying to find good resort spots to hit up, but I am already regretting it. Although, I went to Vail Friday and was pretty impressed with some of the terrain and the fact that it was dead.
 
try and take an avalanche class, so worth it

a beacon doesn't make you safe, you need to know how to assess terrain and make safe decisions as well as how to use your gear if an avalanche does happen
 
ya, i have been tested with a beacon for ski patrol at copper and have learned a good amount from them.
 
all I know is floral park was DEEP today. looks like it hasn't been skied by anyone the past weeks.
 
I ski berthoud and loveland mostly. Berthoud is my favorite though im still getting familiar with the terrain but id like to ski with some people who know the area a little better. PM me if your interested. I ski mostly tuesday, thursday, and friday.
 
I dig it. I'm real close to Cameron Pass. Sometimes hit Berthoud and Loveland. Really want to ride RMNP this season.

Dane, who do you usually ride Berthoud with?
 
I second this, except RMNP is great for late spring and summer skiing. winter skiing in RMNP blows. I have had about 10 winter days in RMNP, none of them have been above average days of skiing.
 
EXACTLY. There is no good winter skiing at RMNP. This was not filmed there in February, either. Definitely somewhere else. Probably Loveland.

My buddy Collin filmed that. I visited RMNP a dozen times last winter, always had miserable conditions. The snow was just never deep enough and you could never send any of the pillows. Owen definitely took my word for it too (starting at 4:02). I gotta stop posting videos of that horrible, horrible place. It makes me depressed. I should just go stick out my thumb at Loveland Pass where it's never windblown, never crowded with gapers, and everyone is avalanche aware. Anything is better than RMNP in the winter.

i'm up in East Vail most days of the year, i guess you'd call that sidecountry but there are some gooooooooods up here... otherwise a few days per year at berthoud and loveland pass, and a few up on vail pass... and a few 14ers in the spring...

if any of you are interested in getting some east vail lines and you have your avy gear and a good grasp of what's going on, i'd be happy to show you some great lines
 
im up at east vail a lot. sometimes loveland pass. open to anything good.

god RMNP is awesome, almost every day I've had up there has been great. Except for maybe peaceful valley when its windy. Dragonstail coulior has got to be the best bang for the buck I have ever skied. Anyone interested in getting up for some fun lines this spring? I would love to hit ypsilon, the north face of longs, frozen elk coulior, and I'm sure a gazillion more I don't know about.

I have my first field day tomorrow for Avalanche Safety Level I and we're going up Webster Pass. I've been there in the summer off-roading but I've heard in the winter it can have some amazing bc but also very avalanche prone.

Anyone been back there in the winter??? I'm stoked!
 
I've only off-roading on webster pass. shit's fuckin scary. I've snowshoed in teh area from Montezuma but not skied. When we snowshoed out of Montezuma, there was a sickkkk booter built over one of the abandoned mines though.
 
Backcountry in general just get's so tracked out that it's not even worth it nowadays. Let's all go ski urban on a pow day!

having a sled can really get you some legit access. So far Ive barely scratched the surface but some awesome areas are:
North fork/tiger road out of breck
Montezuma/radical hill/little alaska
Boreas pass
vail pass - tons of stuff easy access.

I processed about $1,000 in donations at work for this guy today. It's very somber feeling, but uplifting to see how tightly knit the ski community can be for anyone who lives a positive life and loves skiing out-of-bounds as much as life itself.
Remember to be safe this weekend with all the new snow, and take a run for Kyle where ever you make some turns.
