Any other parents on NS?

I 've only recently been active on here due to a need to vent my rage until I'm off my ankle monitor and can actually ski, and I've been wondering; any other parents on NS? I'll be 20 in December and my son was born September 13th. Might be TMI but sitting in the operating room while the docs perform a cesarian and seeing my son pulled out of my girlfriend, hearing his first scream, was seriously an adrenaline rush only comparable to stomping something or skiing a line that made you shit your pants. Anyway, I was shuffling around on a pair of plastic Kharus you strap your snow boots into as soon as i could walk and I can't wait until he's doing the same. It got me thinking; I was born in 93, I remember watching ski movies in the Stitzmark (bar/restaurant at the bottom of Alyeska) while I ate nachos and my dad had a beer, and over the years seeing the transition of Glenn Plake and 210's to Pep Fujas and twins. I remember it was 6 years of skiing switch on race skis 6 sizes too big for me until I got on a pair of twins when I was 13. I watched skiing change, and now my son is born into an era where I'll be building mini-versions of the pvc rails i slide every year as soon as the first snow falls for him.

What will this generation of "freeskiers" kids be like? How much different will they be from us? Look at your parents. Mine remember the days of leather lace-up boots with as much ankle support as a pair of converse all-stars. My parents remember when Warren Miller was actually legit and moguls were cool. Who will my son look up to in the world of skiing, if he so chooses to immerse himself in it as I have?

I learned to ski powder on pointy-tipped skinny skis back in the 90s, while my son will have the option of a rocker'd ski by the time he's 7 (which he won't get unless he can actually ski powder without the assistance of modern ski tech, he's gonna learn it right, like I did)

I guess what I'm getting at is; any other's on here with kids? Kids who will look at Partly Cloudy as a "classic"? What kind of offspring will a generation of tall-t wearing (myself not included) backwards riding, rail sliding, double-corking, pot-smoking skiers produce? I know mine will be sliding pvc when he's 3.

Im glad you are stoked on a kid thats fucking crazy...

Im the same age as you and if I had a child right now both of our lives would be ruined. Good job being responsible enough to deal with that though.

thats crazy to think about how much skiing has evolved and im curious to see where it will go in the future

20 years old, has a kid, and is currently on house arrest with a tether. OP is definitely going places hahaha. Holy shitballs, where do some parents go so wrong?

I laughed also OP talked about "in the day". Im 6 years older.

But the answer about parenting: you have so many tools and activities at your disposal. Nearly every mountain has a race team and a mogul team so they can learn the basics of skiing. They your kid grows out of the team, they decide if they wanna keep going.

Skiing has never been so available!

I know. I struggle to come to terms with their obvious disappointment in me and disdain for my very existence every day. It's tough, but I manage.

This.

My professional interest (social worker) is piqued. My initial, uninformed reaction is you should probably sort some things out in your life before worrying about your kid hitting rails at 3.

A kid at 20? ...do you by chance live in a state that goes by the name Utah?

But really, Bravo for doin that shit, Im 5 years older and I still wanna wait at least another 5 before that.

Good luck with your whole situation, sounds nuts

I am currently 26 and my skier husband of nearly 5 years is 30, we have a son that was born in August. We plan on allowing him to learn to ski when he is ready and shows interest. We both learned at 3 but who's to say he will have any desire to do the same.

AR6rider, i appreciate your hate and sarcasm, but eat my fucking ass. Like you've never made a mistake in your life. My son is the best thing that ever happend to me, and unlike most my age, I'm doing everything I can for him. As for the house arrest:I come from Talkeetna, it's the only place with an airport and pilots skilled enough to access Denali, making it a small drinking town of 800 with a climbing problem. We've been heavy drinkers since sophmore year, but I had mellowed out after the summer of '12 (year I graduated) and had been living/working in Anchorage. Went up to TK for a good ol' time one weekend, drank a 5th of Jack Daniels chased with another 5th of R&R (I like'd my whiskey) and blacked the fuck out. I got in a few confrontations since I tend to be antagonistic for my own amusement when I'm wasted. We party down by the river, bonfire, on a clear day/night (summer in AK doesn't get dark) you can see the full scope of the Alaska range with Denali looming over the town, it's a view I never get tired of. Anyway, I was forced away from the river by some friends who were used to dealing with my drunk ass when I got that way. I got angry, threw my truck keys at my friend, and proceeded to storm off. Next thing I remember is 14 hours later I'm in Palmer, which is 70 miles away and since Talkeetna has 4 state troopers to cover a 2000sq mile area, and no holding facility, anyone they arrest has to be driven down to Mat-Su Pre-trial where I spent the remainder of my weekend. I had apparently (keep in mind, what I'm about to tell you is based on friends and acquaintances filling in the blanks for me) broken into a local lodge/restraunt. I broke in by completely ripping the back door off the hinges, where I then proceeded to grab a fire extinguisher and empty it around the inside, I then broke said fire extinguisher in half. I ripped all the dispensers off the wall and destroyed the shower in one of the bathrooms, and broke a window. The cops showed up, and arrested me. Apparently as soon as I was handcuffed in the back of the cruiser I was trying to kick out the windows of said car. Halfway to Palmer they got fed up, and pulled over. One of the officers opened the door as I threw a kick, which I subsequently happened to plant on his face, which is where my assault charge came from. Then he broke out the pepper spray, not the hip can, the fire-extinguisher sized one they keep in the car for fuckers like me, and completely hosed me down. Next thing I remember is coming to in a holding cell, stripped down to my underwear (inb4 rape jokes), my whole body and eyes burning from the pepper spray shower I received. When they got me there I blew a .173. Now do the math, I quit drinking around midnight when I blacked out, was arrested at 3am, and in jail at 6am, meaning at the time of the incident, I was somewhere in the .3 range in a full on blackout drunken rage. Anyway I still blew a .11 and was too intoxicated for my first arraignment (it even says "too intoxicated for first arraignment on the report). So I spent a weekend in jail, was convicted 2 weeks later of assault 4 on an officer and criminal trespass 3, both misdemenors. That was the deal they gave me since originally I was charged with assault 4, burglary 1 (felony), disorderly conduct (mis), and criminal mischeif (felony). I had a totally clean record before then so I narrowly avoided 15 years. I started my sentence October 1st and I'm off December 27th with 3 years unsupervised probation, which just means if i commit any jailable offenses, I have to serve my remaining suspended sentence (180 days). As for where I'm going with my life? I'll be paying off my 1400$ restitution to the business I fucked up, and next spring I'll be getting certified to run heavy equipment and get my CDL, and with that training I hope to be able to run snowcats during the winter so I can stay immersed in the ski community, while properly providing for my family. 8 weeks of school and I'm making 40$/hr with lots of overtime during the summer, fuck your college degrees. And AR6rider, I'm not sorry you're too much of a bitch to handle what I'm doing like a man, and next time you use some 50 cent song in your shitty edit, taste some jail food first, it'll make you seem more legit. Fuck you

Thanks to everyone else for some the contribution to the conversation, and I hope the story provided you with some chuckles. Also AR6rider, my parents are great people. Not perfect, but they raised me and my brother just fine. They didn't go wrong, it as my own damn stupidity because you know, I'm an adult and I take responsibility for my fuckups. Shit happens, it's called life.

Dude I ask myself this question all the time. I've got two kids now and last year I was dragging my son around on those plastic little skis that strapped onto his boots.

Its so interesting to think about what the future will hold... what they'll be into. I mean hot dogging was fucking dope to our parents, and they were doing acid and cocaine while slaying moguls. Hell, we're kind of pussies compared to what the gnarly hot doggers used to do.

Of course, that all gave way to classic freestyle and Warren miller being a family outing. I'd imagine that we'll follow the same road given enough time...

I can also hope that we won't though. I want to raise the next generation of skiers knowing that its OK to just go out and enjoy the mountain. Winning contests isn't nearly as important as enjoying a solid day of shredding with your good buddies.

My goal is to keep that idea alive, and to have it stay for generations to come.

They asked for the story, I gave it. and I blew a .17 6 hours after I stopped drinking so I had already had time to process a fair amount of it. And to the social worker, yeah it's a shit situation with the arrest and all, but being able to see my son and thinking about the future with him is what keeps me positive. I'm not perfect and I'm still learning so I get where your coming from. And I'm not sorry 90% everyone on here has the attention span of a goldfish and can't read my entire posts.

Mine too, I'll introduce him to skiing at an early age, but if he decides its not his thing when he's older, that's totally fine. He's my son, but he's his own person. Really I just want him to find something he's passionate about, something that drives him and defines him the way skiing has for me.

This reminds me of my dad telling me how he learned to ski, when he was 8 his uncle went to the dump and found him a pair of used skis that were easily 215cm (he was only 4'8" then) which he still has. They are as stiff as a 2x4 and you literally had to screw the edges on. He hiked his front yard until he moved across town, and then he would walk every night after school to a little ski hill where he and his friends would build jumps and cut down trees to make gates.

He taught me too ski in our front yard when I was 3, I'm thinking I'll continue the tradition and teach my children at 1 and a half.

That's awesome. I think actually learning how to ski without twins and sliding rails and skiing powder on race skis definitely had its advantages. Baby steps, your not much of a skier if all you can do is slide metal and be an acrobat. Any park rat can land in pow off a booter with a pair of hellbents

Thank you for completely proving you are a massive fuck up. I am more of a man that you can ever hope to be, you pathetic piece of shit, and that's saying something. Go brag about getting drunk and kicking cops in the face to your whoretrash slut girlfriend while you scrounge for pennies in the street to buy your bastard child a new diaper. Maybe if you're lucky, once the C-section scar heals, she can start turning tricks on the corner again for a few extra bucks.

People asked for the story, so I delivered, not bragging simply an account of an unfortunate event of my own doing. If you can remember the original post it was about our generation, the skiers of today raising the skiers of tomorrow, and in fact really has nothing to do with how or why I'm on the ankle monitor. Anyway, tomorrows skiers? I'm really looking forward to see how the technology of the skis changes. Also what will be powering the lifts in 20 years? You get to do a lot of thinking about skiing in my situation. I'm not here to hate on anyone specific, but you really must be a spoiled rich asshat to even talk like that. Sorry I come from a lower working class household and you're just so fucking perfect. If you think I'm a world class fuckup, you obviously are very sheltered. There's people who have done worse and worked their way up to being better than I have or will, probably on this site for all I know. Continue with the discussion of the thread, not the fuckups life who created it.

Yeah that college part was probably unnecessary. It just seems like unless you have the cash the student loans just aren't worth it, especially with many college graduates working jobs that have nothing to do with what they went to school for. You were probably smart though and got a legit degree, like engineering or something. We need those people
