Another “what car” thread

I’m doing some research currently because I’m lookin into getting a new vehicle to replace the Prius this fall, I love that car but I took a new job and my commute happens to be 20 miles of the worst maintained freeway in WI in the winter, im talking not plowed until 10am bad. So I’m looking for a more burly and heavier awd or 4wd vehicle with okay gas mileage. I really want a Land Cruiser but the impossibly to find a low mileage one for less than 30k and also the 15 mpg is a turn off. If somebody found a cool JDM rig I would bite at that too

I’m looking at Toyota Rav4’s, highlanders, Honda Element, Pilot, Honda Crosstour, one of those Mazda SUV’s, or a Volvo xc90 or xc70. Subaru isn’t off the table but I have a strong preference toward Honda and Toyota just because of the bulletproof reputation

Tryna keep my price range under 20k but 25k is probably my max

looking ideally for used with under 120k miles, but a new vehicle isn’t off the table if there’s a good deal

what vehicle is best? I got a pretty good list but need more opinions to fine tune what suits my needs best

oh I would consider like an older Tacoma or tundra but I would rather have an suv for easy camping

I was capping but it's hilarious I can still get 20k+ for this bad boy. Someday I'll prob trade it in for a bigger truck.

Lmaoo I took the b8 hard.

the market for them is wild. It’s even more hilarious that 20k is on the cheaper side of used Tacoma’s from that generation currently

Most modern cars are a safe bet. Pilots had transmission issues a few years back, so maybe avoid, but a crv should be solid. People build drag cars with crv manual drivetrains.

A rav4 is a safe buy but toyota tax drives up prices.

CX-5’s are solid cars. Mine’s at 138k miles and been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned.

I’m big anti-Subaru. Had a 2013 forester that burned so much oil I traded it in to go upside down on payments just to get rid of it. It had under 100k when I got rid of it. Subaru puts trash components in any car that isn’t the STI.

Personally I would go tacoma with a bed cap, tundras are absolutely atrocious on gas, my buddy gets 12mpg highway on a good day

I’m anti Subaru tbh, had a forester for a while but they really just start to degrade after a while

can attest to mazda too, my dad used to have a cx9 and that fucker could go anywhere

Yeah its weird how subi went down the shitter in the last decade or so, 20 years ago a subi was the be all end all but now basically every other car company is making a better car.

Honestly. Even seeing like newer outback’s or crosstreks on the road they kinda all sound shitty and like somethin is wrong after a couple years

Subaru owners have some sort of Stockholm syndrome and think transmission or major engine issues are perfectly fine.

20 years ago there was the head gasket issue. Then the oil consumption issue 10 years ago. And they still put the same 5 speed manual (now with a 6th gear) in the wrx, which has to be among the worst performance transmissions ever made.

RAV4 hybrids are really nice, not sure what the market is like for them though. Also the Highlanders of any era are tanks. I really think you should go for the Honda Element and lift it because lifted Elements are funny but also pretty capable rigs.

I have always loved the Element, so much room and the rubber floor is a good touch cuz I destroy interiors with wet skis

Fuck yessss

im more of a 2nd gen fan tho

both are great, ive talked about it before but a few people in my family and homies have high mile third gens that absolutely rip in the snow and have all the shit id ever need. only complaint I have is that they're slow but that doesn't realistically matter.

Or I could get that weird rav4 EV Tesla made for Toyota back in like 2010 that has like a 80 mile range. They only came in FWD tho

My tundra gets me smiles per gallon.

These things tanks though, got like 2 feet of snow over the weekend and this thing tanked through every bit of it. Pulled out some vehicles of snow banks with no issue.

Your buddies got a problem with his truck or his right foot. Tundras don't do great but he should be getting 15-16 combined and pushing 19-20 when road tripping.

get a ski rack or a roof box. stop being a degenerate who tosses skis in your car

Actually I have another friend getting the same results too, early 5.7s aren’t exactly gas sippers

Honestly cx5 might be the valid move, it’s a nice lookin car and hella affordable for one with less than 80k miles

I just bought this exact car (2019 with 30k miles) and I drove it up an unplowed Loveland pass with no issues. Its lowkey got great handling and the repair costs are the cheapest of any auto manufacturer (correct me if this is wrong but I’ve read that a few places), just be warned it’s a 4 cylinder. Idk if that matters to you but it doesn’t to me, def look into it though it’s an unbeatable car for the price

Daaamn valid, yea I have no problem with a 4cyl, I don’t have shit to tow and as long as it’s got okay acceleration I’m cool with it. I literally drive a Prius lmao so it would probably feel fast as fuck to me

Check out cars from Japan, import site and dope asf.

I’m thinking of getting a Toyota hiace, but really dig delicas as well

Oh hell yea! I can flip thru that for days…

I kinda wanna avoid the hassle of US titling a car tho. When my sister imported her accord she couldn’t drive it for almost a month

Just don’t title it.

Nah fr idk how much of a pain it is, but it’s def some more work I’d imagine

Ok so yea i want a 4Runner or Land Cruiser again. I know the gas is bad buuuut I took our work truck through a fat mud hole to take some stuff to the burn pile and had a blast with that. I want a vehicle that can go thru almost anything

older sequoias are beasts and usually a bit cheaper than the 4runner. Plus they last forever and are easy to work on.

For the price 4runners are going nowadays cop a gx 470 instead.

GX/Cruiser is at the top of my list tbh, it’s been my dream car for a miiinute. The gx is just a lil more attainable. I like the Land Cruiser styling more but would b v happy with either

The 4.7 liter? That's what my Tundra has. Even with 237,000 miles it runs butter smooth. Big reason I bought it was the "million mile motor."
