Lol, I can't resist a Subaru hate thread!
I won't defend Subaru's "feature-not-a-bug" decision to spec lower weight engine oil to improve their emission standards, but the solution is just to... add oil between changes. And use a heavier weight oil like 5w30 in the summertime at the expense of slightly worse mileage, if desired. The leaky gasket thing is related to the lower weight oil spec. If online accounts are to be believed, oil consumption seems to be worse for some people more than others even in the same model-year. I have a 2013 Forester too, and I love it despite the oil consumption. No actual problems over the 30k I've put on it so far beyond normal things like a lightbulb swab and a windshield replacement for a crack. But it's my first car, and I'm biased for that reason
. Subarus still have good resale value. And it fits a few bikes on their sides wheels removed, and my field equipment for work.
Good luck on your search!! Keep in mind the cargo space in your picks, for camping.
