An Inconvient Truth

i don't understand what there isnt to believe....a MUCH smaller proportion of scientists do not believe that global warming is a man-made phenomenon as opposed to those who do believe that we are causing it...

its simple logic, really....all scientists, no matter what their stance on global warming, agree on the following things:

1) The Earth's temperature is rising

2) The Greenhouse effect is real (and is also consequently what keeps our planet inhabitable)

3) CO2 is a greenhouse gas

4) Mankind has increased the Earth's CO2 emissions by an absolutely ridiculous amount

if you understand the greenhouse effect, you would know that greenhouse gases work much like greenhouse windows in that they allow radiation from the sun to pass through them, but do not allow the heat to pass back through them into space.

therefore, if mankind has caused such a massive increase in CO2, and CO2 is a greenhouse gas, AND the earth's temperature is rising, somebody please explain to me how this means that global warming is an entirely natural occurence!

for the record, i have researched this issue. my senior project consisted of a 30 page research paper as well as a 40 minute long powerpoint presentation on global warming. i have read over 10 books on the subject, have considered all possibilities (some of which are very interesting), and have weighed all the facts.

if you don't believe in global warming or you dont think that human's are playing a significant role in it, you simply haven't researched anything.

i'll try to find my research paper and post it -

i agree, we really do have no idea what the climate will be. however, we do know that the northern polar ice cap is melting at 53 CUBIC MILES every year, and we DO know that this is a faster rate than has ever happened before. and we DO know that by 2100, there will BE NO POLAR ICE CAPS, which will raise sea level by over 200 feet.

and you are correct, we have almost never been right with weather forecasts. however, predicting the next day's weather is a hell of alot harder than predicting the next century's. analogy: you buy stock in a company that has developed a cure for cancer. however, it will take 10 years for an efficient way of implementing it to be developed. over the next ten years, you expect the value of their stock to grow. however, the stock's value doesnt rise in price everyday - it might go down a dollar oen day, then jump up $2 the next day. there are a ton of other variables (like the company's other products, actions of other investors, global economy, etc.). however, you KNOW that in 10 years their stock will be worth alot more than what you bought it for.

Why do you people insist on taking my words and completely butchering them so that they make you look like a smart person? Look, everything you just listed as scientists agree on I said is is happening. You people are constantly taking my arguments and mutating them into your own favor, it's really getting old.

For the fifth time, YES I say again, YES, I agree global warming is happening, but not to the degree we make it out to be. Thus I am challenging the legitimancy of Al Gore's film based on absolute theory and not factual basis.

Now, my point is that there could be a natural cycle happening at this very moment too. The earth has been relatively cold for the past thousand years or so, based on what we predict/know.

I know exactly what the greenhouse effect is and what human deposition of C02 is. There is no need to explain this to me.

somebody please explain to me how this means that global warming is an entirely natural occurence!

You are in the wrong argument. I NEVER stated it was a complete natural occurance.

Trust me, I have done just as much research as you, if not more. It is my own opinion and you can't prove anything against it, and neither can any scientist. It is fact that we cannot predict the climate precisely and we do not know the past weather of the earth within reason.

Again I repeat, there is no way of absolutely knowing that this will happen. For all we know the world could experience an orbit shift and slightly cool down. Ok wow rates are cool, but rates do NOT remain the same. Especially when we are talking about nature. Natural rates are the most inconsistant things on this planet.

i didnt mean to butcher your words...i was actually responding to someone elses comment when i quoted yours, so i'm sorry. i am, however, respectfully disagreeing with you on the fact that global warming is as bad as we make it out to be. sure, some of it may have to do with natural occurences, but the degree to which it is happening (and it IS happening at a very extreme degree) is nowhere close to what a natural cycle would cause.

i'd also like to say that while we have no way of telling what the rate at which the climate changed over long periods of time, we CAN tell what the CO2 concentration levels were....and right now they are nearly triple what they were during the last ice age. i dont understand....are you saying that the CO2 increases have no impact on global warming? or are you just saying that the earth's natural cycle is occuring faster than the manmade problems are....

i dont think you can intelligently deny that man's increase in CO2 emissions hasnt done anything to the climate. i'm not saying you are, but i think that if you look at the research and the various comparisons between now and 150 years ago, you would realize that the changes are happening way to fast for the problem to be anything but artificial.

After the last ice age, we are guessing the world heated up just a tiny tiny bit slower than what it is now. This is only a guess though and can not be accurately determined.

No I agree with the greenhouse effect, as I previously stated. I don't think you are quite getting my argument.

I will say it one more time, I know it's confusing because I agree and disagree on many related things but, I belive that teh greenhouse effect is definately effected by humans. Whether they are the complete aspect or not is to be eternally debated. What I do not agree on is that scientific research determining what the effects will be hundereds of years from now. Nature has a way of balancing itself out. Whether that leads to our extinction or not, we cannot kill the earth. There is no possible way we as humans have the power to stop all life on earth. We do, indeed, have the power to destroy human life, but not all life.

it was a great film. i saw it last night. it was extremlry interesting and i highly recommend everyone to see it

yes we can. global temperature IS directly tied to the level of CO2 in the atmosphere. that means that as CO2 levels rise and fall temperature rises and falls respectively. humans are largely increasing the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere which is undisputable. therefore if people are causing CO2 levels to go up and increased CO2 levels lead to increasing global temperature humans ARE contributing to global warming.
