Great post.
I haven't read the comics, but anyone whose chief criticism of the show is that it doesn't follow the comics, well....I dunno. Stupid?
Also, I think the human interactions are the most natural thing to focus on in a zombie apocalypse, and I applaud the author, screenplay writer/editor and so on for really making the relationships at the heart of the gore/horror/zombiemadness the focal and most interesting aspect of the whole shibang....
It forces us to consider which pieces of human nature really manifest when all of our pretenses and former labels/jobs/statuses mean fuck all. It's ultimate parity and survival of the fittest. Best example is how the slight yeller feller (racism?!) really thrives as he's good with direction, timeliness, and general awareness—because he's a pizza delivery guy!, hahaha. Maybe a little heavy-handed, but the idea that society and civilization would be stood on its ear is fun. It also forces us to consider what we would do ourselves in any given situation. And it provides a peek at how "institutions" (like the "law").
Say what you want, but it's more ambitious, high-minded, and I'd argue "smarter" than the majority of shows on tv. It's better than me sitting in a dark room watching another fucking Seinfeld re-run anyway...
