1971 Harmony Folk, Sapele Back and Sides, Spruce Top, recently had neck reset, refret, new nut and saddle done by myself, *In Progress* Custom Les Paul/Strat hybrid. 2" Honduran Mahagony body with bookmatched AAA Koa top and back, set Honduran Mahonany Neck with Ebony Fingerboard. Double bound. Neck Binding. Tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece. Two Tone pots, Two Volume Pots, Coil Tapping. Recessed Output Jack. *In Progress* European Maple, Englemann Spruce Jazz Hollowbody with sound hole based on 1930's Gibson rather than traditional 'F Holes'. 5 Piece AAA Maple Neck. Ebony Fingerboard, and tailpiece. Double Bound, Neck Binding.

It's 30 years old or something like that. a Raven hollowbody, I'm not sure what the exact model is. I have a decently nice Ibanez acoustic/electric at home, but there isn't nearly enough action on it. Gotta take it to the shop this summer. I also have a Samick electric(shitty Gibson factory sub-brand) from 8 years ago. The guitar I put the pic of is the only one in my dorm, the others are at home. I also have been playing the violin for 14 years...but this is a guitar thread haha but I can guarantee for my own ego's sake that my violin is nicer than any of your guitars
 
A few changes:

-took off pick guard and pickup switch ring

-rewired

-new pots/caps

-replaced stock nut with bone nut

-replaced stock Epiphone pickups with Gibson humbuckers

It sounds better than most Gibson LPs I've played. And I'm sure if I didn't have a blown out piece of shit amp, it would sound even better.

I like, Ive always wondered how an Epi compares to Gibson. I'd give anything for a black Les Paul Custom or a Les Paul Black Beauty. The Jackson I have now is alright but i hate how off balance it is when standing up, I'd rather trade it in for a red Mockingbird or Epi Les Paul.

Nice job. What pickups you using? I'dve gone with '69 strat pickup in bridge and Danelectro lipstick in neck. Would sound amazing.
 
"Vintage Vibes" - custom wound ones from a guy in Hood River. I put in a 4 way switch too so I could get both pickups in series and in parallel.
 
They have the same wood quality, it's just that the Epiphones are outsourced to lower-payed Koreans. As long as you know the basics of fixing up a guitar, an Epiphone can easily surpass the quality of a Gibson. I can't tell you how many souped up Epiphones I've played that have sounded just as good if not better than modern Gibsons.

I wouldn't say it is as nice as the vintage Gibsons, however. Ever since Gibson got sold (and are now assembled by furniture builders), the quality of their guitars has gone waaaay downhill. Modern Gibsons are shit by comparison.
 
first, just have to say that this is the sceniest ns thread i've seen to date. still not enough though, can get better!second, i have a breedlove as well, it's amazing!third, hate on me but i dont like fenders... their tone is great, but not versatile enough. other good guitars can pull off the same thing that fenders can, among other stuff.fourth, guitar is overrated methinks.
 
not versatile enough? I guess that's a matter of personal opinion, but I have yet to encounter any problems with that. I think both teles and strats are very versatile (not to mention jazzmasters, jaguars, duo-sonics, squier '51's, etc).

as far as epi vs. gibson, a lot of the difference is quality control. gibsons are more consistent. other than that, the fit and finish is better and the wood may be more expensive. but if you go to a shop and try out epiphones in person and find a really nice one, they can be a great instrument.
 
I think Fender makes some of the most versatile guitars out of any other large-scale guitar corporation.
 
Hot damn a guitar an amp and a fuzz is all you need to get any tone you need. Tele's have the sweetest tone EVAH, but I like the strats cause when feedback hits, its nice to be able to turn that into your advantage, but tone ain't as good. alas.

Epi sucks compared to gibson. anyone with an amp knows why the difference is 600 between the standards. I find gibsons, minus the ES series and the SG, to be far too thick. With fenders, you can adjust the thickness or thinness of the tone alot more than with an LP. The only good Epi's are their acoustics and their upper class LP knockoffs.
 
my sg has TONS of tele twang

and i have played a few SICK epiphones, that go for around $500, that have really blown my mind.

for instance the Les Paul ULTRA II is exceptional. I was blown away. To get a gibson to sound like that, it's going to be at least 1500, or you would have to go for a T5 or equivalent, plus the stereo adapter.

 
I usually don't like ibanez, but when I picked this up I fell in love with the sound. Recording my demo with it this summer.

I got an Epi Goth Les Paul a few years ago, it had cheap pickups and hardware, but had a real fast neck and smooth as hell frets. Then when I had enough money I bought a new gibson SG standard, which was great for awhile. Then I upgraded my Epi Paul with a Dimarzio Evo in bridge and a PAF Joe in neck and beefed up the hardware, knobs, and wiring, and the thing is a monster. Such hot output, it sounds great for everything except country. Now I have difficulty switching back to my Gibson, which has gone through alot, a cracked headstock and broken tuning knob (gibson tuners suck)
Get an Epiphone and put new pups in it and your golden

Those EVH replicas were going for 15 to 20k new. As far as the Fender argument goes, Ive never really been a fan of their guitars mainly since they sound WAY too tinny for my style.
Dont get me started on Fender amps either...their tubes are decent, but the rest of the lineup is complete trash as far as i'm concerned. I've yet to see a good solid state or valve amp come from them.

im liking the jazz master up there, thats my dream guitar. a beat up jazz master in sunburst with a nice faded rosewood fretboard.
 
The inlays on my guitar are awesome... This pic doesnt give it enough credit and too lazy to take real pics. Its neck thru which means the neck and boddy are the same peice of wood. Havnt played in forever though

lollerskates! Fender tube amps are THE standard. Lots of guys (Cream for example) used to record (and people still do) on dimed Champs. Twin Reverbs dominate for the clean sound crowd - chicken pickin, lap steel, etc. Not to mention the Blues Junior, which is an unbelieveable amp, and I got mine for $350.

I have a fender solid state.

my rig consists of

Line 6 X3 Live-->FX loop of Fender FM120r

all i need is amplification without tone coloration, and out of all the amps that i tried, tube and transistor, the fender was in the top 3 for truest tone. The other two options were an Atomic amp, which is basically a power amp attached to a speaker, designed for processors or other preamps, and a 4x12 blues deville.

i found the solid state fender for 180 on ebay a few weeks after, and seeing as i am not playing any stadiums at the moment, the amp performs perfectly. it actually disperses pretty well.
