Alright NS. Who has the nicest guitar?

tube help needed!

if anybody has replaced the tubes in their amps THEMSELVES, including biasing the amp, could they explain exactly how its done? I live quite far from anybody I trust with my amps, and I need to replace the preamp driver tube and all four power tubes (6L6s) in both amps. buying matched sets of tubes is expensive enough without messing my amps up completely or killing myself. could someone explain the process to me?

I like this thread.

Slightly OT:

Thinking about picking up an electric, and I REALLY want a strat because they're one of the most iconic guitars of the past 60 years, and Gilmour and Hendrix both played them so they seem pretty rad (writing this I realize how dumb I sound, buying something based off who plays it, but rest assured I WILL test drive one before I buy it, as well as others).

However, the American Strat is slightly out of my price range at 1200-1300, although the Highway One Strat is a nice 700, which is more appropriate for me.

SO. NS guitarists, what are your opinions on said guitar? Any other information is also appreciated.

Greatest influences are (in order from greatest to least): David Gilmour, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), and Hendrix.

No pics but I have a really nice epiphany les Paul standard in cherry burst. It has a different flame, weighs more and has different hardware that the regular standards. And I bought it new so it's not like it was changed by somebody else and they sold it. Plus it cost 100 more than any other standard.

Fender blues junior 15w tube amp. Great tone and loud enough for small gigs, yet small enough for my house.

Dunlop cry baby classic reissue, MXR distortion+, MXR stereo chorus.

I've got an Ovation Idea Acoustic, first guitar with a built in MP3/Recording Device. I've also got an Epiphone Les Paul Chameleon, changes colours from green/blue/purple when you look at it in different directions.

kinda lame to post here with no guitar and no guitar skills, but i thought i'd post this here because it'd be appreciated, and its the only way i know of to show off my buddy's killer PRS. he's a talented musician

Look into the Classic Player 50s/60s strats. Mexi-made with American quality for $700. Even better, look for a MIJ Strat on Ebay.

Other than that, I'd suggest you just sack up the extra $300 and buy an American Standard if it fits your hands right (you can definitely get them for less than $1300).

don't be stupid. It's REALLY easy to die if you honestly don't know what you're doing, and I can guarantee you, nobody on NS does either.

Kid's not gonna be able to afford a golden era MIJ strat. There's no point if it's not an '82-89, so just go with the Mexican. Classic 60's is FANTASTIC - I own a sunburst and it's all i ever need, or go with the 50's which is a little more country twang.
Or if you can find one and you don't want a strat, go for the SG classic - It's a remake of the SG Special with P90's, and it sounds amazing for an SG. I think it retails $800, so you'll catch it cheap if you do. Fender CP strats retail $700

for about a year i had a fender hot rod deluxe 40w tube amp... on 12, the windows of my house would rattle and you could hear it all around my block... i wore ear plugs and fucked with my neighbors

changing tubes / bias will not kill you.

to change tubes, you pull the old ones out and put new ones in.

bias, there should be bias pots, multimeters are your friend here

sorry for dub post but in total ive got:

-Gibson Les Paul Menace (electric)

-Epiphone SG-400 Goth (electric)

-ESP LTD B-154 DX (bass)

-Fender FM-52E (mandolin)

-Martin B18 (acoustic)

-LaPatrie Étude (classical)

youre a fuckin dumbass. this is why i never go on ns anymore, you kids judge everything before you know what the fuck you're talking about. i took this video a long time ago and only recently put it up and its not even close to my playing ability. i've been taking lessons for 1.5 years and i can garuntee i can play 10 times better than you. i practice 2-3 hours a day just cause i have nothing better to do. that video was recorded with a shitty digital camera and the reason i used my tube amp is because i gave my other practice amp to my friend. please. shut the fuck up.

Why's everyone bashing on tube amps? Tubes fuckin rock, after playing through several Marshall valve amps, (mainly their new valve half stack) I dont ever want to go back to solid state again.

I'm trying to sell my Jackson though, which was previously posted in this thread. I'm going to replace it with an Epiphone Les Paul Custom or an Epiphone Black Beauty.

I am very excited to pick up an Epiphone Wildkat one day next week! I'm pretty much sold on it, its a good price, has good hardware (and its gorgeous.)

2 alnico V-P09 Pickups (same pickups as the Casino)

Bigsby Classic Tremolo (same as most gretsch hollowbodies)

Maple neck, mahogany body and a maple face

acheter-epiphone-wildkat-archtops.jpg

nobody is bashing tube amps, they just sound like ass when they're so loud and you have to play with the volume under 2. Tubes are great because of the way they sound when they're being pushed, not barely active.

hence, its retarded to play anything over 5w for bedroom use.

Wooo I'm trying to cut back on my anger, so I won't reply with a large amount of text. Why would you put up the video if it wasn't representative of your abilities now? If you're asking a question, you should give us uptodate credentials to justify your purchase. Otherwise, the video tells us you suck. If it ain't you now, don't use it.
And as for your comment about my ability -
Really? You've been playing for 1.5 years??? I'M A FUCKING GUITAR MAJOR IN UNIVERSITY - I'VE BEEN PLAYING FOR 6 YEARS YOU DUMBFUCK.
Oh wow you play for 2-3 hours a day? FUCKING AMAZING. Now that you can play some shitty Pink Floyd you think you can hang with the big boys? Try memorizing some Wes Montgomery and we'll see how fucking good you think you are. Fucking high schoolers think you're the shit. I played in 3 different bands this year including solo projects. I record for my Finals. You film shitty fucked up solos on youtube and you think you're the shit? Go fuck yourself. You don't deserve my help. Go spend $1000 dollars on pickups so you can fuck up some more RHYTHM guitar on a Pink Floyd song. Jesus fuck.

^ jeez give the kid a break, you had to start sometime too didnt you? he never said he had been playing for 1.5 years, just said he'd been taking lessons for that long. as for your other comment, if you call that help, i wouldnt want to take lessons from you in the future; telling someone that no matter how hard they try they're still going to suck isnt a very good way to make money

He's right, the only way to be good at guitar is to go to college for it, and you aren't allowed to have nice gear if you don't.

Having fun with it is fucking stupid, if you don't study music and play wes Montgomery you should kill yourself.

Glad to see we see eye to eye on the issue Arabian......

No, wait, you're a self righteous, stereotypical, asshole music student.

thats a large amount of text. also, just because your a guitar major in "university" doesn't mean shit, I know plenty of music majors who aren't all that skilled in their instrument. and 6 years, woopdeefuckindoo, if were claiming here in caps, IVE BEEN PLAYING FOR 8 YEARS AND HAVE WON SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY JAZZ GEETAR AT UMASS. LOUUUD NOISES.

the only difference? Im not shittin on the little guy. give him a break. jazz musicians are all stuck up assholes, and I know because Ive studied with plenty, and if you're a guitarist and cant play over Giant Steps then you suck according to em.

to the kid he was pooing on, pink floyds the shit, your pickups are nice, keep playing bro. rock guitar is more fun anyway.

and there's that elitist feeling again, that you think you're so much better than everyone else and your style of music is absolutey the best and most technical.

You're totally right. The point of this was to build myself up because I can play Jazz and go to school for it. That was totally the point. Not that you were being a highschool douche and claiming you were better than me, therefore my opinion was invalid. Totally not the point. In fact, I was so totally wrong about my post, that you shouldn't get better. Go ahead and get the 300 dollar pickups and a marshall stack. I don't give a shit. You have totally made me feel inadequate because you can play the rhythm part of TIme and a portion of the solo. You have totally and utterly destroyed my attempt to make myself credible with your amazing playing. I value you, and your opinion far more than my own because of your setup and your skills? 1.5 years? You must be a virtuoso, because you can hear it in your playing.
And you're right. I play jazz. I play blues too. I can also do some mean bluegrass. But no, i'd say you were more technical. F#m to A? impossible. Mindblown. You can almost do a barre chord? wow. I was born with nubs for hands, you see.
Really. Don't practice. You don't need to. All you need for a good tone is 5+ pedals, an a compression box, and new pickups.
I'm sorry about my post. I was just jealous.

No, you're right. Telling someone to get better to improve their tone rather than spending 300 dollars on pickups is not the right thing to do.
But remember, he DID call me out for not being as good as him, because he has 1.5 years under his belt.....

I honestly suggest you reread the post I was replying to. Dave Gilmour is what got me into guitar. The fact that he's calling people out on the internet after 1.5 years of playing is what set me off.

You say David Gilmour is what got you into playing guitar, yet you call one of his best pieces "some shitty pink floyd song," please. Also, find where I said Ive been playing guitar for 1.5 years. Exactly, you can't. I said I've been taking lessons for 1.5 years. I've been playing viola for 9 years now, piano for 5, and guitar for 3 so I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to music. I don't play because it's difficult, I play because it's what I love. And I don't play for anyone but myself. Have a good day.

Great so you call me a fucking dumbass because you A) mislead with that video, and B) didn't like that I responded to that video of you sucking by telling you to get better, even though you know that video sucks. You responded by being a dick and calling out my playing ability because you've taken LESSONS? Now, I could see where you could call me a pretentious douchebag for stating my playing history (school, etc). And then you call me an elitist? hahah k. Also, where in my original rant post can you find that I only play jazz and that's my area of expertise and that I feel Jazz is most technical? Also, find out where in my original post to your pickup question I displayed hostility.
Now find suck my dick. Lessons automatically don't make you good. And I can tell by your attitude that you really aren't that great. Compensation and whatnot.

You're worse than I thought....

All he did was post a video, and I suppose it was your place as an arrogant jazz guitar player to call him a stupid kid that doesn't deserve the gear he has.

Damn near every post I've seen from you has been extremely negative and unproductive..

And here's your queue, keep on diggin your hole.

Check his reply to my first post. Told him to get better, not spend his money on pickups, because he sucked in the video. Read again.

"try playing some Wes Montgomery, then well see how good you think you are." If that doesn't count for being elitist, you're dumber than I thought. And I never said that jazz was your expertise, I said you think your style of music is absolutely the hardest. Also, I would think telling me I suck because of an old video that was only posted in the first place TO SHOW MY GEAR would be a form of hostility. How about you actually read the fucking post before you tear it apart.

Btw, you suck at comprehending- there's my advice to you (which is just as good as your "advice").

"i've been taking lessons for 1.5 years and i can garuntee i can play 10 times better than you. i practice 2-3 hours a day just cause i have nothing better to do" - elite egotistical douche?
"you think you're so much better than everyone else and your style of music is absolutey the best and most technical. " - implying jazz.
His post was obviously in response to your statement: "im thinking of swaping out the pickups for some seymour duncan slash alnico II pro's."
After which you posted the video.
And then he told you to practice moar, then you posted this:
"youre a fuckin dumbass. this is why i never go on ns anymore, you kids judge everything before you know what the fuck you're talking about."
GTFO troll.
