After dark review

Ahhh yes I am a cock-fiend fanboy for 16mm, so I hear what you are saying. I agree the Level 1 urban shots are always more "colorful" you could say. After looking at some of the BC shots I read what you are typing.

IN MY OPINION, I really wasn't a fan. I like the Level 1 movies with up beat music, like in Refresh. This stuff kind of put me to sleep.

That being said, the movie had a great flow. The music transitioned perfectly and gave off the same vibe, as well as matching the "feel" of the shots.

Unfortunately, I really didn't get stoked on this film. Don't get me wrong the skiing was great, BUT it just had a really boring vibe. I applaud L1 for trying to switch it up and delivering a really "themed" movie but IMO it didn't work. Lets go back to the refresh days please...

Going back to realtime, I felt the same way. There's almost a pixelated look to some of the shots. Not a major distraction or negative to me, but I definitely see what you mean.

i thought the chris logan/alex bellemare segs was one of the best in a while from any production company. they also used one of my favorite mos def songs. other than that however i agree with a lot of what people have said, kinda gloomy and underwhelming. id still say its worth the 9.99 on itunes tho

i thought after dark was sick. I wasnt too impressed with the soundtrack but the skiing and cinema was amazing. There wasnt one segment that was boring and Alex Bellemare fucking killed it. People need to stop hating

parker white's segment was really good. on par with ahmets opener from eye trip. other standouts were hornbeck, logan and ahmet, but ahmets song sucked. stoked on some of those songs and really really not stoked on others.

That elbow rail to chunky overside wooden step tranny is the sickest urban spot of the year I think, especially the way Ahmet takes it.

@hollygrove

I totally agree with what you're saying about style, but would say that pbp is strait ski porn: it's just banger after banger. its feels like an old-school ski-films style that is kind of out dated. The ski talent is unreal, but it lacks a connection to the audience that companies like Stept and Level 1 have. I think all of the films that I have seen so far this year are good and at least worth buying on Itunes, but After Dark is the only one I can see myself watching over and over again all year long.

I loved the music because it differentiated each part while maintaining cohesiveness throughout the final product. Plus, the Kinks are my all time favorite, and I will fight anyone who does not like or, at least, respect them. I'm super cereal, I'll fight you.

logan and bellmares parts were so sick but i think that the song choices really sucked. the guys that did midnight rider sucked really bad, and twall and friends part? shit, total shit. harlaut was in there for 11 seconds (i counted)

This movie was not the best... horrible soundtrack and when it was over I was like wait... there isnt more? no flow to the movie... just a bunch of different parts put together... like at one point I was watching war film on Ahmets part and then on another part I am watching parker white walk down an empty street... I know that Level 1 put a lot of work into this film and I realize this... but after watching grand bizzare and one for the road I think my expectations were just to high.

this 1000 times over. its pretty much just assumed when i click on a video link that i will be pressing mute

Skiing was top notch. Some real creative stuff in there. But as people have said before me..The sound track just didnt cut it. And before i get the "you have no taste in music blah blah blah" The choices just wern't my cup of tea. That was pretty unfortunate for me. When i watch a seggy or an edit the song choice is half of the overall presentation for me and if I dont like the song I really dont enjoy the edit as much. Stept's Weight had a really awesome soundtrack. Liked almost single song they used. And i have watched that movie at least 10 times in the past week. After Dark..well I probably wont.

So basically what I'm getting is that you guys didn't like it because all the parts Wallisch were in didn't have a hiphop/thug/gangster song..

opinions on Delorme's part? IMO hes one of the styleist skiers out there. his eye trip part was better tho

ok this is all what I think. Personally the soundtrack compared to eye trip and refresh was just not good. The skiing was good but I don't care how good the skiing is. When the songs are all terrible I just can not get a good vibe.

obviously, musical taste is personal and subjective, but can someone who hated the soundtrack be more specific? What didn't you like?

I don't get it. I thought it was diverse and appropriate. When I see generic negative responses like the above, I can't help but assume the people saying as much have a really limited idea about what constitutes good music and like what's been spoonfed to them through this website and ski movies/edits.

To clarify, I'm not saying that people who disliked it automatically have bad taste, but when there's nothing to back it up, it comes across as ignorant and closeminded.

For me, I shit myself when Dead End Street started, and I thought it fit Parker and the seg perfect. I felt like in many cases the choices were thoughtful, surprising, and fun. I'm personally grateful that it was a bit of a switch up from what they've done in the past music wise. With that, I thought the cover for Wiley's seg, the Cali P, or similar reggae track for AD, and ahmet's songs were misses.

the first 3 segments (dead end street, mos def and al green) were great and then the music just went seriously downhill from there. crappy rock, even crappier electro, that weird rap/electro song that kept saying friends, and worst of all terrible jahbless reggae bullshit. delorme consistently has the best skiing to the worst choice in music. sound tracks dont have to be well balanced, they just have to be good music. a lot of skateboard movies get it right with soundtracks of mostly classic rock and rap.

good soundtrack can make a mediocre movie into a good movie, and unfortunately a bad soundtrack can have the opposite affect on a good movie

this. I wasn't as impressed with Eye Trip compared to Refresh, then I watched it more and I realized how much better it is. Same with After Dark.

so after watching for a second time I do not think it is as bad. The songs arn't great but I guess i like them more now than before.

So I re watched it today this time my computer actually played the movie normally and with sound and i have to say...it was a good film. The soundtrack was fine except that one "friends' song which just kind of made me laugh when i heard it. I loved the theme and the only thing i noticed that could have been better was a couple of the trannys into different parts and the abrupt ending. but ohhh no god forbid i dont like 4 seconds haha. All in all I was happy with it and still not understanding where all the hate is coming from.

Music aside (and its hard to put it aside since its such a big part of a movie) After Dark was sick.

I saw it at IF3 and just downloaded it off iTunes and rewatched. I thought the first time I saw it I may have jumped to a conclusion about the soundtrack because of the beverages I had drank that night, but watching it stone sober, they were pretty accurate. Did not get me stoked.

The skiing was so sick the second time I watch it. So much style, amazing cinematography and very creative urban. Good mix between urban, backcountry and the infamous level 1 park shoots. The Sun Valley jump might somehow be even bigger this year than it was last.

Parker White and Ahmet had rediculous sections. Would have liked to have seen more of Wallisch but I guess he got injured. The stuff he was in was pretty tight. Houle and Gagnier had a banger segment, pretty much all urban. They've still got it. I liked Rainville's section, especially the gopro pillow line.

Anyways, despite the music, I would still encourage people to buy the movie and support level 1.

The theme of the movie is a "dream". Every part was one in its own(editing, music, stlye, etc). Kinda like how dreams are, there are very random and can switch scenes on the dot, but still flow in the big picture of things. The dream ends when ahmet wakes up at the very end. Listen to the credits song also.

That whats I got out of it, it more of a peice of art than a movie.

very sick.

I thought the movie was awesome, you have to watch it multiple times thought to get everything out of it. There are just so many good shots that it can take a while to notice all them especially in the Russia segment. Also I'm just going to run through the songs and try to defend them since I thought the soundtrack was brilliant, it was so nice to watch a movie where the music was so diverse and unique.

The first song for the intro was good I think, it got me really pumped up with how rugged it was.

Second song in P. Whites seggy was spot on in my opinion, when I heard it I thought it sounded 100% like a song Parker would ski to.

Third song during Chris Logan and Alex Bellimare's segment was decent, nothing mind boggling but still good.

Song during Mike Hornbecks segment was spot on too, it had a good mellow vibe to it and fit Mike's skiing for sure. It is also a huge improvement over the song that was in his segment in eye trip.

I think the song in the Japan segment did not really fit but it was a good song none the less. I just don't enjoy listening to a guy tell me how much he drank last night over and over.

The song during sun valley fit well too I think, just made the segment feel artsy which I personally think fits the segment seeing as the jump looked so damn good along with the tricks being thrown on it.

Song during JF's and Charles Gangiers segment didn't really make or break the film for me, it as good but not mind blowing. I think it was a bit too much like JF's segment in eye trip.

I liked the song in Wiley's segment, just made me feel happy which fits with Wiley's skiing style. It just gets me stoked.

The song during the Russia segment was awesome in my opinion, it really made the movie feel a bit more exciting and different with all the fiddle.

Song in Wiley's part was mediocre, there is a lot of good reggae out there I just don't think that is a good reggae song.

Song in Ian and Logan's segment was good, its nice to hear some more electronic/alternative songs in movies, it also really fits Ian's style since it did have a bit of a "goofy" feel. Also I was stoked that Ian had a part in the film.

I'm just gonna skip the song in Phil's segment, don't really know how I feel about it.

The song in TWalls, Josh etc segment was stupid. That's all I'm going to say.

The song In Delorme's segment was awesome in my opinion, it had a good beat too it and fit in well.

I honestly don't understand all the hate on the song in Ahmet's part, I thought it really fit in with his skiing style being harsh and aggressive. I also liked how the song didn't make Ahmet seem like a skier trying to be thug or anything lime in Eye Trip, just made him seem like a skier.

The last song was a good closer even though the movie ended pretty abruptly, it reminded me of something that voleurz would use.

If you guys are going to hate on the soundtrack at least explain yourselves or else most people are going to assume that you didn't like it because it wasn't all rap/ electronic and dubstep. Also remember that you did not like it because that is not your taste in music not because the soundtrack was crap. I liked it because it fits into my taste of music, I think that a good deal (not all) of the songs in other ski movies are crap, especially PBP films but that is just an opinion.

SPARKNOTES: I thought the soundtrack was good in my opinion, if you didn't like the soundtrack then explain yourselves and remember that that is you opinion, not a fact.

T24.....the song is Too much too DREAM last night....it fit perfectly as in too much snow=a dream come true.

the triple backflip was sick but i think his eye trip segment was better though. but the nollie frontflip thing he did at a park shoot was sooo sick

yah, i really like how is style is different tehn everybody elses. he doesnt afterbang but damn does it look good. i really liked the jump line with the switch 3s, flowed so well.

This. I liked the soundtrack and the whole movie in general. I don't know why everyone is hating on it so much it was pretty damn sick

I feel like he had a bit more style in the back country in eye trip but he killed it at the park shoots this year, And does any one know the name if the songs in Logan/bellimares segment

I felt the soundtrack was pretty good, I especially liked the Bellemare/Logan song, Parker's song, Japan song( everyone is hating on it, I liked how raw it was. I HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK LAST NIGHT, TOO MUCH TO DRINK) I don't remember many of the others, but I am just VERY stoked that I get to wake up every day I can and watch After Dark on my 45 inch tv in my Level 1 T. Great movie

This is a movie you have to watch a few times to like it. I've found that there's a lot going on between the story line, different music, brilliant filming/editing, and of course stellar skiing to make a call after watching it once or twice. I still don't even have a full feel for it after watching it three times today (not including earlier views from this week). It has grown on me immensely since I first watched it and if you listen to each song and check out the skiing and pay attention to the story line, it becomes apparent that Level 1 spent an incredible amount of time picking out those tracks. I commend them and cannot wait to watch Parker and Rainville's segments (both have great skiing/music and are currently my favorite).
