According to Steven Hawking....

There is no God, or creator. Before the big bang occurred, time did not exist. Therefor, there was no time for anyone or anything to exist... Very interesting, thought?

-What if there are parallel universes and god just didn't create ours??

just trying to start discussion in summer NSG so no hating pleeeaaase.

trying to start a legit debate in summer nsg will be hard, it is only a matter of time before shit takes a turn for the worst....

This has been freaking me out for the last few months. Try thinking about this:

"Our universe might be really, really big — but finite. Or it might be infinitely big.

Both cases, says physicist Brian Greene, are possibilities, but if the latter is true, so is another posit: There are only so many ways matter can arrange itself within that infinite universe. Eventually, matter has to repeat itself and arrange itself in similar ways. So if the universe is infinitely large, it is also home to infinite parallel universes.

Does that sound confusing? Try this:

Think of the universe like a deck of cards.

"Now, if you shuffle that deck, there's just so many orderings that can happen," Greene says. "If you shuffle that deck enough times, the orders will have to repeat. Similarly, with an infinite universe and only a finite number of complexions of matter, the way in which matter arranges itself has to repeat."

Greene, the author of The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos, tackles the existence of multiple universes in his latest book, The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos.

Recent discoveries in physics and astronomy, he says, point to the idea that our universe may be one of many universes populating a grander multiverse.

"You almost can't avoid having some version of the multiverse in your studies if you push deeply enough in the mathematical descriptions of the physical universe," he says. "There are many of us thinking of one version of parallel universe theory or another. If it's all a lot of nonsense, then it's a lot of wasted effort going into this far-out idea. But if this idea is correct, it is a fantastic upheaval in our understanding.""

TLDR - if the universe is infinite, as mathematical models suggest, then somewhere out there, there is a planet that looks very very similar to Earth, with a person somewhere on its surface who looks very much like you reading an internet forum that looks very much like this one.......

But seriously, I watched the show and it really made my head want to explode.

I love the elegant universe, fantastic book. I'll have to pick up his new one and give it a read

this kind of reminds me of that MIB movie ending with the marbles....

If we came from a parallel universe we still came from something.

I would need to eat more lsd to understand everything he says though. Interesting concepts. Don't fully understand them all enough to agree or disagree with some.

as i started thinking about this more, i dug myself into an even more complex hole:

at first, it seemed absurd to me that the universe could be infinite. i mean, how can something go on forever and have no end? that seems so impossible, matter cannot be constantly overflowing for light years and light years and be completely infinate. it seems like matter would have to be constantly in production for something like that to happen. is there a generator of matter that large?

and then i thought about the alternative. the fuck happens if the universe is finite? is there some truman show-esque wall somewhere that limits everything? how does a border form between the matter and the "finite" limits of where the matter ends?

Hm but how do we know what is right and wrong if there was no creator. God gave us rules, but if there is no God... Then who gave us the rules.

If you shuffle the deck an infinite amount of times though, EVERY possible order and combination will happen repeatedly.

Thats an infinite universe, lets discuss a finite one for a minute. What about a boundary then you ask? Well, it could just wrap around in a higher dimension, so eventually you come back to where you start... sort of like whats explained in that "Imagining the 10th dimension" video thats gotten a lot of plays.

ive been thinking this. but then i realized its too complex for my mind, gave up, sat on my ass and watched family guy

The big bang is just a theory you know. I am inclined to disagree with hawking on this one. Assuming you are following the big bang theory then it is entirely true that nobody knows what happened before this catastrophic event or what forces caused it. It could entirely well be due to a godlike figure or even a sophisticated alien life form. All we know is that 14 billion light years away (give or take a few) there is a source of background radiation that we can detect with sophisticated devices. There is very little evidence to say that the explosion and implosion of the universe isn't cyclical

Following the established laws of physics that C or the speed of light is the maximum speed possible under normal circumstances (and only EM waves travel that speed) it is impossible for us to see the "beginning of the universe." Hawking is just being a depressing debbie.

There are alternative theories to this background radiation as well.

I think the more interesting phenomenon happening is that the universe is accelerating rather than slowing down at this point. Assuming this continues earth may someday reach the speed of light and be converted entirely into energy. Again we don't know (infinite energy is required to move a physical object at this speed).

Something that also is eerie about our physical world is that we can create particles out of gamma radiation, that always freaks me out, kind of makes me question dimensions and whatnot.

But if there's an infinite universe, can there not be an infinite number of cards in the deck also? This would mean a repetition wouldn't be guaranteed surely.

i'd compare it more to going off the map in pacman or asteroids.

if you keep going beyond the edge, you will eventually find yourself back on the other side of things, or in this case, the start.

man made god to control other men, man made rules to control other men.

want to take over a country? 1. invade 2. take away their religion 3. take away their language 4. replace with yours 5. profit, cuz you are now more larger/powerful

that is the reason for religion. control.

free thinkers have always been persecuted for being independent. The thoughts that are different than yours, are dangerous

Disagree? Ask Galileo.

try this out... we live in the 4th dimension (the 4th being time). supposedly, when we die we jump to the next dimension, the paranormal. however, just as we can access the dimensions below us (2D, 3D, etc.) the 5th dimensional beings can access ours. completely verifying the existing of the paranormal.

for example: say you're (4D) underwater looking at the surface and a beach ball (5D) lands on the water, you however, being underwater, can only see a small portion of the entire ball. in theory, this is the same way that we see the paranormal, as a small part of their being trapped in a lower dimension.
