if god is all powerful, then you are implying that he has the power to create all things and do all things.

If god could not lift any particular object, than he would not be able to do all things.

therefore, it would be ridiculous to assume that god could not create something that he himself could not lift.
 
im pretty sure the views of creationism INCLUDE the making of stones and burritos, even heavy and hot ones.

actually, in seventh grade or soemthing, we used to have the preists come in during religion class to answer what ever questions. After he was finished answering atlantaski's question of "Can priests maturbate?" somebody else asked that question, and he just stood up there quiet and thinking.
 
i'm not suggesting that it is a reason not believe in god. I just want to see how people answer it; personally i don't believe it can be answered.

this question is erroneous on all counts. Why would he want to create such a stone? As for the burrito, easily solved: wait until it is cool enough to devour.
 
if you want to know about religion the internet is not the place to do it, especially newschoolers.

it's an inherently flawed question, because two opposing truths cannot exist at the same time and be true.

If there is an irresistible wind, an immovable object cannot exist at the same time by logical necessity.

Therefore, God could not create something that he would be unable to move, not because of some short coming on His part, but simply because once you have God, you cannot, logically, have anything that would go against His definition.

Omnipotent means being to do whatever is possible. Making a rock so big that it would challenge the definition of God is inherently impossible, not because of a shortcoming, but because it simply cannot be with our definitions set. God could not create a four sided triangle, because of the definition. This is no short coming, only simple impossibility with set definitions.
 
i just go to church every sunday because my mom tells me too. and i somewhat pay attention. me and my brother usually end up playing cards, hangman, the dot game, or go search the church for food, we occasonally sleep. then get yelled at by our mom. but yeah i dont really know what all to belive i belive that SOMETHINGS out there but i dont know what. and like im sooo scared of dying because i dont want to like just not have a mind or be able to think and have my thoughts like i do now and be a corpse in the ground. but yeah, thats just my thoughts
 
Dude, of course they get pissed at you. No it's not because they believe in faith because they are scared of death, it's because you insulted their religion. There's much more to a belief than being afraid of death but you are too ignorant to realize that and are insulting people with that ignorance.
 
my debate teacher threw this at us one day. he had the people in god sweating like crazy. this is a matter of logic.

1. either god can create the rock, rendering him not allpowerful. thus negating his christian existence

2 or he cannot create the rock, again negating his existence in christian beliefs.

if this problem is imposed on you then likely the person asking you does not believe in the existence of god. it is impossible to prove that god is allpowerful logically.

this question is a matter of faith in that god's existence is impossible for the human mind to comprehend. such as in the bible, man says god created the world in 7 days. except we don't and will never be able to know what 7 days is in god's perspective. it could be millions of years. so if you believe in god, then simply answer that god's existence cannot be comprehended by human. if you don't believe in god then impose this question on any christian because its really fun to see them sweat

my mom's religious and she's liberal, not conservative religious. anyhow, I think it's just like a spiritual thing for some people. She doesn't believe in heaven or hell, but god is just something important for her. I dunno, I can ask her tonight. I'm accepting of religions but I never really got it, either. :P

it simply means that what is IMPOSSIBLE, absolutely impossible because of the very nature of the world and based on defined, concrete and irreversible definition, is simply impossible.

All powerful does not mean do whatever the hell you want, screw logic and forget possibility. It means doing everything that is in fact possible.

God is all powerful, therefore, something that negates this definition cannot exist, logically, at the same time. God cannot do what is against his definition. Likewise, He cannot create a four side triangle, because definition and logic does not allow it, not because all of a sudden he has no power, it simply cannot be done, by anyone, anything, ever, because of the definition of everything.

Your teacher is a dumbass.

since it's god, he could alter what someone sees as logical.

could he make a rock so damn big that the entire ns body builders cult could not budge...no, obviously not, but he could alter what we see are the limits of possibility.

if that doesn't make sense, well, it's probably because there's no all powerful god.
 
but yea if god was infinetely buff, then he could lift anything...consider this

god creates a boulder that is infinity kg's...then he makes another one that is 23 kg's heavy, and places it on top of the origional rock

23 + infinity will still = infinity.

since he's infinity buff, he can calf raise infinity, and you can't make anything bigger than infinity, so he can calf raise anything

power to people if they believe in god and it affects them positivly i just cant take people who force it upon people and causes conflicts because of some stupid story they believe in. You might believe in a book written thousands of years ago and some random guy claiming to be the son of god then supposivley resurecting himself even though we found his tomb with his remains inside. I believe in science and true facts.

and if there truly was a god how would all kinds of different religons be alive today, like do you really think god would just let people pick a religon when only one was right, thats liek a chicken shoot for eternal life of happiness or suffereing

Ahhh, the paradox of the stone...

The traditional conception of God states that he is omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipotent (all-powerful). If he cannot create a stone which he cannot throw, his omniscience comes into question. If he can create a stone which he cannot throw, his omnipotence comes into question. Either way, there is an internal contradiction.

Sheldon, he couldn't make a 4 sided triangle, because the definition of a triangle is three sides and thus three angles.

He could have created a world where no triangles existed, but a triangle will always have three sides...
 
it's a paradox; if he has the power to create a stone so heavy that he can't lift it then he is not allpowerful; conversely if he is powerful enough to lift the unliftable stone then he is not powerful enough to create a stone that is to heavy for him to lift. Saying that god can do anything is invalid in this situation; yeah he may be a great guy and all that stuff. However saying that he is allpowerful is implausible.
 
stop the name dropping, and realize the actual logics involved.

omnipotence is not put into question through the inability to do the impossible. it would be in the case of a failure to do the possible. this is not one of those cases.
 
the whole question revolves around two philisophical views that arose in the 1600's you are either a volunterists or an intellectualist.

the intellectualist's view is that God's salient property is that of reason. What this means is that logic limits God's powers; if it is not logicaly possible, it can't be done. In terms of scientific belief intellectualists held the idea that there is an overarching structure of the universe which is intelligible to humans, and that one could perform a few experiments ot test the knowable laws of nature, and through these experiments conferm a hypothesis as real.

the voluntarists on the other hand the voluntarists believe God's salient property to be his will; if God so wish it, it will be. Typicaly the brits were the volunterists, where as the rest of europe (especialy the french) were intellectualists. With God's will being his most important characteristic he is unlimited in his powers. If God wanted to make a round square you'd better watch out because it'd happen. As for the voluntarists' idea of science, they do not believe that because anything happens one way today it will nessisarily happen the same way tomorrow. Since this is the case voluntarists' exsperiments are never finnished; they are an ongoing process which only relay information about the current state of things--how things are right now. A famous question that arrises from the voluntarists is "if a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?" -- the voluntarist would say that it is possible, becaues God has that power
