2022 Olympics (for the other events) Thread.

Man I know it's the meta on NS to shid on ski racers but these downhill dudes are nuts. How much trust they put in their edges when they're chattering across the ice is nuts

Walter Wallburg, who's never competed in a major competition before, moves to Åre, Sweden and makes friends with the mogul skiing team guys there.

Then he shows up to the Olympics, and takes gold against the Canadian guy that's won like every major mogul competition since 2012.

What a legend!

Walter has been on the World Cup circuit for awhile now, been sweet to watch him rise up in the ranks. Good on him for the medals

During the finals?

many riders take a victory lap if they already have medal placing. No sense in risking an injury if you’ve already given it your all.

Mega props to Max and Mark with gold and bronze respectively.

the Chinese Rider will be one to watch for in the coming years

Dunno how everyone (including the announcers) missed this, but he fell early off one of the first rails. He was 100% going to try and better his score until that happened.

Yea, I just noticed it watching the replay, and it makes more sense.

i know nothing about the luge, but is it normal for there to be this many crashes?? is something up with the course? kinda insane

No not like this. It’s supposed to be a very challenging track with this dragon tail whip thing in there.

See the Ukrainian? The only thing that made that watchable is he seemed to be up immediately and unhurt.

some interesting gear notes in the two articles below when you get to luge skeleton bobsled. The old photos are spectacular of early bob sled. That sport totally started at a bar one night.

Looks like everyone worth watching in snowboard pipe is gonna qualify. I know he’s a prick but amazing that Shaun White is still this good at 35.

all of my money is on Ayumu Hirano for the finals though. I hope he has to do the front triple

Missed the Ski big air final. What were the tricks that won it?

Birk Ruud won it with a switch left triple 19 mute (95.75) and a forward double bio 18 mute. (92)

2nd place Colby had a nosebutter triple 16 japan (91.75) and switch dub 18 cuban (91.25).

3rd place Henrik with switch double bio 18 tweaked safety (90) and nosebutter triple 16 safety (91)

How tf do you even get into ski jumping? I'd assume all of these athletes rip on regular skis too and the broadcast said a bunch of them live in Park City, but like is their in-run even snow? It looks like they ride into the jump on rollers. At least in aerials they're riding in on actual snow?

I feel like if you weren't born into a family of ski jumpers, or live in the vicinity of one of these jumps, then there's like zero chance you'd ever get into it. Maybe a handful of people who were talented skiers sought it out for some reason, and I guess moved to Park City or something? I feel like the in run is that dryslope material? Where does one even buy ski jump skis?

A guy I work with from Sri Lanka asked me if I did bobsled too when I told him I skied and I'm like nah, that's not really something we do as a recreational sport here. Like me and the boys don't hit up the bobsled track after work, mostly cause where do you even find one?

How many sledding facilities are there in the US anyway. PC and maybe leftovers from Lake Placid? Anywhere else?

Olympic sports are for Boujiee people who have the time and money to dedicate themselves to weird ass disciplines like Skeleton. How the fuck do you get yourself into something like that?

I’m from Calgary and knew an olympic ski jumper and a luger(?) growing up. We have facilities and programs for both in the city so makes sense that some people would get into those sports. Idk how anyone in a city without those things would decide to get into them though.

It’s too bad both facilities at Winsport lost funding.

Ski jumping is one of those dying sports, if the athletes aren’t able to continue training, and funding is low, then they’ll struggle to allocate resources.

I don’t know the full story with the Canadian team, but it sounds like they sacrificed a lot to be able to train and compete in the Olympics. It makes for a great story, but it’s a shame that they have to do so much outside of Canada to be able to accomplish it.

get your shit together Calgary, we need new facilities everywhere

Truth! I've seen one pair of ski jumping skis in a ski shop when I was 7 or something - that's it. The jumping ski basically looked like what you would think a fake ski that you use to hang outside your shop should look like! Insanely wide and long to the point of being comical.

I've seen 2-3 jumping venues driving by but never seen anyone actually jump and they are all ex Olympic sites. I know 1 person that has ski jumped and they were like you said in a place next to a facility and this was back in the 50's. I'll need to ask him some more but I think he said local schools around there had teams but it wasn't even popular then. He did it because in part it was like a track meet in those years and you lost points as a team if you didn't have someone jump! I bet it's probably mostly like that still. I'll see him in a few weeks and will report back haha.

Here's the one in Innsbruck. Cool link because it's got the 3d virtual tour from the restaurant and you can look down into the jump

I’m pretty sure if you give winsport x amount of money, they let you slide it. Last time I checked I think they wanted like 80-100$ to bobsled?

Will the ns Shaun White hate be as thick as it was last Olympics?

that score was messed up. you know who I'm talking about

FOR REAL. Hands down the most impressive snowboard pipe run I've ever seen and the Austrailian with a forgettable run is scored higher.

Glad the announcer isn't a judge. He's called Ayumu's trip a dub a total of 4 times. Even after watching the slomo replay.

Which broadcast? American commentator just ripped apart the judges.

CBC. Ripped em apart because they uderscored him massively? Maybe the judges didn't see it was a trip either..

Pretty much yeah. Paraphrase was they hold zero credibility now. Totally undermined them. It was great.

Who is the us judge? Scoring an 89 on that triple is something aught to go talk to a priest about smh.

Interesting to note that the judges were very split on the scoring for him. Usually for the top runs the judges are all within a couple points of each other, but for that run they were pretty well split either scoring it an 89/90 or a 95/96. US judge scored it an 89 which is total BS. Looks a little sus.

And mr white finishes the Olympics with no gold. No hate, guy has killed it in his career, and him tearing up is going to make me cry. Damn emotions.

throwback to 2018 when I scored a selfie with him waiting to poop
