From what I know out west its pretty hard to get a paying patrol job. In most places you need to have first aid qualifications (some places require emt certifications), avalanche certifications, and then you usually end up as a unpaid volunteer patroller for a couple of years and work your way...

Mine are 3 or so inches taller then me...park an fat skis. I just like the little more stable feel of a longer ski, and they float better and I feel like the spin smoother.

I'm about 5' 8" and I like my skis to be about a 183. But it really varies by ski and what your personal preferences are. But I would say the 189's would be fine for you as long as you are a pretty strong skier.
