If this is your first DSLR it would probably be ok considering you don't know your shooting style yet. I think just getting it with the 18-55 kit would be better though since you're really going to be missing out on the wide end.

I have the 17-50 on my 20D and this is a very capable combination. I find that, with the right technique, I can shoot almost any low light conditions (no fast action though). If you buy an XTi, which I believe has better high ISO performance than the 20D, and download a noise reduction software...

I have a 20D and I LOVE my Tamron 17-50 2.8 on it. A must have, imo, if you can afford it.

Sell your plasma (blood). It's easy, relatively easy, and you'll make AT LEAST $25/week. Or get a job at the mountain. Then you can ski/board for free....you'd just have to buy a board, which would be more cost-efficient than renting every time.

That lady is full of shit. I hate Ritz, the sales people are worthless...they know NOTHING. But yeah, I have a 20D (which I love) and it doesn't have in-body IS. Canon only offers it in lenses...
