clearly pipe deserves to be an olympic sport for skiers. as well it is much more difficult/technical/dangerous event than slope. room for error much less.
also should have seen pix of a few more of the top pipe guys like Xavier Bertoni, Tucker Perkins. they kicked ass at WSI w style and amp!
^^^^^^^^^^^sanchez, if the author never discusses his personal politics when he has the opportunity to do so, then no discussion will take place and the cycle of environmental destruction will continue unabated. we can't just bury our heads in the sand and hope that those making billions will change their ways...it is up to us, those with the most amount to lose (ie our sport and love) to do something.
one point to the story is taht it would be great if skier HP was in 2010, though the pipe is too short.
straight airs are lame, at least throw air to fakie. it is lame that they are required to do straight airs...any and all requirements take the free out of freestyle.
seriously, do you really think a facebook group is really going to make a difference?
FIS dictates how the sport is run and judged. you can piss and moan about it all you want but guess what, they're not going to change for you. FIS has the hold on all freestyle skiing events (somehow this includes skicross but that's another issue) and they're going to run them as they see fit. nice little dream if you think you'll see a skier pipe event in 2010 but it won't happen, the IOC said it won't happen but you kids keep believing that it'll happen...wake up!
Boards, I have no doubt that the issues the author raises are important issues. But what "discussion" are you talking about? Whether you agree with his politics or not, the article is his one-sided view of his personal politics. One-sided political articles are far afield from what should be posted on newschoolers.com. If I want politics, I'll go read a political author on a news site. But if I want skiing, I should be able to go to newschoolers.com, and not have to navigate halfway through an article to get to the ski content.
^^sanchez, every facet of society needs to mobilize to confront the threat of global climate change and unpredictability so we can continue to ski. our earth's systems are changing at an unprecedented rate and putting your head in the sand will not allow us to keep skiing, even through our own lives.
it is not politics, it is required reading, required consciousness, for the survival of snow.
pipe_munky...why the bitterness, hp snowboarding was let in with 16 months to go, we sit near that edge now. we just need NBC and other major networks to request skier HP, as it is money that talks in the Olympic movement, and we need the sponsors on-board so the networks will demand action.
Boards, I agree that climate change may be a serious problem for skiers, but the author was talking more politics than just climate change. My point still stands. Politics don't belong on newschoolers.com, and if they're related to skiing, they should have their own separate article. They should not be included every time one particular author gets a chance to write, or does a videoblog, or whatever.
Besides, if I wanted "required reading" for climate change issues, there are WAY more sources I would go to and trust than this article.
ps I joined the group too and invited 500+ friends to do the same! even if 5% of ppl I invited joined, thats 25 peeps I got in! Good luck! Nothing would make me happier than seeing skiing in the 2010 Games!!!
wow...newschoolers may be progressing out of its intellectual infancy...glad you people are talking about more than the common b.s, but let us focus on the topic at hand better than our author may or may not have...
skiing should be an olympic sport because the level has progressed to such a degree that it SHOULD be present on a global venue such as the olympics and respected by the FIS...SHOULD is our opinion...WILL however is fact- it will eventually be there. Whether or not we have any say in this future inevitability is probably not even up for debate. I hardly think that anyone is really paying attention to our written words on the subject...at least anyone who has the power to make it happen. Our actions however may keep the ball rolling...the more people who care, the more fans at the venues, the more profitability for the sponsors, the more money in the pot, the *better the show...im not saying lets stop talking about it, because in talking we not only give or take ideas, but more importantly we share them, as many of us are doing. Unfortunately this is when I stop writing because a very young vietnamese kid just lit a cig next to me at the internet cafe...a 12 year old playing counterstrike smoking a cig...wtf? look at me...i cant even stay focused on the subject...i think i'll join a facebook group and hope for the best.
