Zoom Lens Help - Nikon

Basically what it comes down to is I hate the Nikon Lens, its too bulky especially when zoomed, slow - almost useless inside with out cranking my iso, and I just havent gotten the clarity I want out of the lens.. Not sure what it is, but I can tell which lens I was shooting at when after I check them on the computer.

I do however love my Tamron, sometimes its slow to focus, or miss focuses, but I still love it. What I want is a zoom lens that I'll like just as much.

Im hoping for something along the lines of 28-200 or maybe even a 50-200, but I hate how restricted the 70-210 feels. I'm more leaning towards third party lens, as it will be cheaper, and everything I read says unless your a professional with a keen eye, you wont see a difference.

Right now, Im looking at the Sigma 28-200 3.5-5.6 or the Tamron 28-200 3.8/5.6 Af.

Suggestions on those, or ideas for other lenses is greatly appreciated.

Also does anyone know how high you can safely turn up the iso on a D70, Im getting grain at 640, and that seems kinda low.

check out the sigma 70-200 f2.8. variable aperture lenses piss me off, so i try to stay away from them as much as i can. the sigma 70-200 doesnt have any image stabilization like the nikon does, but it costs a few hundred less. tamron makes a similar lens, but i would stick to the sigma. i have been reading reviews on them both and the sigma seems to AF very quickly and accurately. it gets better reviews than the tamron. The fixed aperture is nice because it helps with shooting in low light at long focal lengths.
as for your iso, with a better body you will be able to bump it up more (the d70 is a great body, but compared with a d3 or something along those lines, it doesnt hold up). it has to do with the sensor, so a cheaper body with a not as great sensor at high iso means more noise. my d200 has similar problems. i cant push it past 800 without getting very very grainy shots.

also, the "macro" version of the sigma lens seems to have lots of problems, so be sure to check reviews on both of them before deciding on anything.

Yeah I love that the tamron is a fixed, but a major concern of mine is cheap..

as hypocritical as that statement is in photography, I dont use zoom lenses much, but would like something for the 1 out of ever ten times I shoot that I need something past a 50..

stock lenses are doo doo... also the more general purpose you go, the worse performance you are going to get, especially in low end lenses. a 55-200 is garbage, but something like that 70-200 or my personal favorite the nikon 80-200 2.8 is going to perform better. I didnt even carry zoom lenses for a while but now i pack that 80-200 and couldnt be happier

agreed. its nice to have zoom when your shooting an event of some sort and cant take a ton of time to set up the shot. i used to use an 80-200 but had to give it back to the place i was interning at. its a great lens

Yeah I know the more general purpose the lens, the worse quality.. but I was hoping there was at least a decent 28-200 or 28-135

50-70 isn't too bad, i carry a 35-70 to fill it and i RARELY use it... i use my 50/1.8 and my 85 1.8 95% of the time in that range and almost never touch my mid-range zoom.

I struggle with a HUGE gap between 10.5 and 35, so i think im going to pick up a 24mm prime or potentially sell the 10.5 and get a 12--24... not sure yet

if your looking for wide angle, check the tokina 11-16 f2.8. its really sharp and really wide. if your looking to fill in more of the gap i would probably go 12-24 though, the only thing i dont like is that most are f/4 or so.
i need to fill the 16/18-50 gap now
