I've only seen those for big cities like ones in California and stuff. I've always thought it was just like a sub-zip code. Like more exact? I could be wrong.

my bad, i just noticed that whenever I send a check for my car loan, those last 4 digits coorespond to the po box. Same with my student loan. Here's the real explanation if anyone cares:

ZIP+4

In 1983, the Postal Service began using an expanded ZIP Code system called 'ZIP+4', which are often called 'plus-four codes'. A ZIP+4 code uses of the basic 5-digit ZIP plus an additional 4-digits to identify a geographic segment within the 5-digit delivery area, such as a city block or a group of apartments or an individual high-volume receiver of mail, or any other unit that could use an extra identifier to aid in efficient mail sorting and delivery. Use of the plus-four code is not required, but it helps the Postal Service direct mail more efficiently and accurately because it reduces handling and significantly decreases the potential for human error and possibility of misdelivery.

You guys are all a bunch of morons (other than 'nut'). Like he said (or found, rather), it doesn't identify an individual house or P.O. Box, but a specific area within a zip code. It's not just for California or individual states with more crowded areas. Alaska has them, as well. The neighborhood I lived in had 2330 for their code within a larger area that had the five-digit zip. Idiots.

Sorry abuot the rant, the P.O. Box part was partially correct, but that only applies if you have a P.O. Box. As far as house addresses go, see my previous post.

the description said...'high volume mail receivers'...there's the explanation. If it's the address of the Admission Office of a college, it's likely to have that code, since they are expected to get a lot of crap

Alright, I'm going to settle this...

You all have the last portion of the zip code. The first portion denotes your town. You all know that part. The second part denotes your exact house.

Basically, if you wanted to, for postal service purposes, you could write just the full entire 9-digit postal code, and they could deliver it.

Problem is, it is more difficult, as well as MUCH harder to remember for people.
