Zig Zag song choice

Went to a screening of Zig Zag last night and was stoked on the skiing and overall vibe of the movie. However I was surprised when I heard Me and the Devil by Gil Scott-Heron which was also in PoorBoyz The Grand Bizarre. I was taken aback by the audacity of Level 1 to use the same song as a outstanding PoorBoyz movie. Yes the Grand Bizarre came out in 2011 but there are so many songs out there that you shouldn't repeat them in ski movies. Has this happened before in other movies and I just haven't noticed until now?

How many times has sail been used? Who cares. if the song is a banger and put to some bad ass skiing I dont think it's that big of a deal.

Yo but I think music choice is way more important than a lot of people think. It’s a way to express the personality and style of the skier. I’m not sure big film companies don’t really express the skiers identity, it’s just some cool skiing.

Does anyone know how much input skiers have on their edits in different companies?

I feel like the “it doesn’t matter it’s just a song” argument for reusing songs doesn’t work in this case. I don’t think it should be any sort of big deal if someone puts an already-used song in a web edit or something similar... But major ski movies biting other ski movies’ music? That’s weak, projects that scale should be deliberately orginal.

Anyway, that LJ segment in Grand Bizarre was nuts and I watched it so many times - and the Gil Scot Heron song was a core part of it. For me, seeing it work so well there just takes the freshness out of hearing it again elsewhere.

I thought by now everyone in a L1 movie would be making an original track for their own segment that would be available on soundcloud through a secret link on the L1 website.

It does matter. Do your homework Level 1.

Agreed. There is too much good music in the world for this kinda thing to happen. KC Deane picked this song for his part in ZigZag and online release, rights were secured, and no one noticed the overlap until it was too late. (Other than that we've all heard plenty of Gil Scott-Heron over the years.) And now it's a tiny asterisk on a movie I personally quite like, and am otherwise very fuckin happy with. Way she goes.

I lost it when Ghostface Killah started playing during Will's seg, never thought that would happen lolz.

Also "Stay Away" by Charles Bradley is in 4Bi9 All Damn Day, but I don't think that had the viewership that Grand Bizarre did.
