Youtube removing the dislike count on videos

What are your guys thoughts on this?

This honestly makes me like new schoolers even more. Can people not take criticism anymore? The dislike button is super helpful. Like if I'm looking at a tutorial online and I see a bunch of dislikes on it I know it's not reliable, or any video in general. If it has massive dislikes I'm not going to waste my time watching it.

Wouldn't have anything to do with the ratio popping up on literally every video national news media puts out. Nothing to do with that at all.

You ever been in the comments section of a YouTube video? They should delete that shit.

You sure it still exists can’t even find it anymore they move it like twice a week

Why is the thumbs down even there, should just be a thumb up if the thumb down don't work , smh

That's what I was thinking, apparently they are keeping it so you can get better recommended videos

I dont even pay attention to votes on yt vids but you should be allowed to downvote garbage.

but if you really want to trash a video then write a comment.

Lol participation trophies haha. Fucking can't stand that shit. I remember when I was like 10 and got the "most improved player" award on the tennis team. Like motherfucker I'm your best player, this is an insult. You gotta earn your turns.

When I saw people disliked the prince solo during while my guitar gently weeps at the rock and roll hall of fame it kind of became clear to me that public opinion just kind of sucks ass and my life would be better not knowing what a bunch of shit for brains internet trolls actually think?‍♂️ Imma go watch it again ???

Stats are too complicated for people's brains.

I wish they'd keep the number of downvotes for tutorials, otherwise I don't care because I don't really watch anything else on YouTube, besides ski edits that are linked via NS.

Idk what to think about this. Sometimes dislikes/downvotes are good. In other cases, aka reddit, it definitely promotes group think. Someone will say some crazy untrue shit, but as long as it aligns with some larger leftist views anyone with a more nuanced response will get downvoted to oblivion.

Republicans caring about something stupid like the down vote feature on youtube. About par for course.

everything needs a dislike button.

you need the option to say "i dont like this". on a lot of stuff your only options are "i like this" and "i feel nothing about this". Neutrality and praise arent the only possible reactions to something.

this is something i will always stick with republicans on, i think it’s pretty fucking stupid to remove things like that. They’re just chipping away at any little “free speech” options you got and that including you being an asshole online. It angers the fuck out me that instagram sometimes doesn’t let me say “fuck” you “douche” without HRRE DURR GUIDELINES DONT BE A BULLY UHHHHHHHHHRHRRHRHR.

Either everything is okay or nothing is, and republicans have showed no interest in regulating big tech, they just bitch and moan about cancel culture when anyone and everyone has the right to shit on what they want.

better to stick with them on this issue than stick with the left because their toxic ass hyper progressive asses ruin everything that can be “offensive”

idk most prominent leftists I've seen have advocated for content on platforms like twitter and facebook to be protected by the first amendment. Bernie Sanders said Trump shouldn't have been banned from twitter. Either tech companies can regulate their own platform however they see fit, or content on their platforms needs constitutional protection. Anything in between will result in severe political bias and censorship.

as a leftist I can confirm. first ammendment is everything.

also LAAAAMe for removing dislikes, criticism is so fucking important if ur a content creator, how you gonna know what the people want

one thing a lot of people may not have realized was that a dislike actually helped a video reach people more than no reaction. The only videos that will benefit are the wildly unpopular videos that will be pushed to trending no matter what.

doesn’t matter if they support it or not, online censorship is gonna grow either way.

Self censorship for fear of facing scrutiny is not real censorship. Grow thicker skin and stand by what you believe. 1A Protecting speech on the internet will decrease the real censorship and limit the abilities of propaganda.

I think it's fine, public downvotes on content promote toxic behavior and if someone doesn't like a video, they can still dislike it and the creator sees it.

I wouldn't be surprised if reddit gets rid of downvotes one day as well.

I would argue that if someone has criticism, they should comment. dislike/downvotes are passive as fuck and promote people to just hatehatehate without expressing anything. If a creator really wants feedback, a downvote/dislike isn't really a good measure.

Fair point, I forgot comments existed for a minute, but yea it def leaves room for more constructive criticism

Comments are nice, but if I'm looking for a tutorial it's much easier to find a good one by looking at upvote to downvote ratio, and if there are a fair amount of downvotes buts it's the only video I'll read comments to figure out what's wrong.

It's a minor inconvenience and I guess worth it if it makes stuff less toxic.

Yeah I had a friend who told me he uses upvotes/downvotes on education related videos. Minor inconvenience for sure, but maybe 1000 likes vs 100 likes also show the value now without the dislikes?

That’s exactly why haha. All the news channels kept getting downvoted and I was for it

Shit content shouldn't be differentiated from good content?

Keeping comments away from the votes what is more open and democratic than simple thumbs up or thumbs down. You also have the option to not vote.

Not to mention cyber hall monitor moderators like you (on more heavily moderated sites at least) are going to remove any comments they don't agree with or deem 'toxic' anyway.

The public opinion is not always the most trustworthy.

I much prefer 4chans no upvotes/down votes system because then you have to actually explain your reasoning.

4chan is a cesspool. Even if there were up/downvotes, it would be for the most fucked up shit.

I dont disagree with you and the majority of the time you're right, but there used to be some truly heartfelt stuff coming from there now and then and those stories are still my favorites
