Your First Year of Park

Hey guys (and gals),

How'd your first year of park skiing go? What kind of tricks did you learn and how often were you working at them. Any funny stories about embarassing falls etc. looking back?

Pretty sure the worst part for me was sliding a box, skis split apart and the rest is history. Some dick up the hill yells "That guy just nutted himself!" :(

Let's hear it NS.

My first year I learned 180s and 360s of jumps. I was such a pussy. I would almost shit my pants before trying a 360. My first try at the 360 I went off axis and did like a sloppy cork 3 to neck. I tried to hit an A box and slipped at the top, nutted oh so hard, and landed flat on my back snow angel style.

I would get so nervous to try new tricks. I had to force myself to try 360 every day. When I landed my first one, I felt like I was the fucking king. I felt like I could get any bitch in the world. Then I realized that I still suck.

Same happened to me :'D

First year was honestly a let down (12-13 season). I worked my ass off all summer to go to the lake placid water ramp camp. I didn't learn shit. I was too much of a püss to try anything during the ski season. I slid the small 2 foot rail all day everyday, with 360s and the occasional 540 thrown in off the small jumps. I grew a small pair of balls every now and then and threw an ugly frontflip or an equally ugly underflips. I also wore a hideous gaper onesie which attracted the attention of park rats who made fun of me on the daily. Still had a shit ton of fun, but my expectations were too high.

But this simply fueled the fire. I worked my ass off once more, and went to Ohio dreams. Actually learned a good bag of tricks, and spent what was sometimes hours on my trampoline at home.

Then ski season came around (13-14). I was comfortable sliding every rail in the park and had a much sense of style. I could blunt 5 almost every jump, and throw fronties off knuckles a lot. I could 2 both ways out of any rail, and mastered every simple swap. I actually looked somewhat good. I ditched the onesie for a hoodie and some baggy pants. I went from being "that gaper kid who slides the baby dick rail all day" to "that kid who is actually somewhat good, but not too good". Towards the end of the season I learned rodeos, flat 3s, and most importantly big ass backflips. So to anyone having a hard time progressing, just know that great things will come if you strive to achieve them.

in my first year of park i learned how to slide pretty much every box and the mellow rails...as far as jumps go, i was always scared shitless to do anything so i would only do grabs off of jumps and got a good number of grabs down

I was 14 when I first started and I could 180 360 and 540. I could switch 1 and 3 and grab with a 1 and 3. I could do pretty much any box and 270 out of them. And I could never do a rail I think it was a mental block or somyBut on Saturday my first day back on skis I got every rail at killi even the DFD and on Tuesday I went super ham on the donkey

started to develop a love for park when was i 9 learned 180's, 360's your basic rails and boxes all off the smaller features of the park.

was too much of a pussy to try anything else until i was 11/12 learned 540's, two outs even tried my first backflip. When i was 13 didn't really progress much apart from learning 720's,

I then spent a bit of my summer at momentum learned flat 3's cork 3's, the next season i expanded off what i had learned at momentum i learned flat 5's rodeo 5's, linclon loops, frontflips and cork 7's

this summer i tried my first dub flat 9

Good stuff^

Unfortunately for me this is my third year and I'm at like 3's and 5's off of jumps. 2's both ways out of rails. I expect to improve a lot this season though.

I ate shit. Alot.

It was hard for me to progress the first season because I was always self conscious about what other people thought about me in the park. Once I stopped giving a shit I progressed much faster.

My first park season was last season. I did alright I learned to spin 1s, 3s, 5s, and switch 1s I can slide boxes and rails. I attempted a backflip once and over rotated and hurt my back on the last day of the season. So from that I guess I learned to NEVER call last run.

Played hockey growing up and this was my first year ever skiing and let me tell ya this sport takes some balls to do to

Lol! Ofcourse, It always happens to a first timer. After all, you'll look back and will just laugh about the shit that you'd went through. Good luck!

Last season was my first year ever skiing. My best friend convinced me to try it because i had snowboarded for 5 years.

Skiing is much more fun hahaha fuck snowboarding. Heres some video of my first year

during my first year in the park, i progressed faster than most. on jumps, i learned how to 360 and 180 with grabs regular and switch and i learned backflips. On rails, i could slide every rail in my park both ways by the end of the season. i could also 270 on, and i learned 270s out all 4 ways. I also could 450 out sometimes. On top of all of that, i learned all 4 swaps and began getting into multiple swaps in one hit and swaps to spinning out.

my progression mellowed out by mid season. My first few weeks, i was learning a handful of tricks each time i went to the hill. by mid season, learning something new was not a daily occurrence.

/claim?

Damn dude that sounds crazy haha, impressive

Well my first year of park was this past season and i was not very good. Could do all the boxes and I learned 360's and 180's. I could not do rails though - Metal Block i guess. I hope to progress much more this year and grow a pair

This is actually my first year of park this year, used to snowboard. I started in March so I have a month of experience so far. I've had some pretty bad moments already but have improved a lot. About third or fourth day, I was learning boxes, and I tried a rainbow box, about 7-8 feet high at the top. I crossed my skis and fell of the side and ate shit. Almost fractured my knee, couldn't walk for 3 weeks.

So far, I have learned 180s and boxes. I can ski pretty well actually, for only skiing a month.

to be fair, i skied for around 7 years and snowboarded around 4 years before moving to park skiing. In fact, i started skiing park because i was frustrated with snowboarding on a summer setup. Basically, my frustration lead to me trying my brother's skis out on the summer setup. i ended up learning to slide a rail on my first day and was super stoked on skiing. the next season, i bought skis and it lead to learning all those tricks haha

so technically i came into my first season of park being able to slide rails right foot forward. Looking back on it, it helped me a ton with learning basic rail ticks quickly. I should have mentioned this in my last post.

That was my first year in a nutshell. Keep in mind I had been snowboarding park for like 4 years prior to this. Still a good season!

ok first year of park came at my 11th year skiing. or somewhere in there. so i picked up spins 360,180's quickly; but i did have issues on rails. My best trick was spinning on boxes and straight slide rails to switch. corrugated pipes where off limits as well was kink rails. slid a 3 kink box DFD at break once and got ballsy and dub ejected and body slide most of it, didn't try kinks until 2 years later. it is defiantly a slow process.

Last year was my first at park and I got 180's off small jumps and 90 on boxes to switch. Rails and 360's to be conquered this season.

My first year of park hasn't begun yet... Pebble creek represent.

I'm hoping to get a decent rail game and park jump game(I hit a lot of natural jumps/features) so I can take a trip down to park city for a bit and enjoy myself with a real park.

Just have fun with it. Don't worry so much about learning tricks because you have to and just learning things you think are fun. If you get frustrated send some groomer laps, glade runs, or straight air some jumps to clear your head.

Are you going to fall when learning (Hell yes) but you should be having fun most of the time. If you're having a good time out there you'll get better, you might never go prop but that's not really going to happen for many people anyway.

Kids are progressing really fast these days. All these wild tricks have already been done. You're seeing 810's out of rails as a goal, a while back just sliding a rail on skis was gnarly.

Make some friends in the park to shred together, help each other out, motivate each other to try new shit, and make fun of each other when you nut yourselves. If you're having fun together you'll progress. It's something that happens.

A lot of it is muscle memory. Everything you learn that's hard becomes easy, allowing you to push it a little more. Your confidence grows with this giving you the balls to chuck some things that terrified you at the start.

Just have a good time, hang out in the park, ski with friends, and progression will come.

Like most of the Guys on the thread here I started park last season. I started off learning pretty fast my mountain didn't have enough snow to make jumps but I could slide boxes really well, I met up with this guy I didn't know and we shredded together the whole day. He convinced me to try a rail and I slide half of it then fell an tacoed the rail ( ow ) in January I fucked up my foot skating so I was out for a month. When I got back comp season was about to start so I had to go HAM in the park to catch up to my friends who also started this year. Since I had no one to tell me how to do the tricks I wanted to do I just manned up and threw them and hoped for the best. This and a low din setting led to me landing a trick, having a ski pop off and me falling on the ski which cut open my leg. This meant I was out for about another month. I sort of learned how to do 360s but I also corked them heavily so I landed them really backseat and slid out so I didn't count them. I got really far behind the rest of the new park skiers and at that point stopped caring. Last day of the season I broke my back so I couldn't go to the first week of Woodward. Luckily I managed to go the last week and now I'm ready to kill it this season and hopefully look good doing it. I sort if learned how to Lincoln loop so hopefully I can stick it in a comp this spring.

Summary: I suck, got injured because I suck. Went to Woodward, yeah.

My first year of skiing wasn't really a year. I spent the whole season (it was my first, 4 years ago) being a punter and having a lot of fun, and then I met the boys and my now boyfriend. Riding with them took me into the park - which I only discovered with 3 weeks left until closing. I learnt how to slide boxes and a few baby rails, and I also managed a 360 off (what I still think) was a really big jump. I've never done a season since then - just a few weeks here and there and a lot of time riding indoor in the UK. I always wonder how much more quickly I might progress if I actually dedicated whole season to park.

last year was my first season of freestyle( i had learned to do normal skiing when i was 5) and i learned 1 both way, 3, and 5's no grab, a few grabs, most boxes, some flat rails and flat-down rails, fat tubes, down fat tubes, left 2 and switch on on boxes only, and very sloppy left 2 out on a tube, spinning on boxes. biggest jump I've thrown a spin off was probably 10-12 feet. also got my first tramp dub this summer at woodward at copper. Sustained a heavy knee injury near end of season which put me out for this season. hopefully next season yields some new stuff!

That sucks dude, which week were you at copper I was there week 6

My first year in the park I threw some "huge" spread eagles, bruised my hips to pieces on some boxes, and grew to a level 10 gaper.

but really I was terrible. I had fun doing it though, and that is all that matters

This is pretty much me rn, I am a big pussy and won't try anything just because I don't want people laughing at me and i can't get past that so i dont try anything therefore learn anything. All i can do is a 180 and go straight off boxes...... sad

I started about halfway through last season. I'm really a pussy when it comes to doing new things, but I am going to force myself to this year. I've only skied 3 days this year, so I haven't tried anything new. So far I can slide boxes, slide boxes to switch, do really crappy spins on top of wide boxes, 180, switch 180, almost 360, nollie onto almost anything, do a fairly decent amount of grabs. I am going to sack up and try some stuff soon, I want to get better and make myself do more stuff.
