What is your definitiopn of underground. I always say my fav style of music is underground hip-hop, but in my mind that includes J5, Jedi Mind etc.

My def. is that underground is basically anything that isn't on the radio or MTV/MM very often

If i say Jurassic 5, or Atmosphere in school...people won't know what's going on

What do you think

yea i figured, they seem to be around here. I could ask every person in my town, and only 1 person would say 'i know them' compared to if i asked 50 cent...but that's a bad example. Classified would be underground, Atmosphere?

I believe the proper definaintion of underground is a group which is either unsigned or signed by a label under a certain size, the size being relatively small. Basically, this means you can't typically buy an underground album in your local HMV.

i say that underground pertains to the subject matter of the music. in other words, if the artist doesnt rap about hos, bitches, 40oz, cars, cash, etc.. but its pretty hard to tell now a days

 
Dosh you are an idiot. I'd like to see one underground rapper that doesn't mention cash just once. Money makes the world go 'round. Subjects of which rappers speak about in the 'mainstream' and underground are not always entirely different, it's just that we see more creativity and quality in the underground rappers because they have to work harder to get there work out, whereas 'mainstream' rappers just need to get albums done to get their paychecks so they just talk about the same shit.

i dont listen to rap but really...anything that less than 15% of my school knows about. mostly underground punk and shit..Stay Gold is a good example..I have not met one person who knows abotu them

Underground is a group/band that gets little radio play at most, if at all. They can still be signed to a major label, just have little exposure. Underground of rap can be compared to indie of rock.

agree with most of that. anything that is a little more creative then what is on mtv. anything that isnt just the record companies telling the artest what will sell.

j5 definitly not underground, but jedi mind still is and they are the sickest underground rappers out there.

UNDERGROUND- not featuring lil jon, 50 cent or any artist on the radio.

2. Not listened to by the popular mainstream kids at your local high school

3. Not gay, and the rappers actually rap instead of shouting YEAHH! in the background

 
J5 definitely used to be undergroud..but because they're so good...they've surfaced. Jedi Mind Tricks is sick but their lyrics are insanely violent.

 
I would say an underground band is:

1. not mainstream

2. not signed by any huge record labels
