you ONLY ski park?

i see a lot of people say in there posts 'but i dont only ski park, i ski the whole mountan'. well i fucking hope so! anyone who doesnt get out of the park and hit the rest of the mountain is not a real skier.

i'm a real skier, but sometimes, when your mountain isnt really a mountain in the same sense as you kids out west or up in new england see it, the park is about the only thing that poses a challenge and is worth skiing. dont get me wrong, if i had fresh snow and cliffs or trees to ski, i would, but, i dont, so at my mountain, i only ski park.

i agree...

i won't lie..i love the park...on some days i dont leave the park...but most of the time im out ripping all the steeps and big lines and huge fuckin cliffs...thats where its at

if you only ski park...chances are you can jump well but ur fundamentals are shit..i know a few skiers like that...i say get out more and rip elsewhere...i do

justo has a point. skiing ice is the only challenge I face almost when I'm skiing outside the park at most mountians in NE.

the park encourages poor skiing. the only abilities the park requires are good sense in the air, and knowing your speed.

Where as the backcountry, you have to be alert of the whole mountain. good vision (knowing your surroundings), excellent ability to ski (so you don't break yourself), knowing how to use av. beacons, shovels, and probes, knowing how to identify snow layers and making a call of the av. danger.....so much harder than skiing cord. GET OUTTA THE PARK AND DO SOME REAL SKIING.

if you can only ski park you are still a skiier. i hate it when people say that shit. some dude who has never skiied before wouldn't be able to just throw on a pair of skiis and do those types of things.

and i'm from colorado, so we obviously have some bomb ass mountains. but if it hasn't snowed within the last two or three days i am most likely heading straight to the park and not leaving. i guess i'm just spoiled but if the snow isn't soft i don't want to ski it.

respect park skiing.

i ski 98% park, i can ski, i can race, i can ski powder, i dont, i ski park........

'knowing how to use av. beacons, shovels, and probes, knowing how to identify snow layers and making a call of the av. danger'... how is that more a part of skiing the having air presence and knowing your speed? that's not skiing either, that's more skiing knowledge, i would say having air presence is a skiing ability.

i'm not trying to hate on skiing outside of the park at all, please understand that. i'm just saying that i definitely think park skiing is 'real' skiing.

If I had the option to go somewhere else worthwile I would obviously, but leaving the park where I'm from means riding over-populated groom, and other boring shit. Would you leave?

bitches bitches bitches, most of the people who ski in the park are good skiers outside of it. Skiing steeps is nowhere near as hard as throwing down in the park. The only people who defend the 'ski everywhere' idea are people who cannot ski in the park. And seriously I doubt most of you ski at a ski area who's 'extreme terrain' are anything special. So quit telling people what to do. Why don't you get your fat old suck asses away from the rocks and shitty coverage and try to learn a trick. Quit being pussies and get off the ground.

i think if i was cazy sick in the park, like sponsored and shit, i wouldnt leave either. but 95% of people on this site arent. you need a good balance of both. look at this years films, alot of the pros are taking it to the backcountry, geting out of the park, skiing big lines. i think its great. now go out and ski you pansies!!!

haha i knew people'd rip on me for that comment. but i'm with RS4LIFE. everything i have had the opportunity to ski so far in my life, i have been able to. i have never been out west, so i cant say whether or not i can ski deep powder, but i have been to VT where we got a foot of snow several nights in a row and it was a great time. if i didnt ski in pennsylvania and had access to better terrain, i would certainly ski it, and i could ski it. i have been skiing for 16 years, and am a certified instructor, so if you rip on me for skiing park and not having any fundamentals, you have no idea what you are talking about.

yeah for god sakes, were not all fortunate enough to live by a mountain that offers real powder skiing, or cliffs to ski off.

im a C.S.I.A lvl 1, meaning i teach and am a good skier. but when im given a chance to ski how i want, the only time im not in the park is when im getting to or leaving the park. other than those 2 runs, i spend my whole day hitting either pipe, jumps or rails.

-jeff

I'm actually trying to ski more park and less 'all-mountain' since the big jumps are where I would really like to improve. Usually though, I don't make it to the park until late in the day when things start to close.

basically, to be a good skier, you gotta be able to throw down all over. period.

'i got a squad of killer bitches that ALL carry uzi's' - Jeru the Damaja

ya, a lot of the pros are starting to move more towards big mountain shit. there are only a handful of lift served mountains in north america where those dudes are riding, almost no one on this site has access to that. sure 95% of people on this site aren't sick in the park, and i'm sure it's probably higher number than that, but those people also don't have the access to 'big lines'.

JD and others you have to understand that a ton of people that ski do not have what the people out east and west have. What we have is 500-800 vertical ft and some pretty nice terrain parks. Why would you want to go anywhere else is all you have are 1 minute runs that pose no challenge to you what so ever?

I'm not saying all I ski is park because it is definitally not and if I lived out west I would be in the bc all day long. Most people in the midwest would much rather be hitting the whole mountain but we have to use what we have and make a good use out of that.

im from minnesota, and i ski mainly park, because i dont want to ski for 4 sec. on the regular hill. I race, and am fairly good at it, so i no that i can ski other places too.

this is gonna get me bashed... if youve noticed, most of the so called 'park pros' have the skills to ski big mountain, but look like shit doing it on film, theyre getting out of the park, but they shouldve waited a couple years to get their nonpark steeze going, i dont want to see gorillas in valdez

O yes, you can ski backcountry is syracuse ny

well us east coast people dont have a real mountain therefore we cant ski big mountain. powder is almost non existant and if u can find a cliff that is rare. therefore the only thing still challanging to us is the park. therefore thats y we do it all day. and i race for half the yr so that gets me out and lets me work on my actual skiing. but park rules. atleast on teh east coast

i agree, jib monkeys who are only in the park are not considered real skiers, take kent kreitler's word for it in high life. if there is a park there is also a groomer where you can work on perfecting your turns not all hunched over like an old man.

Believing in jesus is like believing in santa claus, once you reach a certain age you realize that it's all made up

I take back my comments that i said above. people who live on the east coast are somewhat deprived of 'natural terrain parks' like we have out west. my bad. If I had 500 ft. vert I would probably only ski park too, so yeah. my bad, if you have the gnarly stuff and choose not to ski it and only ski park, then that's another story.

i try to balance out both--hit the park for a few jumps or a run or two in the park, but then ski everywhere else the rest of the day. The runs aren't all that great, but they're there, and I love skiing in general. Period.

I hope that people understand that there is no real skiing... In fact, all of the things you see on the mountain, whether they be snowboarders, or skiers, or even skiboarders, are all fake...

Seriously guys, this argument is rediculous. REAL skiing to most people is when you wear two boots, snap into two skis, and carry two poles. At this point angle yourself so you are facing downslope and wha-la... I mean, there is no validity in anything said above, save for the comments about east coast snow and mountains.

I live on the west coast, but the idea of backcountry 1, freaks me out, and 2, bores me. Especially that hiking stuff. A little hiking is good, but i not exactly a rabid powder hound, so hiking a mile and back for some steeps does not tickle my pickle. So every one chill and remember:

The more park/pipe monkey the more first tracks, and

The more big mountain dudes the less traffic in the park.

Who ever said learning tricks is as easy as skiing the syeeps is a fucking retard. If that were true boners like chris turpin would have had a hell of a time learning all those tricks but ultimately blowing at actually making it down the hill. How many intermediate skiers do you see in the park throwing some pretty good tricks. A shit ton. Personally I learned 3's in a day. But on the other hand I have yet to see a crappy skier mach down a big face with some huge GS turns and keep it under cintrol and smooth. There is no way the two are even comparable. You don't have to be a good skier to ski park. nuff said.

This year I hope to see more kids incorporating newschool with big mountain riding and getting out of the park.-Matt Levintal

hiking uphill fucking blows, especially in powder. Trees are awsome though, I ski mostly trees, steeps and then hit the park 4-5 times in between.

Yo, Telestar6, 3's are not what most of the 'Park Rats' I know would call a decent trick. I learned 3's when I was 9 off a two foot kicker in my backyard. Try learning a 7 or a misty in a day and then talk to me. If you can, then ski mroe park and go get noticed; but if you can't, then you'll realize that park skiing is not 'harder' or 'easier' than big mountain, it's different. It takes different muscles, different athleticism, and presents different challenges.

The highest level of skiing is throwing down park moves on the big mountain, that's why we ski both.

Alright, so my take on the whole mess is pretty simple, in an interview with Tanner Hall and Pep Fujas in Axis a few months back and Tanner said of Fujas that he was the best skier he knew because he could do everything really well, big mountain, park, race, moguls, everything. Most people would consider T. Hall one of the best park skiers on the public scene right now, and he said himself that he wasn't a great big mountain skier at all and he really needed to work on it, yet most people would say that he is still a great skier. So, more precisely maybe its not that you can't be a great skier if you only ride park, or if you just do big mountain. But you can be a great skier, just not a superb, 'all around' skier, until you have mastered all aspects of skiing. Just my 2c.

last time i checked kreitler supported the ski everywhere slogan. but that guy blows so don't listen to me.

My main goal when I ski is to have fun. And depending on the conditions, I have the most fun skiing park, so I do. Plus, I need to feel like im progressing when I ski. I don't get that feeling anymore skiing around on the groomers, so I try to learn new tricks and get higher in the air.

ive been skiing for 11 years so my fundamentals are really good but the only reason i just stay in the park is because its pretty hard to do alot of true skiing on 500 ft of vertical

The shit hasnt even begun to hit the fan

ive been skiing regularly for 13 years now, and i got bored of skiing, i can ski anything, the only thing that challenges me is the TP, lol our hill is so small though, they have the smallest 4 person chair lift in the world, it only has 4 poles.

Farp is gods gift to man.

I'm so big

you'd have to jump and swing up

just to hit me in the knees....

i ski 75% park on sunny days 25%an big mountain on pow days i only ski big mountain, trees and steeps because the park is too slow

IT'S AFGHANIMATION!!!

i live on the east coast and am new to freestyle skiing but have seen skiing since i was 8. i am comfortable all over the mountain, but am always looking to get better. for me the park is just one more part of the mountain to conquer. but for people to say that they only ski one part of the mountain is shit. everyone has their own preference but in my opinion you gotta be able to handel whatever the mountain throws at you. check out this kick ass article from a 2000 skiing magazine where glen plake, seth morrison, doug coombs, and shane scoz get together for a warren miller film. each one represents something different but all of them have one thing incommon a love for skiing

also, id KILL to ski powder, glades, cliffs, anything, but i dont have any oppertunities to. all i get is ice on our 700 vert double blacks, so duh im going to ski in the park. if you want to pay for my trip to whistler or anywhere out west then ill gladly ski 'the whole mountain', but until then, fuck you
