i just want a simple point and shoot digital camera, capable of legit video and action shots. price range

Cannon t2i without a doubtmy little skiing crew has 2 of themyou could say we were in love... and a cannon 7d if you were looking to spend a lot

Either you can't read, or you know where to get those cameras for under $400. I'm guessing the former.

1. Cannot recommend this enough, I had a G7 and it was the best point and shoot I'd ever used.

Go with that if you want to take GOOD photos with a point and shoot and want a lot of manual controls (damn close to the controls of an SLR). Video is average, 640x480 @ 30fps.
2. My other recommendation, NOT point and shoot, but one of those point and shoot DSLR cross-over things. I would recommend you forget the point and shoot (unless you really want it to be compact) and get one of these (would recommend Nikon or Canon over Sony):
Canon Powershot SX20: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/643179-REG/Canon_3633B001_PowerShot_SX20_IS_Digital.html
Nikon CoolPix P100: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/675073-REG/Nikon_26212_CoolPix_P100_Digital_Camera.html
My friend bought one of these (Nikon), they're amazing. Lots of zoom, not bad manual controls, really good HD video, high resolution, fairly compact.
