uh dashboard is just good music, i dont care about poetry in the lyrics, if I want poetry ill read a book. Dashboard has good chord progressions and strumming and shit and the guys voice is good.

emo is emotional music. in essence its bands singing very sentimentally about nothing. often they sound extremely whiny. its not that great.

emotional music. usually tagged onto emotion punk or emotional rock. usually comes with emotional lyrics, and an emotional singer. comes in all shapes and sizes. loud and soft. screaming and confident and crying, all that. The white stripes are 'emotional' but they arent tagged onto the 'emo' scene. The 'emo scene' has been changing quite a bit over the last few years.. it was cool awhile ago until bands figured out that they could take over the industry with it and make some money.. some of the new stuff is still good but in any case, thats a small rundown.

^ yeah you got it. emo is short for emotional punk. it was formed by bands who wanted to get away from the party hard image of the early punk music scene. That's also why emo has always had a strong connection with the strait edge stuff.

i seriously used to think that emo was a derogatory term (short for emotional) made up by punks or whatever that made fun of kids for listening to such wussed out emotional music. but then i heard emo kids start using it themselves and before i knew it, it was a whole attemptedly self-respecting genre.

 
Emo has just become a buzz-word for the media to use to describe what they used to call indie-rock. Don't use it. Give them another five years and they'll hijack another name.

 
emo is a stupid name for some really good music. it has been around for years with no intrest from the main stream, and it was really good, but now all these stupid pop bands are trying to be emo, totally missing it, and playing shitty shitty music. emo isn't some dude crying. it is a style of playing. it orriginated from punk and hardcore, and is known for being very melodic, and more advanced than punk and instead of traditional rock, hardcore and punk, it generally has two lead guitars that work together to make the melody instead of a lead and a back up. the lyrics range from songs about break ups, to extreme political statements, to songs about cigarets. most emo isn't some dude wining.

oh yea... i forgot to mention the drums... instead of having just fast simple druming like punk, it has intricate hardcore style breakdowns and speed changes. ofcourse it is slowed down a lot from hardcore, but it is definitely not constant like punk or pop.

btw theres also a small genre building called progressive rock, that is taking styles from older emo, but with a pure alternative feel.. its goooood.
