Yay for global warming

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In theory, global warming (news - web sites) should be a good thing for the Great Lakes, right? Wrong.

Global warming means more snow, not less, for the snowbound region along the eastern border between Canada and the United States, researchers said on Tuesday.

Their study of snowfall records in the Great Lakes region and elsewhere suggests there has been a significant increase in snowfall in the Great Lakes region since the 1930s but not anywhere else.

The team, at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, said that global warming does not mean sunnier weather everywhere. Other researchers have predicted that, as the climate gets warmer overall, it could mean colder temperatures in some parts of the world and more severe weather in general as weather patterns change.

For instance, warmer surface sea temperatures could fuel more violent hurricanes and typhoons.

In the Great Lakes region, warmer temperatures mean more snow, Adam Burnett, an associate professor of geography, writes in the November issue of the Journal of Climate.

'Recent increases in the water temperature of the Great Lakes are consistent with global warming,' Burnett said in a statement. 'This widens the gap between water temperature and air temperature -- the ideal condition for snowfall.'

Burnett and colleagues compared snowfall records from 15 weather stations within the Great Lakes region with 10 stations at sites outside of the region and checked weather records dating as far back as 1931.

'We found a statistically significant increase in snowfall in the lake-effect region since 1931, but no such increase in the non-lake-effect area during the same period,' Burnett said.

Too exciting for the regional forums.

i cant describe the vibe i get when i drive by 6 people and 5 i hit

that is exactly opposite, dude. i ski in northern minnesota, and for the past 5 year we have got like 2 feet of snow total. global warming sucks! but, today we just got like 4 inches and we got some last week too. so, mabey it is getting better. i sure hope so.

exactly i didnt take the time to read

i said that cuz we got 8 inches of snow last year

Global warming might be a good thing. Where I am this summer we had a record driest summer and forest fires, and the same houses burned down now are battling floods. And we just set a record ont he coldest week in october last week.

So ya, it does suck sometimes, but you never know, it looks like it might make a extreme everything....including-winter :D :D

ya do realize that by the time you can even notice a significant change in global warning that your grand children will be dead....

yay skiing

if i dont get snow here i have a new plan, desperate as it may seem, you can understand that it is only for me to be able to ski again. ok here it goes.

The plan: Take Over the World and build a big thing to periodically block out the sun.

The means at which to make the plan possible: ok first we start with all the retarded kids, get them on our side, they could do some damage. Next we go for the blind(wut do they need the sun for anyways), we could trick them, tell them if they help us kill millions of people they will be able to see again, but we say it in a nicer way maybe like: Alright sonny all you got to do is hold that trigger down and spin around, and we will have you seeing again in now time. As they go into battle we laugh and mutter your an idiot. So after all the blind people and retarded kids are used up in battle against bush we set up a summer home in a remote place in the arctic circle. We employ the deaf to build us nuclear weapons and we focus our next attack on all of chinas enemies. We turn china and japan on our side but make sure they are still rivals. they will fight to the death for our allegiance and then we get our newly recruited ninjas to stir up a fight between the two. So now with a good bit of the worlds population wiped out we give Europe some good threats about how if they dont bow down we will nuke them, and for them to build a huge thing to block out the sun. and everybody lived happily ever after( exept all the dead people)

That could explain Australia's awesome ski season !!! its end of spring/nearly summer and theres still snow on the ski slopes

hey tahoe, global warming is happening right now and it's fucking obvious to see. later falls, earlier springs, more rain than snow in tahoe, bigger floods in winter, no water in summer. you can't just ignore it or will it away, despite what you may believe

Personally, I think the whole global warming thing is a joke. I mean, come on. That's bogus. But, either way, if it is true, your getting more snow! YAY!

ya I guess, but still its not like its making it hotter and snow less in the mountains or anything...

yay skiing

hell ya, rock on, im gonna go make a fire, drive around and get gas, mow the grass, and start another forest fire out west. hahah rock on. yay for global warming. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN!!!!!!

as the sun burns its fuel, it expands. every second of every day the sun gets closer. eventually, it will get so close that the earth and everything on it will die. when the sun runs out of fuel completely, it will explode and either a blackhole or neutron star will be left in its place which will destroy whatever is left. so shut up and enjoy what you got!

yeah, i heard the gulf stream will shift too, creating a wasteland where northern europe was because of extreme low temperatures. anyone who thinks global warming is a)non-exsistant b)good is obviously not looking at any facts.

you guys should go talk to someone who actually knows something about climate and climate change before giving us your own cockamamie theories

look, i know my fair share about the climate, and the word on the street is that the world corrects itself after many major problems occur, so we should be safe. But if global warming actually became a problemit would suck terribly because weather systems would become so uncontrollable it would be insane. For instance, weather systems would dump rain in like 2 or 3 inches an hour regularly. Also, the glaciesrs all around the world would receed further than before, creating a larger sea level, which would eventually flood all the coasts. And the larger oceans means more water to warm, so like the article said, the cold water and warm air would create more convection(evaporation and upward movement of air that creates colouds) and create 'super storms'

and i dunno about that person that is talking about the sun imploding, because from all i know it takes thousands of years for stars to implode, and the sun is bigger so it would take longer, and if anything it would just cool down the earth for a really really long time, unill like you said the earth would not be able to exist(in a super long time)

and if anyone took the time to read everyting or anything i wrote i thank you, because that took me forever

FYI:

We are still coming out of the last Ice age, so of course it is getting warmer, so how is it fair to say that global warming is due to human intervention. I'm not saying it isnt either, but you can not say it is. Have their always been glaciers on Antartica where there is now, while the continent was in the same Latitude? Evidence points to no.

The Kyoto Protocol is a made on paper solution that MIGHT work only for certain areas/

countries. ie France. The Kyoto protocol will instead cost Canada lots and lots of money, and do nothing to reduce pollution. If you actually look at the specifics of it you would see this. There is actually a credit system in it, where if a company were to be over their max pollution they can buy credits off of one, anywhere, that is under there pollution limits. Why would it work for France? France has lots of nuclear power, and not fossil fuel like in NA. It is cleaner..., until it meltsdown. Then I would take fossil fuels anyday.

One more thing, the sun is a star, and is actually a relatively small one, so yeah...

^ so yeah what, it would implode, it wouldn't implode, i don't understand

Short Skis Suck, Long Skis Truck

How can you say there is no global warming, look the pollution that any one large city creates, multiply that by the number of cities making that much pollution, how can it not be having an effect?

I didnt say it doesnt, but I didnt say it does either. What I do know is that everywhere you hear about global warming because the average temp is going up, yet you hardly ever hear it mentioned that it is actually suppose to be going up.

Not only that, but is all form of pollution necassarily bad? One of the biggest supposedly biggest 'pollutants' is CO2, yet millions of organisms need it. As in trees, and plant life that then produce oxygen for us.

What the one guys said seems to be true. The world has a way of evening itself out, and it will, even if that does mean a lot of dead humans. A lot of dead humans is never a good thing, but it has historically happened and will keep happening one way or another. ie Black plague

Well I was just reall happy to see that Michigan is supposed to get more snow. Unfortunately I don't live in an area where we get lake effect snow but I can drive to one. There was an article in the newspaper last year where there was a meeting of all the winter sports businesses in michigan and they tried to come up with alternate plans to make money during the winter since according to some study in 50 years michigan will be like arizona. How crazy would htat be?

Study: Global warming to 'substantially affect' Calif in 20 years

DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer Friday, November 7, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-07) 15:10 PST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) --

Global warming will substantially affect California in about 20 years, experts say, warning that the state is more vulnerable because of its coastline, its climate and its dependence on Sierra Nevada snowpack for water and hydroelectricity.

'It's going to affect all of us,' said Robert Wilkinson of the University of California, Santa Barbara, School of Environmental Science and Management, who wrote a 432-page treatise on the impact on California.

It means a shorter ski season in the Sierra, and poorer habitat for endangered salmon in lower streams. It may mean more wildfires and more floods. Extreme heat waves, easier spread of diseases and increased air pollution all could imperil health.

Oceans that rose 4 inches to 8 inches over the last century could rise up to 3 feet this century, swamping San Francisco Bay estuaries and endangering pumps sending freshwater from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to the Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California.

It will mean more fights over water throughout the West.

'Climate change is upon us. In 20 to 25 years, we really will be working with a different climate,' said Michael Dettinger, a U.S. Geological Survey research biologist and researcher with the Climate Research Division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Every scientific model predicts warmer temperatures, with the bulk projecting an increase in the range of 3 degrees to 6 degrees by 2100. But the computer models split on whether California will become wetter or drier.

Either way, warmer temperatures mean a shift in California's water cycle.

The Sierra snowpack that functions as the state's largest reservoir could shrink by a third by 2060 and to half its historic size by 2090. Runoff that fills reservoirs will start in midwinter, not spring. And rain falling on snow will trigger more flooding, scientists said Thursday at a seminar hosted by the Water Education Foundation.

Models projecting a drier California predict a sharp increase in critically dry periods, said Alan Hamlet, a water resources engineer with the University of Washington.

'We're going to have exacerbated conflicts over water, both in California and the Colorado Basin' that also supplies six upstream states, he said. Fortunately for California, it is rare -- but not unheard of -- for the Sierra and the Rockies to have a simultaneous drought, so usually there is substantial water for Southern California from one or the other.

The trends are already in play.

Spring temperatures have increased 2 degrees to 3 degrees since 1950, peak spring snowmelt comes two to three weeks sooner, and vegetation blooms one to three weeks earlier and stays green longer, scientists earlier told a state Assembly committee on water and climate change.

While more dams and reservoirs could capture vital runoff and control flooding, there are substantial questions where or if to build them given the uncertain long-range weather pattern forecasts. Experts predicted the state will have to rely more on conserving and reusing water, desalinization, groundwater storage, and water trades and transfers between regions.

As with the ebb and flow of the Ice Age, warmer temperatures mean grass and oak woodlands and chaparral will grow higher into the mountains over the next 100 years, while conifer forests can grow above the current tree line, said Susan Ustin, an environmental and resource science professor at the University of California, Davis.

But 100 years is a blink in geologic time, and the relatively quick change will disrupt ecosystems that need millennia to adapt, she said. Invasive species that already threaten native plants and animals may be quick to fill that void.

Earlier snowmelt means less spring runoff for salmon, and water could get too warm for them to spawn. Already, runoff into the Sacramento River has dropped 11 percent over the last century.

But warmer weather means longer growing seasons, which could help agriculture -- as long as there's enough water for irrigation, said Rick Snyder, a biometeorologist at UC Davis. While many of California's crops could benefit, its famed wine grapes need a precise combination of temperatures and could suffer, said Snyder and Wilkinson.

The effect could come down to 'if you're talking white wine or red wine,' said Wilkinson. 'Is that a great research project, or what?'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be doubting global warming at this stage is simply being naive. Maybe a few years ago, but there is now a ton of hard evidence to support it.

Sure C02 is used by plants and was very prevalent in the atmosphere prior to the industrial revolution but the levels we see now are exponentially larger than pre industrialization. A study started in the 50's done at Mauna Loa on Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific shows the increasing levels. The fact that it's C02 makes it seem less detremental to some people, i mean its not like its pure Vx gas or something... The fact that CO2 is one of the worst greenhouse gases, an amazing insulator, makes it shitty.

Also, sure we're coming out of an ice age but shouldn't the rise in temperature remain constant? Scientist have studied glacial ice, lake sediments, tree growth rings etc. and found that never has the temp jumped as fast as it has in the last 100 years. The fact that this corresponds with a huge increase in CO2 and methane is simply too hard to overlook.

Anyways, you can believe what you want. The fact of the matter is that the global ltemps. are rising, human caused or not, and we have to deal with it. This means ice storms in the middle of the winter to some people and for the lucky people of buffalo ny more snow. Overall I think the whole flooding of the coastline and major storm activity is gonna outweigh the benefits if any. That post was way too lang.
