XP question...

aight. in windows 95 i used to use the 'ping' command to see what was connected to my computer. in XP, it won't let me run the ping. it opens a window for about a micro second, and shuts it. so i know i'm doing something wrong.

anyone know?

thanks

let me further explain my horrible explanation earlier. i'm trying to figure out what ip addresses are connected to my computer. and i have not a clue how i used to do it.

thanks

euhm... Cuz it does the ping command and closes right after.

Click on Start, Run then type: 'cmd'

A Command Prompt window will open, type 'ping and_the_ip'

Now it will do the ping and you'll be able to see the results and when it's going to be finished, just type 'exit' and it will close.

^exactly you must open the dos command prompt, by either 'cmd' or in some cases you must type 'command'

ok you guys reaaalllly dont know wtf is going on, haha...

first of all, open Start, then Run, and in Run type in cmd (command opens up the older command.com when cmd.exe is the newer NT thingy) and in the command line interface type in netstat -a this will show you the active connections and the ports they are connected through. All ping does is send packets of data and check the responce and responce time and packet loss to another copmuter, it has nothing to do with checking to see whats connected to your computer. The reason in XP when you type it into run it closes after a millisecond is because its opening the program, running it, and after finding no arguments (the IP) it just closes.

I'd use Win2k, but I'm constantly switching between Mandrake and XP (for gaming) and I prefer XP's pretty-ness for the use I give it, haha.
