AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Why dont you just learn to sew? its about as much fun as XC. Get a real bike and save boring shit for when your body is to fucked up to ride anything else.

I ride XC all the time. I love it. I used to ride DH but now I don't live near the mountains anymore.

xc is much more for working out than having a good time.

If you want a real rush, get a downhill bike. It's amazing and you'll never do xc again. I did the switch and i never regret it

^ that's not true at all, i've done this before and I LOVE training...

I ride XC. Wut's the use of having a 3000 dollar bike if it only goes down hill. Get a nice light freeride bike with a nice fork with at least 3in. of travel. If U get a full suspension, make sure you can lock it out on the climbs. Otherwise get a hardtail. It'll weigh less, cost less, and it's maintenance free, but you won't be able to bomb downhill as fast as with a full suspension.

Boost like Boom-Bap!

i love XC biking, I havnt been able to get out to do it in so long though. I really wanna go out this summer but its hard withwork and no good trials near my house, at least none that Iv been able to find.

If your looking for a new bike for XC, Hard tail is the way to go. Thats how I feel anways. But then again, I just hate the feel of full suspension bikes on trails. It doesnt feel right.

I have a Norco Charger... i think its 2003, maybe 2002, and i love it. I actually have only ever rode on Norco and I havnt had any problems with them at all, but I also havnt been keeping up with news from the bikeing world and for All i know, Norco doesnt even exist anymore...

Id say your best bet is to go to a bunch of diffrent bike shops and ask them what they would recomend as a beginner to intermediate XC bike thats light enough to race. See what they say, and how much they cost... do some comparative shoping.

actually, when I said iv never had a problem with Norco, thats a lie. I havnt ever really liked the seats that come with their bikes. They break on me at the most random times, when they shouldnt break at all. One of them was cause it was a lower end bike and the seat had those teeth to adjust the angle, the other was actually probaly my fault cause i was going down a hill to fast (not on the seat at any point) and had to run into a tree to stop myself and bike from going into a pond.

did you just say "freeride" and three inch travel in one sentence?

haha, i ride a 46 lb bike, and i ride that bitch everywhere, badass XC trails, Badass DH stuff. in fact i just rode some gnar XC yesterday. XC is a blast, but so is downhill. picking one desipline of biking is a stupid move. if you ride everything, you gain the skills aquired by those desiplines.

ROAD=Endourance

DH= high speed handling skills ( i was smokin my buddies on XC race bikes, cause most of the trail we rode were rock gardens, and the handling skills ive learned from DH really helped me out)

Trials= Slow speed technical skills and blance.

Dirtjumping= air sense and, duh, jumping confidence

XC= pedaling, climbing skills, puts all the other learned skills to real world trail applications.

mountain biking is a sick sport. shit, biking is a sick sport. if you just ride one discipline, your missing out, and you wont be as good of a rider. (shit, last time we saw guys on SICK trail bikes walking a awesome part of the XC trail, and it was nothing too technical, but super fun). so yeah, theres so much you can do on two wheels (or one), and dont just pick XC, ride them all! as for a bike, let me go back and reread your post, and do a bit of research, ill point you in the right direction ;)

I don't know about that one.

To me, dh and north shore are the only fun aspect of mountain biking, it's the only thing i get a real rush out of. Other people i know only enjoy street ridng, others only enjoy trials.

It depends on interest. I need that adrenaline rush only speed and heights can give me. Climbing a hill, putting killer energy into it isn't really my thing.

Not trying to start a flame war or anything, just giving my point of view

isnt travel measures in millimeters?

Yeah travel is measured in mm...but its not that impossible to convert to inches.

Anyway, I just ordered a Freeride/XC bike. I love DH but need exercise as well. Either way, Im lovin my free bike haul pass that Vail gave me for workin at their resort.

Oh, Im getting the Jamis Dakar XLT...not the most burl bike but 5" of travel will help out a lot.

yeah, downhill, freeride, urban, djs ect are all about an adreniline rush, which is definatly an amazing feeling, but good XC does that too, and a long hard trail ride feels damn good to finish, what im saying is that pretty much any dispecline brings something benificial to the table. wheter its a huge adreninilin rush, bike handleing skills, the feeling of accomplishment, and if your lucky, you can get the oppertunity to ride trails that give you all of the above at once. that is what mountain biking is all about, maxing out your handling skills, endourance, and having a BLAST while doin it.

some bikes id look at:

specialized Enduros

Iron Horse MK IIIs

Giant riegns

Santa cruz Nomad, or a Blur LT

Trek Liquids (trek has actually stepped it up as far as non race XC bikes, i used to hate them, but they are quite nice now)

a last word of advice. buy the most expensive bike you can comfortably afford. why? becuase the differnce of a few hundred dollars equal up to more than double in higher quality parts (get the best suspension you can afford, and dont worry too much about rear derailleurs ;) they tend to get trashed. and oh yeah, run a SRAM drivetrain. the only people who dont reccomend them are the people who are too stubborn to try them. they blow shimano out of the water.

I just bought a 2006 Trek Fuel EX7 today for only 890$. Lets hear it for employee discounts!

KISS THE RINGS BITCH!

I'm going to be riding XC and downhill... so I found the bike I wanted, the santa cruz blur or heckler with WTB rocket v saddle seat. also I'm most likely going to get some WTB tires and rims as well...

try to get a hard tail, it will cost less and give you less problems, maybe get a giant but trek is also a great company, there bikes are light and easy to use but a bit more expensive though. Specialized are great, i've heard they have like no problems at all, do get clips if ur just starting to xc, u will fall cause u wont be able to get ur feet out

anybody know a website that sell santa cruz bikes?

XC is sooo much fun. Trust me, I highly recommend this bike if you have some $$. Get a TITUS Racer X. You can make this bike as light as 20 pounds. I figure if you're looking at Santa Cruz then you're willing to spend some serious $$. Trust me Titus Racer X frame, and make sure you get all SRAM components, Shimano SUCKS.

...about the drivetrains. i'm not so sure about that one. gripshift is terrible if you ride in wet/muddy conditions. this year at tapatio (stop #1 on the norba ncs) so many pros dnf'ed because they seriously couldn't turn their shifters anymore. however, the new x-9 shifters (and x-0 triggers coming out next year) are pretty sweet. either way, trigger shifters are the way to go, just stay away from gripshift.

about the drivetrains... what would be a better buy besides them, anything from WTP?

everyone runs sram components nowadays. I'd seriously look into sram

(even though i run all shimano drivetrain)

id get the ellsworth joker, its like the lightest freeride bike there is and its still one of the best freeride bikes you can use for downhill jumping and everything.

elsworth joker isn't that great for xc though. Has a lifetime frame waranty which is kick ass though

no...Shimano sucks compared to sram..have you ever riden sram its way smother then shimano....get a rocky mountain..thats what i ride and there great...

Shimano sucks sooooo bad, that's on my mom's bike and they absolutely blow nuts... I'm either getting SRAM or WTP.

Rocy Mountains are really sick bikes, the Rocky Mountain Element is a sick XC bike Whoever says that XC sucks then you guys are idiots, yes downhill is fun, but you still need to get up hills and shit. I wouldn't want a 50 pound bike as my bike that I ride around with. They're way to one dimensional, with an XC you can do anything.

haha, yeah, gripshifts suck. and no, SRAM blows the lid off Shimano, and ill break it down for your ignorant ass:

higher leverage ratio, which means, more accurate shifts.

stronger tensioner springs, so you dont drop chains like you always do with shimano, with a SRAM rear mech, you almost dont even have to run a chain guide.

no big loop of cable to snag on at the rear mech

adjustment screws face outward, and are where they should be, unlike shimano rear mechs

the open links of a SRAM derailleur are alot easier to clean than shimano

there is no spring in the mount, so the derailleur doenst constantly smash against the chainstays.

the SRAM shifters have both triggers on the inside of the bar, so you can upshift and downshift with your thumb, which means you dont have to take your fingers off the brake levers.

hummmm, anything else? oh yeah, the new X.O. has a carbon rear cage, so no mre bent cages.

and yeah, if your doin XC and DH, you need to meet somewhere in the middle as far as the frame. hecklers are nice, but they are flexy. id seriously say go iwith a Santa Cruz Nomad, the Blur Long travel, or something else. either way, head over to [url=http://www.MTBR.com

I ride a Kona Stinky DeeLux and I haul that bitch everywhere. Sure I'm not as fast as the boys who ride their pussy little 20lb bikes but I have a hell of a lot more fun coming back down.

Usually for the wikkid DH trails you gotta ride a bit of XC anyway to get there or to get home again afterwards. If you like jumping and a bit of freeriding then compromise, get a full sus with about 5" front and rear, and get something with quick adjustability so you can lock 'em out for the aggressive climbs and stuff. If you want to get into XC racing then yeah, get a bitchass super light hardtail with like 80mm max on the front but if you wanna have some fun and huck it up a bit, go for something like a Kona Coiler.

I'm running more than 7" on the rear and 200mm on the front, super soft and mantis plush and I still have a wikkid time riding XC, can't go wrong for sure!

It's Kona time...

I agree with the aforementioned freeriders. I roll on a Kona Stinky Primo... with the largest frame Kona makes for a freeride bike. Trust a nigga... get a freeride bike over an XC bike.

If you are looking for a workout, then just raise up the seat, and pedal one of those 50 lb suckers up a trail. That will whip you into shape nasty style, plus you can shred back down.

We gonna whack it til the wheels fall off.

HAHAHAHAHA buddie you make me laugh. shimano does make low end products but they also make some of the best as well.

snap crackle pop

yup yup yup. my bike is almost 50 lbs, and i keep up fine with dudes on 23 lb XC bikes. plus, when we get to the rock gardens (the fun part), they lay off, and i blow right pst um. freeride bikes are sick, but they arnt exactly the right tool for the job. granted, youll get REALLY strong (i rip my chain apart just about every other ride, whichs sucks), and if you ever do jump on a little XC bike, youll have no problem blowin the doors off the XCers. but id still say an a 6 inch bike is perfect. coilers are nice bikes, and are cheap, but the suspension is a OLD ass design (single pivot, linkage actuated shock). and while its tried and true, there are others out there that blow the doors off it. im still still stickin with a VPP bike, its an amazing suspension design, and it pedals soooooo good. plus the short little links equals some of the best lateral ridgidity out there. in fact, msg me on aim, EastCoastStyle05

Going down is way more fun, i dont ride for scenery or bullshit like that i ride to get from point A danger zone to point B semi danger zone as fast as possible and maybe take my mind of skiing for 3 minutes or so.
