Xbox360 red ring question (not how to fix it on my own)

my xbox got the red ring so i'm going through all the shit to get it fixed through microsoft, and i'm just wondering....what exactly does microsoft do to my xbox to fix it? I've heard before that for them its like a 1 minute fix, but i've also heard that with most of them they just dump out the xbox, put in a new one, and ship it back.

so if anyone who has sent theirs in can help, its appreciated. I'm really just curious, so no big deal if no one knows

who know/who cares what they do, all I know is the one I got back has been working for like 8 months, Ive even left on for prolonged amounts of time by accident and it still works perfect...

problem had somethign to do with a chip overheated however.

k it goes like this. Go buy a brand new xbox 360 from Walmart take the internals out from the brand new xbox out and put it into the shell of your defective xbox. so pretty much switch the internals out. Make sure to scratch out serial numbers. There might be tutorials online on how to switch out internals. My friend did it to his and his works fine now. Good luck...

it's like one screw or something, you can buy kits on ebay for like 5 bucks with instructions and spare parts on how to fix it on your own

The RRoD is so easy to fix though. You internals just need more air thats all. Just put some more foam stuff like the stuff already in there and raise it up. Problem solved. Ive fixed like 10 of my friends

Ha forgot to add that after the internals are switched you go and return the xbox with the defective internals to walmart and get a full refund

i just had to sent mine in 3 weeks ago for the red rings and got it back, over this past weekend. They sent a whole new xbox and gave me a free month of live, but i had no problems with the shipping and they paid for it. other than my xbox breaking the process wasnt that bad

So let me understand. You advocate buying an xbox and switching out the parts so you have the one that works. Then returning the bad Xbox so it's someone else's problem?

Sounds to me like I wouldn't like you in real life. I'm not going to take any of your e-Karma away but you just got docked a whole lot of real life karma.

Sure you're stealing from a huge corporation. But how do you think it would be to be that kid who gets your defective Xbox and has to go through a huge headache to return the xbox back to wal-mart and buy a new one? Just how pissed do you think you'd be if that happened to you?

I'm sorry I offended you ... really I am. But really if you trace the problem back to its root, Microsoft caused the original problem/pain because they were supposed to give me a working xbox. And big whoop if someone has to go return their xbox back to Walmart. It's not that difficult.

i got the whole overheating thing, i was just wondering what they did. I'm hoping that for some reason i get a completely new xbox, but i doubt it. Though i have heard some of them cant be fixed so they send a brand new one

And Microsoft is so gracious as to acknowledge they made a mistake and they will send you a prepaid shipping box and have it all back to you in a few weeks. They even throw in a month subscription of Live Gold because they feel bad for doing that to you.

What are you going to do for the kid? More than likely he gets it on his birthday or some shit like that. Great present.

yea i think it would be very disappointing if some younger kid got it for christmas or something and really wanted to play it, then found out he needed to wait at least 2 weeks to play it. Or they just simply return it and get a new one.

actually, i like the idea and found a way to bypass being an ass. If you tell them that it wasn't working from when you first bought it, they should accept the return, and it will be sent back to microsoft as a returned defective product. You get a refurbished xbox, your money back, and microsoft has now been sent back a screwed up xbox

good thought.... my buddy had the same problem so he went to future shop made sure he was very clear on the return policy and bought a new one. Meanwhile he shipped out his busted one, got it fixed, got it back and returned the new one for a full refund, that way, no time lost.

thats a much better way to do it. but seriously, just wait, its usually not that long. im on like my 5th i wanna say. its something to do with the heatsink/fan

exactly. if wal-mart knows the product doesnt work, they will not put it back on their shelves. most likely they will contact microsoft, tell them that one of the units they sold was defective, and wal-mart will get their money back, just like you.

yes. so you can stop hating now kepler. I'm not the only one who makes little kids cry cuz their xbox doesn't work.

yea....i know....

my question was if they send me like, a completely brand new one, or if they just simply fix mine.

first off, kepler you can hop off daave's balls if you want, theres a lot worse shit you can do than delay a kids fun for like 3 hours. plus, fucking wal-mart over is like +real life karma. they do fucked up shit to poor little children.
how would you feel if you were one of wal-mart's poor little children?
to the op:this happened to me. just search "how to fix red ring" on google and some video tutorials should come up. it looks complicated as hell though so i just waited for like 3 weeks, they sent me a box, and fixed it^this seems like your best option

Its happened to me twice and they sent me a brand new one both times but it is a heating problem. so i bought one of these and its been working for a long time now

ha, looking back, i probably shouldn't have included anything about fixing it in the title, even if i said i wasn't going to.

thanks for the advice, but my question was what happens to my xbox once i do send it, whether i get a totally brand new one, or if they just fix my old one

sorry for not meeting your standards, keppy. ill keep this in mind next time we have a disagreement

to op:depends on the problemfor me they just sent my old one back, but they fixed it somehow

my friend got the ring of fire and he tried to fix it on his own it is a pain in the ass im tellin you you did the right thing.he finally decided to get a new one and ot was all good

yea, i'm not particularly...internal electronics savvy you could say. I knew if i tried it, it would just get much much worse so i decided to save myself frustration and a ton of money.

i guess it depends on what error you get cause i got one red ring of death and shipped it to microsoft. I got the same one back because my NS sticker was still on it.

my xbox hadn't up until now.

I'm not anti ps3 or anything either, i've played it before, and i just prefer xbox. And all of my friends have xboxlive so, it makes it a bit more fun when i can play them

yeah, understandable, i was just hoping some of those people who are really into the xbox vs ps3 thing would get mad and start yelling and shit

originally the idea didn't include telling them it was defective, just returning it and having pretty much a brand new one.

This is what i think happens: I think they make you send it in just for proof that it is broken... and then they send you back a brand new one because it probably takes too much time to fix them.

good, i'm really hoping i get a new one because i think mine also might have that problem where part of the disc drive is missing or something, so discs can get scratched. And of course that one costs money to fix, and they only replace games made by microsoft. (the only game this is a real problem with is gta4, and i guess after over 100 hrs of play, the disc can't be expected to work flawlessly)

i'm pretty sure if you give an xbox to walmart and tell them it's defective, they won't just put it back on the shelf.

but, i don't work at walmart so i have no idea what they do when somebody brings back a defective product.

i dont see why you would do that, im from quebec and it took 3weeks before the new xbox came to my house and got 1 month xbox gold free. so anyone from usa will probably have it back 2weeks after and i dont understand why you would fuck someone over to get away with your problem.

alright, we'll make a deal.

i will throw away my xbox360, if you send me (in cash) $750. (Need to buy the console, then replace all my games)

or if you find me a way of acquiring a ps3 and 6 games for less than the cost of fixing my xbox (which is free)

sorry man, but i've looked into the ps3, its good, but it just doesn't suit me. All my friends play on xboxlive so i'd rather keep playing with them
