does anyone know a lot about these two systems. which one is better? How many controllers can each system have? backwards compatibility. I want to know which one is better.

SEE YOU NEXT WEDNESDAY

Xbox 360 will have wireless controllers, currently i believe it is only 2 player system, but they might change that before the release i believe. Xbox 360 will be like a current modded xbox with enhanced graphics and speeds obviously. it has a menu where you can play music, watch videos, and do anything with media basiaclly. i think its going to cost $249-299

PS3 is going to be 20 times more powerful than PS2 i beleive. its going to be the most expensive gaming system to hit the markets ever at $449. basically you looking at game type and what layout you like more. I havent checked up on the systems lately so some things might have cahnged but as of a few months ago these were the stats

xbox 360 all the way..youll be able to play on live for free...tehres 3 processors in it, with a specially built graphics card..its gonna be intense, up to 4 wireless controllers and 2 wired...you can plug in your ipod and upload your music in your xbox...itll be cheap...itll come with a webcam and a mic to for video chatting...man, its gonna be the best...and MacIntosh is building the processors for it...lol

no way PS3 is gonna be better...especially pricewise

yeah was about to say that unless they do some major things before its released ampt 3 wont be as good as everyone hoped

i was also talking to some guys about it at best buy. apparently there will be two versions.

the higher end and much more expensive model will be around $400-600. it will have an extra harddrive (or a bigger one) so when you rent/borrow games from your friends you can just copy the game onto the hard-drive and play it whenever you want without the disk. the smaller one will work just like the current xbox (as in, you play off the disk). also like stated before, it will have wireless controllers, you will beable to play xbox live for free (and your always connected). in addition to all that, it will pretty much replace your entire home-entertainment system. being able to play CDs/DVDs/Games as well as being able to connect to all surroundsound systems (which all that isnt that much different from the current xbox).

i havent read much on the ps3, but ill get an 360 over a ps3 anyday (mainly because i like xbox games way better then ps games). i just hope they dont ruin amped 3, like the article said (read my sig).

as a side note, i read somewhere that the new nintendo system will beable to play any previous game made by nintendo (from any system, although im not sure how that would work).

Microsoft Announces Xbox 360 Price for Canada: Starts at $399.99 CDN

Feature-packed system brings high-definition gaming to the masses this holiday season.

Toronto, ON — Aug. 17, 2005 — Ending weeks of speculation about which upcoming video game platform will give gamers the most bang for their buck, today at the German Games Convention, Microsoft Corp. revealed that consumers can get their hands on Xbox 360™ — the most powerful and feature-packed next-generation video game and entertainment system — for as little as $399.99 CDN starting this holiday season. For gamers who want to experience the ultimate digital entertainment thrill ride, Microsoft also announced a model with hundreds of dollars worth of accessories for $499.99 CDN, giving consumers the definitive entertainment experience at an unbelievable value right out of the box.

The Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Core System — along with an impressive lineup of high-definition game titles from the world’s best publishers and developers — will make their debut in North America, Europe and Japan in time for this Christmas holiday, several months ahead of the competition. everyone hated the xbox controller when it first game out. and ps3 will have cordless controllers as well. you can get cordless ps2 controllers too. it will be much better than xbox...i've seen and compared the gameplay and ps3 takes the cake.

Mac processor in the 360??? Are you retarded? This is microsoft and mac we're talking about. they hate each other. anyway mac processors aren't even that good. mac is switching to intel processor in their computers. fool

ps3. like 7 wireless controls, built in ethernet port, for also free online gaming(free on ps2 as well, not xbox) i've checked up on some game screenshots and the graphics looked sick. controller looks kinda wierd, but can't judge it until i try it

Anyway, a gas station we pass. We got gas, and ran off to get grub.It was a nice little pub in the middle on nowhere. Anywhere woulda been better. I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em, Ali had the fruit punch.

your a idiot

you think macintosh is going to make processors for microsoft???

check it. i grew up a fuckin screw up, got introduced to the game, got a ounce, and fuckin blew up.

the processor in the xbox 360 (and I think in the ps3 as well, but not quite sure) is known as a power pc chip (PPC). This is the same kind of processor that is currently in the macintosh hardware. The development units that xbox 360 developers are using are in fact apple powermac g5's running a modified version of windows NT.

-

oh and apple doesn't make the ppc chip they just use them. Apple gets thiers from I think IBM and motorola, but I don't know who is making the chip for the xbox

-

^ i think they get them from motorola but they are going to switch to ibm processors

Below are the specs from Sony's press release regarding the PS3's GPU.

RSX GPU

550 MHz

Independent vertex/pixel shaders

51 billion dot products per second (total system performance)

300M transistors

136 "shader operations" per clock

The interesting ALU performance numbers are 51 billion dot products per second (total system performance), 300M transistors, and more than twice as powerful as the 6800 Ultra.

The 51 billions dot products per cycle were listed on a summary slide of total graphics system performance and are assumed to include the Cell processor. Sony's calculations seem to assume that the Cell can do a dot product per cycle per DSP, despite not having a dot product instruction.

However, using Sony's claim, 7 dot products per cycle * 3.2 GHz = 22.4 billion dot products per second for the CPU. That leaves 51 - 22.4 = 28.6 billion dot products per second that are left over for the GPU. That leaves 28.6 billion dot products per second / 550 MHz = 52 GPU ALU ops per clock.

It is important to note that if the RSX ALUs are similar to the GeForce 6800 ALUs then they work on vector4s, while the Xbox 360 GPU ALUs work on vector5s. The total programmable GPU floating point performance for the PS3 would be 52 ALU ops * 4 floats per op *2 (madd) * 550 MHz = 228.8 GFLOPS which is less than the Xbox 360's 48 ALU ops * 5 floats per op * 2 (madd) * 500 MHz= 240 GFLOPS.

With the number of transistors being slightly larger on the Xbox 360 GPU (330M) it's not surprising that the total programmable GFLOPs number is very close.

The 6800 Ultra has 16 pixel pipes, 6 vertex pipes, and runs at 400 MHz. Given the RSX's 2x better than a 6800 Ultra number and the higher frequency of the RSX, one can roughly estimate that it will have 24 pixel shading pipes and 4 vertex shading pipes (fewer vertex shading pipes since the Cell DSPs will do some vertex shading). If the PS3 GPU keeps the 6800 pixel shader pipe co-issue architecture which is hinted at in Sony's press release, this again gives it 24 pixel pipes* 2 issued per pipe + 4 vertex pipes = 52 dot products per clock in the GPU.

If the RSX follows the 6800 Ultra route, it will have 24 texture samplers, but when in use they take up an ALU slot, making the PS3 GPU in practice even less impressive. Even if it does manage to decouple texture fetching from ALU co-issue, it won't have enough bandwidth to fetch the textures anyways.

For shader operations per clock, Sony is most likely counting each pixel pipe as four ALU operations (co-issued vector+scalar) and a texture operation per pixel pipe and 4 scalar operations for each vector pipe, for a total of 24 * (4 + 1) + (4*4) = 136 operations per cycle or 136 * 550 = 74.8 GOps per second.

Given the Xbox 360 GPU's multithreading and balanced design, you really can't compare the two systems in terms of shading operations per clock. However, the Xbox 360's GPU can do 48 ALU operations (each can do a vector4 and scalar op per clock), 16 texture fetches, 32 control flow operations, and 16 programmable vertex fetch operations with tessellation per clock for a total of 48*2 + 16 + 32 + 16 = 160 operations per cycle or 160 * 500 = 80 GOps per second.

LETS SEE YOU MAKE A COMPUTER LIKE THIS FOR $400
