X Games Slopestyle Course

Check out the latest Jon Video Blog for reference...

Looks like they decided to build it for the spectators rather than the athletes. I can definitely understand what Jon is saying about safety on the channel gap. Hope the riders can still throw down which I'm sure they will.

agree with jon but I don't really understand why this channel gap is more dangerous than the one at the US OPEN back in the days or those in photoshoots. That must be a fucking scary feature tho.I'm talking about the channel gap that Mickael sw 10s to win the US OPEN

Hey guys. Just arrived in Aspen yesterday. Haven't had a chance to check out the course yet but here's what I've been hearing:
Travis Rice didn't make the transfer gap in practice. I can understand Jon's concern when arguably the most talented snowboarder in the world isn't making it. I've also heard there's too many features.
However, NS's favorite son, Matt Walker reported last night that the course was, "sick and super fast."
I'll talk to a few more of the boys today and see if I can get some direct quotes for later.

im sure it because the hit comes so fast the riders cant adjust in time to hit it properly/ well or with confidence.

it's that, and just in general the one at the open was far better made with wider take offs and landings and more space to set up for it. and also it was the last feature of that course in vail, not in the middle, where you have to deal with carving back into the final jump like jossi said.

If I'm correct the riders don't have to hit the gap if they don't want to.. so I don't understand the problem. If they're worried about their safety then they shouldn't hit the gap and just hit the jump? If you want to be number one in the X(TREME) Games I would assume you be willing to get a little gnarlier than everyone else. I think it would be highly unfair to the riders able to stomp the gap to take it out for those who are uncomfortable with it.

Bingo. We forget sometimes that X is a huge marketing tool for these sports and specifically X is generated for the TV fan base. Honestly people watching are looking for the wow factor more than double grabs and to get that they have to build (or believe they need to build) huge kickers and obstacles that are dangerous. X is the biggest winter event of the year and every rider who wants to win has to bring their A game and take it to the next level. Sure their may be some fine tuning to get the jumps, rails and gaps perfected and a little safer but Jossi said it best in jon olsson's video blog that it will just separate the men from the boys.

yes but if seperating the men from the boys means that some competitors might fall onto their necks like that snowboarder (actually it was a girl so it would be women from girls here) something is definitely not right. i mean she didnt even try to go over the gap but caught an edge on the landing and kind of fell into it. the biggest problem might be that the landings are way too narrow

I have to dissagree with Jon. The channel must stay. Its a risky sport and that what comps can do to you:injure you. If you dont feel safe about the transfer, dont do it, stick with the jump. Accidents do happen in comps, you have to live with it if you wanna compete. If everything was perfect and 100% safe, take out the hole park.

Keep the channel

you sir are fucking retarded. jumps that big need to be safely made or else lives are at risk end of discussion.

dont agreee with you at all man. sure it may be cool and shit but thats not how the slope course should be. it shouldnt challenge and scare the skiers (well maybe a little) but not clearing a jump or a rail should not be on the mind of the rider. the course should flow and be easy to gain/ditch speed as needed. not a course where you have to land and tuck every fucking time. that just looks so dumb.

^The above two arguments would be valid if they had no choice but to hit the gap. But they do have a choice.

Alex_G, wipe the sand your of your vagina. Do you have to throw insults around in every discussion? God you're a bitch.

seams like every year the slopestyle course isn't up to par. from speed issues, to jump size issues, to layout... You'd think that ESPN would have figured it out by now eh? When will they learn?

if the channel gap was in the big-air comp it wouldnt be a problem because they would have all the time they need to set up their trick.

but when its in the middle of the course and you mess up on the feature before you hardly have any time to correct yourself which can easily result in falls or injuries.

they probably think theyre all travis pastranas and have biggest balls on earth

but that chennel gap made winter x slopestyle better for sure.its gonna be better for audience

last year was perfect with the exception that there were NO FUCKING RAILS just a trap box and a cannon box

the guys who designed the slope course for the second stop of the dew tour should have been hired to construct this course

maybe they should just put some mats and pads in strategic areas around the gap. I don't think it should be completely removed, it's not fair to all the competitors.

This is really dissapointing. look liked they really dropped the ball this year. This shouldnt happen at the xgames out of all places. I doubt will be seeing much progression in terms of tricks with a course like this. if the riders arent happy or feel safe i dont think we will see anything super innovative new or big. But you never know.

Maybe they should get snow park technologies to build them, that dew tour course was probably the nicest i have ever seen

oh and kinda off topic but canon boxes are soooo hot right now. I think my hill is setting one up....YAY!!

its the x games of course people will be throwing down! its just that a handful are gonna die in the process, no big deal, should look good on tv...

oh well if they do thats weird because they dew tour had nothing but compliments and the jumps were soooo nice.

You're completely missing the problem.

Look at a picture of the feature. There are two distinctly different landings on either side of the channel. Whether you gap the channel or not, your landing on a cat's width wide landing.

When you hit a huge jump, even straight on, you tend to drift left or right depending which way you are spinning/carving. Say whatever you want, but it is unquestionably an unecessarily dangerous feature.

You can build huuuuuge crazy features that are still safe, but this one is just sketchy as shit. It is photogenic as a motherfucker though. I'd like to see people float slow (low risk) stylish tricks over it.

yeah i dont usually say stuff like this but what kind of pro skier cant consistently clean a DFD? i think its sick to finally see a dfd in a slopestyle

that jump doesn't look that sketchy from the pics, at least, as far as width goes. i've hit channel gap with that witdh in take off and landing. but setup time from the jump going into it is a whole other issue. if the channel is so poor that it requires either saftey tricks into it or over it, it will be lame.

Reading PK's description of the travis rice incident made me really want to see footage.

"And Travis is superman or maybe more like

spider-man, He went straight into the wall pushed himself out of the wall

did a 360 stomped the shit out of it in the middle of the dead flat gap,

rode away like a pimp."

These guys are bitching about the rails way to much. I liked Colby's opinion of the course. It looks fun. I'm happy they didnt just put in stock stuff, like that butter pad, that looks fun. Sure the channel gap is a little dangerous but they are professional athletes and should be able to rise tot he occasion.
