so it looks like its going from 2 a year (1 summer, 1 winter) to 6 a year. What do you all think?(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3qieV2u938)
andESPN, the leading action sports content provider and creator of the X Games, today announced a significant milestone in its long-term plans to expand the X Games on a global basis. Beginning in 2013, ESPN will produce six world-class X Games events around the world – two in the U.S. and four outside the U.S. ESPN is putting significant resources and focus behind this push for international expansion and will bring the most prestigious action sports competition to cities and fans around the world.ESPN will conduct a formal bid process to determine the three new X Games host cities, which will join the current events in Los Angeles, Aspen and Tignes, France (where ESPN is partnered with Canal+). Cities will be selected in 2012 for a three-year agreement and will work with ESPN to produce the events.A total of 130 hours of live TV coverage across the six X Games events on ESPN networks in the U.S. and around the world will be supplemented by coverage on digital platforms, including a year-round action sports website. The top priority of the X Games will continue to be to spotlight the world’s best action sports athletes in BMX, Skateboard, Moto X, and Rally Car Racing at the X Games; and Skiing, Snowboard and Snowmobile at the Winter X Games. Each X Games event will take on its own distinguishing character that will set it apart from the others, including the introduction of new sports and cultural elements based on the locations themselves. In addition, the X Games will continue to showcase and celebrate action sports competition while also highlighting the artistic and social elements inherent in the action sports lifestyle.“We are incredibly excited to take the X Games to the next level,” said Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president, programming and Global X Games. “While we have produced events under the X Games banner outside the U.S. for many years, these four new X Games events will be of the same size and stature as the Los Angeles and Aspen events.”Pro skateboarder and legend Tony Hawk, an integral part of the X Games as an iconic athlete and TV analyst, said, “It has been incredible to see the X Games grow from its relatively underground inception in 1995, to a thriving global competition circuit today. Our sports have benefited greatly from the positive exposure over the years, and I am proud to have watched it all evolve since the beginning.”Since the X Games began in 1995, the franchise has evolved into a recognized, global brand as the event has grown and expanded its reach into consumer products, theatrical releases and ESPN.com/action – the definitive site for action sports fans. Over the past decade, the X Games and Winter X Games have enjoyed increased attendance as well as coverage and ratings/usage on TV and other ESPN platforms. The most recent X Games and Winter X Games each set attendance records, pushing all-time attendance to more than two million spectators. This expansion will be the first of its kind for the franchise in terms of size, scope and scale, but since 1998 the X Games has successfully organized smaller events, qualifiers and demonstrations in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Philippines and Dubai.

They already have 4, not that big of an increase. (Winter X, Winter X Euro, etc)

4 i guess if you include xgames asia if they still even do that. summer-x, winter-x and winter-x euro) and only 2 of them are televised, with poor slots at that.

Now we will have 6 televised x-games events with hopefully a little bit more priority than 1am time slots.

pretty decent increase if you ask me. for athletes, exposure and us.

This is pretty lame in my opinion. It really takes away from the appeal, hype, etc. Over-saturation of a good thing.
And besides, there are already so many competitions that athletes struggle to do them all AND film segments. now what are they gonna do? dedicate their whole season to Comps? fuck that, i like ski movies.

shut the hell up. This will increase viewers of skiing snowboarding and all the other sports causing them to get bigger. How the heck is that a bad thing? I swear some people try and find the negatives in everything.

another reason why skiing should follow more in skateboardings footsteps. you dont need to make a movie every year, take a couple years and give riders the opportunity to make hammer segments along with still getting to do competitions (if thats what they want to do). Stay Gold took like 5 years to film, That's It That's All took 2.5 years to film, nobody hates on those movies.

you know who is stoked.

Somehow, someone needs to combine the x and dew tour events into a surfing style world tour, that would make skiing competitions so much sicker. I know the AFP is sort of trying to do that, but nobody really gives a shit about the AFP and it needs to be more integrated into the events. Six would probably be enough to do this though 8-10 would probably be better.

Copied from another recent thread:

"I think the cause is important to note, but whats more important is what freeskiing should do about it. In an age where the gap between pro's and beginners is SO huge and where it takes years and years of dedicated training and gobs of money just to have any chance of winning a major contest... whats the point if we're just going to see every skier do robot-perfect tricks in every film and in every contest. Seeing doubles for the first time was amazing, I was sincerely blown away by Jon's Kangaroo Flip... but the magic is gone now that they're 'easy' and there are unknowns throwing them and posting them in the video section on NS. Simpy put, they're not as fun to watch. Triples are exhausting my fun meter even faster that doubles. Cool at first, impressive as fuck, but now after seeing everyone start to stomp them... meh?

Homogenization produces dullness. Just like in biology, you have one species to take off and overrun everything else like crazy, it'll tip the ecosystem and kill diversity. In contrast, some of the coolest places on Earth are hugely diverse, with millions of different species providing crazy and immensely interesting forms of life, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS GIVEN A CHANCE. Same should work for skiing, I say. If homogeneous tricks and skiers are all that this sport rewards, that is what it will mostly create. If that appeals to you... well, you're in luck I guess, we'll have all the precision and monotony of aerial skiing or moguls. And thats what Freeskiing set out to become, right?

May I propose an alternative. Reward style. Provide it a spotlight, support the skiers that are doing something different, and slowly the sport will start rewarding it. Its your choice who in the skiing world gets popular, and that popularity sends skiers into the spotlight where sponsors and film companies pick them up. You decide who you see in next years movies, you decide what events are cool and deserve coverage. Support what you really want to see."

i don't know why people hate on sal so much. well i do but i don't think he's that bad really. plus i saw some show where he was surfing and he was actually pretty nice at it

i know you werent making fun of him btw hoodratz

hahaha i really like sal. he doesn't necessarily call trick properly, but he's always so fucking stoked to announce events and i love it. his hats make me giggle.

seems like too much. i feel they had it right when they just had winter and summer x. keeps the hype up.

more money is going into the sport = more money for the ones who are really putting their bodies on the line. THAT'S ALL. all you fucks who sit around and do nothing should only be in support for what's better for the athletes who are providing you with inspiration and entertainment regardless of how park skiing is being portrayed to appeal to the weekend warriors. i mean there's enough room in skiing for that "underground" scene to still exist... you fucking morons.

nice promotion video

but yea more exposure...more kids into the sport...more money resorts will spend on their parks and thats all I really care about

at first i was like THATS SO FUCKIN SICK! but then i realized that it makes THE xgames less special.its kinda like if you had the summer and winter olympics every year, its not as cool.
but it will be sick to watch, even if it is pretty much the same as dew tour, but with big air.

shit i completely read your reply wrongly. i thought you were pissed at the idea, but you were mad at the people hating on it
