X games big air

I could be wrong but is X games big air going to be fun to watch? I am not hating on any of the athletes or their tricks. I am just watching from the outside. I see the list of athletes and already suspect that it is going to be a double flip contest. Are people going to be stoked when everyone's doing similar tricks? I feel like people may loose intrest. I know I can't watch a big air contest anymore. I understand you have to do the trick that wins but something needs to change.

After this year what is going to happen? Do we really want to see triples or spins over 1440?

X games rollerblade vert was going crazy at one point and just died. Was it because the same 10 people were in it every year and doing simliar tricks?

i think the x games would benefit form a rail jam. nuff said.

just leave the cameras live running for an hour or two jam, and have running commentary going on whose doing whats and all that.

how about a big air-rail jam...let's see if they can double flip to pretzel...then I'll be impressed

or give them some guns and they have to shoot clay pigeons as they're jumping...might be a liability issue there though

Dude, every year the same old discussion. 2006: "oh my, everyone is doing sw 10, they should be doing stylish 180s" 2009: "already suspect that it is going to be a double flip contest.".
The thing is, the hardest tricks are similiar. Face it. And just look at what happened at king of style, no one would say they all did the same trick there. And big air last year: double front, kangaroo, sw dub 12 and some weird olsson thing. No one did the same trick. Why do you assume they will this year?

NO..

Rail jams are for small contests...

Xgames is meant to be the next level.. We need to see like a 45ft gap to rail.. like the megaramp contest from xgames summer..

That's what I'm saying. There's a lot more variety now. Misty 10s, double corks, blunt rolls, olsson flips, kangaroos etc so much more to choose from than straight up spinning. And in all the fall comps they had to do a stylish trick as well...
And while I do agree smooth 3s etc are nice, they will never win against a more difficult trick. And whose to say the doubles aren't stylish? That is of course totally subjective, but as far as holding grabs, keeping composure and stomping landings I'd say the best skiers do some pretty stylish doubles

never did i say a 3 should be in a big air comp, and if you actually read my last post you would see where i said there is variety being thrown but no variety in the top 3 placing. only in the KOS they had to do a stylish trick as well, watch the berlin comp if you want to really understand.

I am not saying they don't have style with their dubs or that a 720 should win. I am saying that we needs things like laurent doing sw 7s to the bottom and charles doing sw left 10s for variety. It is a contest but people who don't know skiing need to see everything. In reality X games big air is just a "show" and outsiders need to see skiing as a whole; not the same thing every time every contest.

don't get me wrong but nowadays dub cork are super steezy but the thing is they almost all look the same except fewsi'm just tired to see dub cork 12 mute but it's freestyle for my point of vew i would prefer to see guys like vanular who are doing super technical tricks like butter which are more technical than a dub
i hope that tj will get his dub 12 mute to reverse tail

i agree but as long as there are people just in it to win those double shits will always exist and people will be pushing harder for that extra half rotation because of the judges letting them.

i agree soo much. the sport will die if everyone is doing the same tricks. and it will be borig to watch.

That's true. And I'm bored of everybody doing dub cork 12 mute too. But still people are switching it up. I think wester tried a double 14 tail in Berlin and olsson tried the truckdriver. I think it's just that mutes are the easiest, so when they get more comfy doublecorking/flippin they'll make some new variations. But that's just speculation of course
And to the guy above. They had the style/techy trick thing at berlin and zurich too. saw some pretty sick stylish shit there (sw rodeo bow/arrow!!)
Aaand it's freakin awesome that you pro dudes are making your contribution to these kind of discussions seeing as you're the guys who're in the actual comps. Makes this seem a little less pointless

I agree. I don't see the fascination with double flips, to me, they're starting to look a lot like aerials and big spins are starting to look like figure-skaters doing grabs. Hopefully people will get the hint, but I think the real problem is with the judging, and the majority of the audience. Most people don't see edits and movies everyday of someone somewhere doing a sw 14 or dub 12 or some variation of a double flip. To them it's X-TREEM no matter what. Hopefully that is changing, (if anyone remembers last year when Simon Dumont won the big air against Jacob Wester.) but it probably won't change very fast, but I hope that eventually, people will come to their senses and start doing more interesting looking tricks, as opposed to the ones that are just plain crazy.

ya, it's gonna be another dub cork shitshow like the early season contests like freestyle.ch and shit. I remember watching the vids and thinking, wow, i could've watched 10 seconds of that whole video and it would've been the same as if i had seen the whole thing. no hate intended, dub corks are sick, and the athletes doing them are fuckin heros, but in my opinion it's boring as fuck when you keep seeing the same trick over and over and over again.

they should definately throw vanular in the big air comp. vanular is the definition of entertainment.

Something like laurent's switch 7 screamin seamen shifty taken to the bottom of the big air is 10 times as sick as a dub cork.

i think we all need to revisit hornbecks 2nd post because some of u are headed off track.
by the way your spot on with that post hornbeck

I'm so fucking sick of seeing the same dubs this year. Ya they may be tech and look good but everyone is doing them. I'm so glad Bdog is in xgames slope. He actually has tech and good looking shit without hucking himself. We need more Hornbecks, Ahmets, Casabons, Delormes, vanulars, and Lolo's.

They should make an absolutely huge kicker. Something like 'Big Bertha'. It would make techincal tricks like dubs extremely difficult and the athletes might want to throw less tech trick but with tons of style. I know that they are limited by how big they can make by the space they've got but it would be much better to see a huge variety of trick on a huge scale.
It needs to be a Big Air comp rather than another chance to hit the last slopestyle course kicker. Like I said something similar to the set up in La Clusaz with the Candide Invitationals....

would have been dope to see a lineup with the likes of vanular's nose butters, gangnier's grabs, favres screamins, casabon's style plus your usual dub crew. That would have been a well rounded show, but sadly I don't foresee that as the future direction of x games...

more ppl should go in this direction, like casabon trowing a sick switch 10 japical shifty in king of style, if i remeber right.. and vanular butter. and so on. 1 run style 1 run technical. that would be fun.
u guys remeber i tihnk the secund JOI. Schiller and dumont agreed to have a 540 comp. they were head to head and both threw down some of the sickest 5's. that was fun to watch!

I know exactly what you mean... For past like 5-6 years its been all about sw tens and that was just as boring to watch. Its definitely sucks to see a field of like 20 people all doing the exact same trick.
I feel like it would be sick if it was like a trick battle where the judges or who ever would just call out a rotation every battle like 3,5,7 or wtv and then 2 guys would see who could do that trick the sickest.

The problem is that big air is getting to a point where the vast majority of people can't relate to it anymore. I've been skiing since I could walk, yet I have no idea how hard a double cork 12 is. The only reason I can relate better to a dub cork 12 more than the average aerials triple flipping thing is because I try to grab my skis in the air and I've never hit an aerials jump.

But most people who watch X Games have never hit a jump over 20 feet, have never tried to spin a 720, and don't know what it's like to be upside down in the air. They just can't relate at all, and I worry that big air freeskiing will go the way of sky surfing - a really cool sport, but nobody can relate to it, and therefore nobody cares about it.

At X Games big air last year, people in the crowd were ecstatic over Dumont's double front, and they were quite literally yelling at Jon to "stop doing gay spins." Not kidding.

I like the format of the freestyle.ch/.berlin comps where each skier gets 3 jumps and two scores, one based on style, the other based on technical difficulty. It keeps things interesting.

i wanna see more tech stuff, as nsers we probably would all enjoy/appreciate that but remember the average non-skier/gaper would much rather see a 50' front flip than a really tech trick that you can't see what the hell is going unless you really concentrate -
espn wants the crowd pleasers like the superman frontflippers of this world than the more techy skills of the likes of twall and the OP! i would personally like to see the more tech stuff, but most people watching will be just general sports fans who will just want to be entertained.... how many non-skiers enjoy watching travelling circus over watching someone just hucking themselves? my bet is not many......

honestly im not a big fan of doubles, i mean dub corks with blunts look rediculous but i'd rather see more floaty, stylish, less technical tricks. But i guess if your lookiing to progress eventualy you have to start doing doubles

they can still save the freestyle aspect of skiing. what they're doing now with all the dubs is just like aerials yeah but as long as there adding things into it like shiftys, switching grabs half way through etc. theyll keep the freestyle aspect of it in. even though im not a huge fan of dubs if you dont dub you wont make it into big air.

I don't think that this is a new problem with Big Air's. For 3 years in a row all we would see in big airs is switch 10's, then the double became more prominent. I don't think this will ever change unless there is a complete change in what the judges are looking for. At least we can be happy this year that it is not a text vote event and there is more athletes in it, which will hopefully drive the athletes to be a bit more unique in their choice of tricks and not just shoot for crowd pleasers.
