X Games Aftermath...

i said this in the other thread but the live stream was to engage with the under 18 crowd and the over 18 crowd hated it, not surprising but change is pretty difficult for anyone. nobody watching the live stream wants to watch some 5 minute made for tv package about how david wise has 3 kids.

Ya how about neither and just broadcast the event.

Didn't go to any of the events in person tho this year despite living in the valley but I saw some of their practice laps when I was lapping in the mornings. Only downside this year was the lack of Wendy's as a sponsor. Last year they gave me a key fob for free frostys for a year and some french fry gloves, and in 19/20 they had some good free breakfast burgers. This year it was just free monster energy drinks and since my name isn't Kyle I wasn't hyped. Definitely don't feel any of hype for Xgames like you describe feeling when you were younger but I'm hyped for them to tear all their shit down and open the course to the pubic.

how much do they push down/downsize the course before opening to public?

They don't downsize anything in that park because we have jumps/rails that are very similar in size in snowmass as well. They change some of the rails later in the season though for some competitions but its very minor changes and stays relatively the same. Last year iirc the only change they made was in March and all they did was removing a little fense that you gap over in between a rail(pictured below with the Jeep logo on it). They just gotta remove all the jeeps, camera scaffolding, and any other xgames owned stuff then it's open. We also will get more rails added to an area that's behind the big air jump and above the half pipe so it's definitely something to look forward to.

that's awesome. do they open the big air jump as is too?

if so how's the speed for it/how is it in general? same question for the rest of the jumps actually

Hi there. I think if you watch this clip at 10:00 you will notice that with his left hand he never grabs the ski. He just wraps his entire hand behind it and pull his ski with his fist. Enjoy and have fun.

I'm not sure about the big air jump actually I know they wont knock it down but they may make it so you don't need as much speed because at the Xgames the riders start on a platform that's about 30 feet above the snow so they have enough speed.

I remember 3 years ago they kept it up but I wasn't good enough to hit it so I couldnt tell you if they changed it and last year it was just the final jump of the slopestyle course so nothing changed on it. You need a lot of speed on the slopestyle course on a nice day its about 1 speed check per jump but you are barely speed checking really. I feel like all the jumps in the past kinda set you up for inversions so you gotta keep good pressure on your shins which feels fucking crazy at the speed you will hit the kicker... definitely a lot of adrenaline. The final jump last year was intense but the landing is so big it feels fine like you would never have enough speed to fully over clear it from what you will get properly doing the jumps before it in the slopestyle course. You could also easily practice it because of how they had the run in for the big air jump last year.

I think it may be different this year though it seemed like you could go a bit slower on everything and still land okay, or at least that's what Ahall made it seem like. I do plan to hit that big air jump though once I can get some tracks into it, so Ill report back on that one.

It really feels surreal when you drop in on the slopestyle course at 9am when its freshly groomed and empty, it feels almost fake how perfect everything looks sometimes. There's also almost never anyone side jumping anything because there's 300 feet of flat then 15-40 feet of uphill to get to the start of the course which acts as a good deterrent. A lot of the locals either aren't interested in participating in slopestyle or prefer Snowmass so it often feels very empty.

sick sick sick, you hit all the points i was wondering about dude thanks. ive hit plenty of big jumps but the closest ive come to the x course is the dew tour course at mt snow when they opened it. like you said, pretty damn quiet and surreal in there by yourself, and yeah basically 0-1 speed checks toward the end between jumps

and yeah that was one of my questions-- whether those beautiful huge steep landings help keep things manageable

def let me know if you hit the B I G A I R jump dude, thanks

I didnt watch it but im fucking outraged

X Games was much exactly what I expected with the former CEO of Twitch running the show for the first time. Word on the street is that there's been a lot of talk at MSP Sports Capital and X Games this week about whether the event should be aimed at the younger crowd (similar to this year, but hopefully better executed), or whether it should actually be aimed at the 30-50 crowd who has a nostalgic investment in the X Games. Pretty interesting take.

On another note, the technical broadcast issues after the first day were pretty surprising.

Hyped for the riders and things that went down. The broadcast and presentation was downright horrible. If it's going to be aimed at kids just fucking throw it on Nickelodeon like they do with playoff football games to try and be "hip" and "relatable" to the kids. I bet some dickwad who wears a blazer and jeans came up this idea.

This is also what happens when you hire people in marketing who never even stepped foot on a pair of skis and also never worked in the ski industry.

Its called Knuckle "Huck" you don't need to butter to win it. He did a fuckin switch double backflip off a knuckle he deserved the win lol

Agreed. I also feel like people lose sight of the fact that for events like that, and X Games in general, the "crowd pleaser" factor is huge.

His thumb doesn’t go over the ski to actually grab anything as far as I can tell. He’s holding his pole and pushing his ski.

Bro u made me rewatch that, tf you on he clearly grabs that? you can't fucking wrap a thumb twhen that's the only thing holding the pole jackass.

So you agree? You just said he didn’t grab shit, he was holding his pole. Pressing your closed hand against a ski isn’t a grab.

that being said, dude stomped the piss out of the trick and locked his fist against the ski longer than many actually grab. I’m just saying I’m surprised the judges don’t care if you actually grab

Semantic bullshit, any person with common sense would count that as a grab. In my opinion as long as you get a lock on the ski and are able to hold it in a position that's a grab, you don't need to fucking wrap ur claws around it perfectly. Watch any slvsh game and they're giving good grab calls on wayyy more edge of the line then this.

Ya, you can grab a ski without thumbs, you do it with your finger, which he clearly didn’t do either.

and it’s not semantics. It’s called a grab for a reason, you grab your ski. Not your boot. Not your binding. Not by pushing your closed hand against your ski. You GRAB it.

Also, you can see homie open up to grab it but not get it but he needed to set something to future spin so he just committed to the closed hand push.

Don't you think that the hardest tricks should be rewarded though? Also he did them clean af thats style imo

To be honest, I would not say that his tricks were the hardest. He was very clean and consistent, which is also why he won. But I think some of the guys could do the exact same tricks. Straight flips are just not something I consider as true knucklehuck spirit.

Flips are kinda on the edge for me, but a Barani is definitely a freestyle trick. Even though it's a straight flip with a late 180.

Some of his flips are more like gymnastics type shit. Huge respect to Jesper, so talented. But I know he can do the "real" knuckle huck tricks-

Flips aren’t freestyle but a barani is? That’s straight gymnastics and so much easier than a flip.

knuckle huck is for butters. Any thing else is the equivalent of doing backflips over a rail during a rail jam

Dunno where the Barani movement has begun for skiing (it's a diving trick/technique originally) but quite a few of the OG pros huck them every now and then. Definitely a harder trick than a flip in my books.

Where does the X-Games state that Knuckle HUCK is for butters and why does every other rider do something else than a pure butter?

It's ok for you to feel like it's supposed to be a butter show because you like butters, but that doesn't make it a butter competition. If it was a butter competition it would be called like one and especially judged like one.

StoneyMcBlaze, Yung Gravy, and some kooks chilling in fur coats and timberlands? You know this isn't what this is about dude don't play.

pretty sure one or both of the mitranis actually are/were good snowboarders tho? my old snowboarder buddies were friends with them from irl shredding and i think i remember them being legit

also i feel like i'm not relating to a lot of what you guys are saying and it's because i watched everything on tv and it sounds like the stream coverage was different. in that case that's too bad, honestly the tv coverage was fine imo. it's like NS, there's some really good shit there (e.g. historic big air event) so don't get hung up on the wack stuff
