X Games Aftermath...

So, It's all done. What was good, what was shitty? Curious on peoples takes.

I didn't like some of the judging especially on women's snowboard slope with flailing tricks getting scored higher than style. Also honestly was never a fan of kelly sildaru and thought of her as what I hated now of even snowboarding slope. Throwing shitty pencil steez higher rotations was valued wayyyyyy too high against actual style on lower rotations. When she'd set milestones spinning 9's or whatever they were trash looking in my opinion. Luckily I missed out on all the weird influencer content this X cause that sounded fucking horrible.

What were your gripes with this x or xgames in general?

When I was a kid it was my favorite thing. When winter X came out it was a game changer. I don't have nearly the passion for it now. I'm not sure if it's getting older, the ridiculous tricks and semi alienation of people. Maybe both? I don't care nearly as much about it or feel such a connection.

Do younger people feel that rabid attachment to it? or was that just a different era in a bygone time?

I love xgames and try to watch every event but it’s a bit stale when all your favorite skiers drop out or aren’t invited to an event (men’s slope) or you aren’t familiar with the competitors (sorry superpipe). I still look forward to big air finals every year and the women’s events are just as fun as the men’s now. Have only been watching live since 2020 but I enjoy the event, though it could definitely be better.

edit: xgames is also the big air event where everyone tries new tricks so that makes it better

Jesper knew exactly how to get the judges on his dick, won knuckle huck cause he’s a disney princess.

i thought X was sick this year, what i saw at least

the roster? fire.

men's big air was absolute INSANITY (seriously watch it if you haven't), and megan oldham did the first women's triple 14 and it was sick too, not an ugly huck at all

did you see that monster commercial they kept playing? literally the best commercial i've ever seen on tv (all the ads for Sammy's YUP were welcome too)

also shout out to tom wallisch because i don't know if anybody else wouldve been able to keep up at yesterday's big air, he was ON IT

Its called Knuckle "Huck" you don't need to butter to win it. He did a fuckin switch double backflip off a knuckle he deserved the win lol

Personally thought it was a good year for xgames, besides the creators that don't know whats happening at all talking in-between. Men's slope would've been a much better watch with good weather, didn't catch women's slope, women's big air was insane, men's big air was insane (aa crash was gnarly and him going back and tossing trip was tight/mac winning was pretty sick), and knuckle huck was a good watch (lowkey gas to see jesper not get underscored for the first time in his career). At the end of the day it's just a comp, but being non-fis it always seems more fun. I definitely miss the Bobby Brown perfect score in 2010 but that was like my childhood so some bias there. Not sure if it's the same for kids now, I hope it is

Megan throwing a triple right out of the gate was crazy. My heart was racing for all of her attempts

Slope podium was perfect because Spahettini crashed on his first rail on his last run lol

Big air was also insane, Mac with the forward 2160

Pipe had some heavy slams in it but stoked to see Wise back with his first gold since 2015

Jesper can now retire after his gold in knuckle huck

Overall the actual skiing was dope, I just fast forwarded through all the bullshit in between stuff on the Youtube livestream

was literally cheering watching andri crash on that last run

big air was so hype. I love that xgames can still bring that excitement. Slope was eh cuz of conditions and knuckle huck was fun. Super pipe was pretty fun but judging for it was kinda weird

Didn't think too much of the influencer shit until the Todd Richards unsta post. And now in hindsight. So cringe. Sad even.

No snowmobile sucks.

he basically was complaining that the live stream wasnt produced enough, not enough stories about athletes, etc but the broadcast has all of these things, he just watched the wrong feed.

i said this in the other thread but the live stream was to engage with the under 18 crowd and the over 18 crowd hated it, not surprising but change is pretty difficult for anyone. nobody watching the live stream wants to watch some 5 minute made for tv package about how david wise has 3 kids.

side note, eileen gu made a pretty good case for her to become a ski announcer in the future, she stepped in on a couple of calls for slopestyle and she was a natural.

Yeah she did a great job. Some athletes don't transition well on the mic. Sucks to see her injured but at least she got to be involved in other ways. Another thing to add to her extremely long resume

I kinda agree with this one of the butters had too be better I forget which one but it was a double, but megan's tripple was too good it kinda looked like she barely brought it around but it loki looked better and maybe i'm just wrong

watched big air and knuckle huck. I honestly think they might need to increase the size of the big air jump at this point, it's just that crazy, but that should be up to the athletes. Big air was such a great watch. Knuckle huck was nice too. Didn't watch slope or pipe. Also saw mens snowboard big air which was super cool as well as snowboard knuckle huck. I do wish they'd bring back real ski. That was a really nice thing to have as a part of x games since it meant we could see the real artful side of ski editing.

Haven’t watched a ski comp in a good few years. But holy shit the level of women’s skiing has come so far. Triples, steezing afterbanged landings.

Men’s big air was crazy. Mental to see Teal Harle win a medal. I remember when he was just a bum on liberty skis. Good for him.

Right. I guess he was complaining it's less about the athletes and more about getting viewership, which, if I'm running a business I get it.

i would like to present to the court damning evidence of NS having a terminal case of butthurt stick in the mud syndrome:

ferdinand dahl won 3rd in slope and i haven't even seen it mentioned once on here today

let's go guys cheer up!

It was good but I hate the social media shit with the tiktok influencers. It ruins the hype of the xgames. I want to hear interviews and stories from the athletes, and why this event means so much to all of them. Now it just feels like an observational event than competition. Idk I'm old apparently.

Nah because they play that shit when its most inconvenient for the riders, during the fucking comp. Something tells me they forgot that without the athletes, the X-Games wouldn't exist.

I was impressed with the coverage of the events themselves (Nice work on the calls as always Tom), but the in-between fluff on TV, where the hosts were on the couches talking, was so cringey. I had to change the channel almost immediately.

Also, who is Young Gravy?

Watched it all after the fact when it was posted to YouTube. Best Xgames experience in years.

Got to enjoy it with my friends without all the filler nonsense.

Also, Salomon is making park skis again?

A “rapper”

Fuck yung gravy, fuck snowboard Jesus, fuck steesteep, fuck stony mcblaze

such a weird collaboration for impressions and views. Whole weekend just looked like a bunch of boomers trying to impress the mind numbed tiktokers…

felt like they blew it with maintaining the pipe for men’s snowboard finals. I remember them slipping the pipe a lot more in years past.

idk, I always wanted to go to aspen to check it out in person and this year made me never want to go out there. I’ll stick to watching recaps on YouTube I guess.

shame really. At least the skiing and riding was off the chain for the most part.

seemed like the pipe wasnt very good this year, its not common but there have been years where they fuck it up, maybe they cut it wrong or something idk but this aint the first time weve seen the majority of people struggle with similar sections of the pipe.

17 and thought the influencer shit was horrible. Did you see the fucking clip of Tom wallisch skiing with young gravy? Or the “stoner” dude in the pre show??? Shit was HORRIBLE. If I recall correctly one of the hosts asked stoney bologna who he was rooting for in the ski knuckle huck, this dude said ZEB.

Or they had been practicing in shit conditions the whole time and come finals they were doing their runs with a completely different speed and going much bigger. People were falling in a bunch of different spots. Plus they weren't doing easy tricks.

Fair point I didn’t consider. Just seemed like for the amount of snow they could have had some slippers out there before each run. Kinda lame that everything is a jam format these days. Feels better having set runs, at least for pipe. I just wanted to see ayumu shoot 30 ft out of the pipe

yeah the new snow didnt help at all thats for sure. i dont understand the jam format either, i guess its "faster" but idk i feel like they just judge faster now and thats the only difference.

Have you seen an increase in runs from competitors since the switch or does it still even out to 3 runs per competitor? If everybody still gets 3 runs I guess it doesn’t make a difference. Love the jam for knucklehuck/big air. Not so much for slope and pipe.

would also be interested in seeing x games do a rail jam in the future. I think that would be a cool addition to the event

i feel like for slope and pipe they get 3 for sure, most of the time 4 runs now in the same amount of time it took to do 3, so i guess thats better?

I was thinking about the jam. With an event where all riders go in order and everyone gets a run at the end it doesn't really make a difference. They set the time to do 3 runs and outside of anything wild that's what it will be.

Xgames 23 in a nutshell from my eyes

Men's Slopestyle - bit of a bummer with the conditions :/ They all gave it their all on a day where I wouldn't hit jumps.

Men's Big Air - Insane. Just watch it. Loads of different styles. (Best event this year)

Men's Knuckle Huck - Sometimes feels repetitive, but its a knuckle and there is only so much you can do. Sick seeing "smaller skiers" in it. Ex - Quinn, Joona, Hackle. Dubs of the knuckle are still psycho

Men's Halfpipe - Just scares the piss out of me.

Women's Slopestyle - Just about every lady was had more speed/took jumps bigger than the guys. Some sick runs the felt more relatable than the mens.

Women's Big Air - Megan killed it, all the girls killed it. Can't wait until they get a little more comfortable with some of their tricks for more grab variety.

Women's Halfpipe - Haven't watched it yet

couldnt say it better. He did a few dope tricks, but it was not in the spirit of knucklehuck being innovative with funky spins and butters.

It was a sick bunch of riders with some crazy tricks being done. But I am a very much against the "show" in between events. A minecraft competition. Just Steep Steep playing riders republic. Like what the hell is going on. Matej kinda got robbed again, but thats just my opinion. Still enjoyed watching.

Megan’s triple was sick as fuck

matejs first flippy quad attempt was also sick

some of the 2024 skis look cool, don’t like the new bent 90 topsheet though

Stoney mcblaze was actually hilarious, mentally tuned out the rest of them tho

Where are the Wendy’s french fries skis

Pipe crashes were fucking gnarly, the monster girls were so concerned

I wish asap ferg came back

I enjoyed the events I watched on YT, A Hall was fun to watch and I didn't hear the anouncers quote Drake a single time this year. Didn't go to any of the events in person tho this year despite living in the valley but I saw some of their practice laps when I was lapping in the mornings. Only downside this year was the lack of Wendy's as a sponsor. Last year they gave me a key fob for free frostys for a year and some french fry gloves, and in 19/20 they had some good free breakfast burgers. This year it was just free monster energy drinks and since my name isn't Kyle I wasn't hyped. Definitely don't feel any of hype for Xgames like you describe feeling when you were younger but I'm hyped for them to tear all their shit down and open the course to the pubic.
