So yesterday was the start of a 3day and 2night freestyle camp. starting out small- im trying to do a 540 on the 30 footer. i kinda span weird and landed (crashed) even weirder. it all happened to fast im not really sure wut happened but my knee hurt SO much.

I had to go home after that and ive been icing it like crazy.

it hurts to put any pressure on it and to bend it. it hurts on the back of the knee, on the side (outer side), and below my kneecap. Can anyone tell my wut i did? and how bad it is

you need to go see an orthopedic specialist, and probably get an MRI. Theres a very good chance you blew your acl, along with some other stuff. You're looking at surgery and then a six month recovery if you do your PT and heal decently well. I hope you have health insurance.

Apparently you live in canada, so health insurance shouldn't be an issue. Get in to see a doctor and get your surgery scheduled (if necessary) asap, since the canadian healthcare system can be really slow for things like knee surgery.

^ uhh year because its probably not as bad as you think, you just need to man up to the pain and stop bitching, if you think its that bad, then go to the freakin doctor

well forget the rest of ur camp, go to the doctor, get an MRI and wait to c what happens...it sounds like u tore something thoe

sounds like something that happened to me, really hurt my knee and afterwards the pain was at the back, and it hurt to bend it too much.

i iced it for a few days and didn't ski. but slowly got back into it, but was taking it real easy for a few weeks. it turned out ok, but there was still pain if i popped really hard, or landed backseat, or did stuff like backflipping into a pool where there was a big push through the knee.

looking back, it was probably pretty dumb not to see a doctor at all, but its all good now.

as stupid as i think it is to ask for advice on an orthopedic injury on a website populated primarily by 15 year olds, i am a physiotherapist and i can ofer you some advice.

firstly, you are doing the right thing by iceing, resting and i hope elevating and compressing your knee. swelling is the bodies protective mechanism after an injury, but it is also an inhibitor to healing.

secondly, noone can accurately diagnose your knee using a vague description of symptoms. go and see either a physiotherapist or a sports medicine doctor. Dont just go to a regular GP, the know fuck all about musculoskeletal injuries. Go to someone who sees knees all the time.

Plus, if the damage does appear to be bad, GPs in many parts of canada are unable to order MRI's, but a sport medicine specialist can.

If the injury can be manage conservatively, listen to the therapist with regard to strengthening and stabilising exercises - they are the key to a long future in skiing.

Best of luck bro.

i believe that the opinion of the masses of anonymous people of NS who, let's face it, are very likely balding old men looking for some boy toy skier booty, are the ones to deliver expert medical opinion.

holy crap man.

alright heres the thing:

About a month ago i skiid off a 15 foot cliff, landed, hit crust, and twisted my knee real bad. I skiid on it the rest of the day, just nothing aggressive. I got home and and it swelled up to which i iced alot. A doc checked it and said i strained my mcl (which is pretty much healed now) and that i MAY have torn my meniscus which needs arthroscopic surgery to repair.

two weeks ago i went in for an mri which is super expensive. i turns out that it wasnt clear on what happened to my meniscus and the only way theyll know how much damage is to go in with an arthroscopy. so the mri was pretty much a waste. probably tore either ur acl or ur pcl, i dont think its ur mcl cuz thats on the inner knee. but def go to a doc good luck with it.

Wow, brilliant diagnosis. What did you do, look in a crystal ball for that? Or maybe you somehow tested his knee to see if there was anterior movement of the tibial plateau over your highspeed broadband connection.

For all you know it could be nothing more than a bruise or a slight sprain. There's a lot of different injuries that can cause pain in and around the knee joint, so don't automatically assume that its a blown acl.

Just rest, ice, and get in to see a doctor as soon as you can. There is no way for anyone to tell you what you may or may not have done to your knee, based on some vague symptoms described over the internet.

If the pain is increasing or you are having any numbness, tingling or loss of sensation below the knee, then go to an emergency doctor immediately, otherwise, wait and try to see a doctor with some orthopaedic experience.

While you're waiting to see the doctor, let pain be your guide. That is to say, try to avoid doing anything that hurts (weightbearing, excessive flexion/extension, whatever hurts just don't do it.)

Maybe i looked at the fact that his knee hurt a lot, was very swollen, and had been twisted. I then thought of the fact that ACL injuries are the most common skiing knee injuries, particularly in regards to park skiing. I didn't assume shit man, I said theres a very good chance that his acl was blown. Try and deny that. Maybe instead of being a cocky ass, you could realize that I gave him pretty much as good information as you, advising him to see a doctor as soon as he can. In fact, I could give you shit right now, because as superior to me as you are, you neglected to mention that the vast majority of general practitioners know very little about knees and will just refer him to a specialist.

i understand you guys arent doctors, but i cant see a specialist till tomoro so i was just wandering how severe my injury is.

I just did my mcl so it can't be that, I had similar problems though and

I thought it was a lot worse than it was...

First, did you hear a pop, if so you tore something and judging by what you wrote, probably an acl or lcl. if your knee is unstable at all that is another telling sign that you f'ed it up. Even still, GO TO A DOCTOR. you don't want to mess with knee injuries or it could be fucked for your life.

Sure, you gave him advice to see a specialist, you also gave him a probable "diagnosis" of a blown ACL.

And just so you know, sprained MCL is the most common skiing knee injury both in and out of the park.

Pain, swelling, and a mechanism of injury involving twisting, could just as easily indicate a partial tear of the MCL, or a bruised or torn meniscus, or fractured tibial plateau, or pulled patella tendon, a bruised femoral condyle, etc, etc.

Or it could be as simple as a "sprained knee" that will recover with rest in a few days.

There is no reason whatsoever to assume that he has blown his ACL, or to state that there is a "very good chance" that he has done so.

sounds like theres a strong possibility that you are pregnant. seriously though, see a doctor, you dont want to take any chances with your knees.

I did my MCL and it only hurt on the inside of my knee, but becasue my physiothereapist was crazy, he thoguht it was nessecary to teach how each type of knee ingury will hurt me.

Inner knee - MCL

Outer knee - ACL

Inner/behind the knee - Meniscus.

But I'm no expert, that's just my expierience.

I HAVE THE ANSWER, THIS HAPPENED TO ME AND I POSTED ABOUT IT!!

https://www.newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/thread_id/291975/

this seriously works but it takes time and you have to do it every night (thats what she said), but i digress, this isnt just for pain under the kneecap, it is all around the knee. it happens either when you jam your hell to your ass, or when you are really unstrechy. if you want to fix your injury, and you are current at camp, stretch ALOT. before you go to sleep, when you wake up, before you go skiing, at lunch etc.

Seriously, its best to go talk to a doctor. dont take advice from some (for the most part) illegit site on teh internet, you want to be safe beacuse it could be serious.

it could help. but it could also fuck him over big time with his knee. his choice, my personal advice would talk to some1 who knows what hes talking about and can actually see whats happened to make an accurate diagnosis.

he would know if he tore something in his knee, he would be in great pain and he wouldn't post something on newschoolers to fix it. and obviously if the stretching hurts, then you stop at once

just a side note: i never thought i would see the day where jack johnson was arguing with an elephant...or did i

Christ, lets all stop trying to be doctors and shit, this isnt anything anyone should get bent out of shape about. Bitching about what kind of injury it might be is dumb. He needs to go to a doctor, and even with a really damn good GP, they might not know what it is until they see a MRI.

Basically, the rule i go by with injuries:

- If it stops bleeding after 5 minutes, its fine.

- If the swelling doesnt go away within two days, have it checked out.

- Anything strange with Mr Johnson and company is an instant visit to the doc

- Anything to do with knees = X10 concern/caution

- Anything that doesnt fit needs to pass a friend test; "Eeewwww" or "Cooool!" means its ok, genuine shock and speechlessness and I make an appointment.

didnt read the whole thread, but ive had 2 acls, one mcl, and 3 meniscus repairs, so i kind of know the feeling of what has torn. It is probably one of three things:

1. Meniscus Tear: you said it hurts when you put pressure on it. Is the pain sharp and sudden? Does it come from one single small point or several?

2. LCL tear. Lateral cruciate ligament, its the ligament on the outside of your knee, not that bad if you tore it, shorter recovery than an acl tear. you also could have just stretched it badly or torn it a little.

3.ACL tear. Does your knee feel extremely unstable like somethings not right in there, does your knee bend backwards at all? (My fist ACL tear i tried to stand up and my knee bent backwards a few degrees, because there was no major strong ligament to hold my knee in place)

From experience, it sounds mostley like a menisci tear. But I'm no doctor, and i cant feel or bend your knee via internet. I recomend seeing a emergency room doc just so they can pull on your knee to see whats up.

Let me know or give me some more info, Id like to know what happened! poor thing!

go see the doctor dude. go to an orthopediac specialist. if u live near slc, ut go to TOSH. I am currently in re-hab for a blown acl and torn miniscus. its worth it, go see a doc dude. your knee just gets more fucked if u ski on it more. ice and elevate and go see a doctor. cooley at TOSH is the man
