This has to be some sort of marketing move. Cause "everyone loves a kid" competing. I think that spot could've gone to someone else. Yeah those were some nice switch 10's last year at the damn open. But c'mon. I don't think he's proved himself consistant enough for that invite. Let alone for slopestyle. You watch, he'll probably medal or something too.

 
hes good. and hes only been on the scene it seems for such a short time. i think there are a lot of other pro skiers that may deserve the spot before him but this is just another opportunity for him to blow up into super skier stardom i just hope he doesnt turn into like a hanah

Now there are slots still open that they will probably fill... but honostly they'll invite 3 proven athletes after so dude who's been on the scene for 1 year. I mean it's great for him, don't get me wrong. But it just goes to show how bullshit the X games are.
 
x-games, only caring about teh 'feel good story' for marketing? NO WAY!!! I WOULD NEVER SEE THIS COMING....
 
i thought spence might have qualified on past results but i believe sprongs 2nd place us open result was all he needed. And DC.... cmon you werent serious, he was injured, and hes gotta qualify like anyone else
 
I'm not complaining about him being there. It's the fact that they picked him before everyone else. It's great that he's there. I'm just predicting whats going to happen.

Picking him in the second round gives them plenty of time to market this shit. So instead of Slopestyle... it's going to be SpongStyle.

Like Melvis said, It's all about the feel good story, and not the competition. I wouldn't be surprised if the guys who produce the OC produce the X games.
 
you know they are gunna have some shitty story on him, like how he is the one who is comin out of no where and goin to take first, but in reality i bet he will fall in his runs
 
I wouldn't say that, he's an awesome skier. But like i said, it's going to be SpongStyle. They're going to try to turn him into Shawn White.
 
you guys a idoits. Just because he hasnt been in many comps donest mean he hasnt been around for awhile. Sammy carlson was saying in freeskier how fuckin nasty he is. The kids good, can clearly perform under preasuer and we shouldnt doubt him till he screws up

The only thing I don't agree with regarding Derek Spong is that Armada doesn't hook him up, but I don't know the full story about that so I'm not gonna get into it.
 
Yeah Dandoy... i don't really get what you're saying.... but all i know if that he rides for Fischer now..... i'm sure he could do better than that, but maybe they're giving him a lot of $ and trying to make him big.
 
And oh.... i'm not even the lest bit impressed by that video. For how popular he has become, i would expect that to be a lot better.
 
where the fuck is rainville, if someone deserves it its tanner rainville. But spong also deserves a spot, hes proven himself.
 
you obviously didn't read the whole thread... this has nothing to do with derek. I have seen other videos with him. And he is an amazing skier, much better than me and mostly everyone on NS. What this has to do is with ESPN.

They're creating a "show" not a competition. I hope he does well. They're creating this cloud of drama already. It's never about the athletes.

But as far as them choosing him in the second round, thats just a little overkill. If he was choose in the Final round.. and they're "giving him a big chance" then I wouldn't be so leary. It's like they were giving him the chance right from the beginning.

And to tell you the truth... Armada most likely doesn't hook him up, just for the fact that he's so new. They surely don't want to sponsor a kid who has one breakthrough season and then dies off... We all know Schiller kills it like a motherfucker and guess what, he's on the Amature team.. isn't that great. You think they're going to put a kid who has one good season on the team??? They're business men, they have to take a conservative approach. Let's say spong has a terrible season this year or in up coming years, how's that going to make armada look?
 
I'm not saying he should be on the AM team, I'm saying they could at least put him on the development team (like Sean Fields, Kim Lamarre, Zach D etc)

But they probably have their reasons.
 
spong deserves it more than spence and chriton but not rainville spence doesn't impress me too much ith hi air skill and chriton hasn't competed since two years ago
 
i didnt bother reading anything above this but spong has some of the best natural talent in the game and some of the sickest style and works hard for what he has.... he deserves it hands down
 
for all you who said this is a marketing move or doesn't deserve a spot, seriosly just wait.Spong will throw down i guarentee. and to whoever said they weren't impressed by that video link that was put in the thread is an idiot (notcause i made the edit or casue im good friends with derek) he was barely trying. Dspong kills it
 
Spong shouldn't have even placed, i thought everyone else had way better style then spong.
